✏Hiding in Plain Sight Book Summary : Instant New York Times Bestseller Washington Post Bestseller USA Today Bestseller Indie Bound Bestseller Authors Round the South Bestseller Midwest Indie Bestseller New York Times bestselling author Sarah Kendzior documents the truth about the calculated rise to power of Donald Trump since the 1980s and how the erosion of our liberties made an American demagogue possible. The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history – buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals the inherent fragility of American democracy – how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades. In Kendzior’s signature and celebrated style, she expertly outlines Trump’s meteoric rise from the 1980s until today, interlinking key moments of his life with the degradation of the American political system and the continual erosion of our civil liberties by foreign powers. Kendzior also offers a never-before-seen look at her lifelong tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time – living in New York through 9/11 and in St. Louis during the Ferguson uprising, and researching media and authoritarianism when Trump emerged using the same tactics as the post-Soviet dictatorships she had long studied. It is a terrible feeling to sense a threat coming, but it is worse when we let apathy, doubt, and fear prevent us from preparing ourselves. Hiding in Plain Sight confronts the injustice we have too long ignored because the truth is the only way forward.

✏In Plain Sight Book Summary : This riveting inside story of the intense search for the Salt Lake City teenager reveals never-before-told details of the largest investigation in Utah state history. The firsthand account of Tom Smart, Elizabeth's uncle and one-time suspect, reveals the details of the flawed police investigation, the media's manipulation of the family, and the eyewitness account of nine-year-old Mary Katherine Smart that went largely ignored by investigators. New research is presented on the family background of disturbed street preacher Brian David Mitchell, who kidnapped Elizabeth as part of a bizarre polygamous plot. Also examined is the critical role of the media, revealing the essential part played by John Walsh and others in facilitating Elizabeth's safe return, and the manipulative influence of Fox News and Bill O'Reilly. Going beyond a mere eyewitness account, the book includes information culled from interviews with more than 150 people involved in the search and investigation, notes from family meetings, and memos from law enforcement officials.

✏Hidden in Plain Sight Book Summary : The history of Aboriginal people in Canada taught in schools and depicted in the media tends to focus on Aboriginal displacement from native lands and the consequent social and cultural disruptions they have endured. Collectively, they are portrayed as passive victims of European colonization and government policy, and, even when well intentioned, these depictions are demeaning and do little to truly represent the role Aboriginal peoples have played in Canadian life. Hidden in Plain Sight adds another dimension to the story, showing the extraordinary contributions Aboriginal peoples have made – and continue to make – to the Canadian experience. From treaties to contemporary arts and literatures, Aboriginal peoples have helped to define Canada and have worked to secure a place of their own making in Canadian culture. For this volume, editors David R. Newhouse, Cora J. Voyageur, and Daniel J.K. Beavon have brought together leading scholars and other impassioned voices, and together, they give full treatment to the Aboriginal contribution to Canada's intellectual, political, economic, social, historic, and cultural landscapes. Included are profiles of several leading figures such as actor Chief Dan George, artist Norval Morrisseau, author Tomson Highway, activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, and politician Phil Fontaine, among others. Canada simply would not be what it is today without these contributions. The first of two volumes, Hidden in Plain Sight is key to understanding and appreciating Canadian society and will be essential reading for generations to come.

✏Hiding in Plain Sight Book Summary : Details how African-descended women's societal, marital, and sexual decisions forever reshaped the racial makeup of Argentina Argentina promotes itself as a country of European immigrants. This makes it an exception to other Latin American countries, which embrace a more mixed--African, Indian, European--heritage. Hiding in Plain Sight: Black Women, the Law, and the Making of a White Argentine Republic traces the origins of what some white Argentines mischaracterize as a "black disappearance" by delving into the intimate lives of black women and explaining how they contributed to the making of a "white" Argentina. Erika Denise Edwards has produced the first comprehensive study in English of the history of African descendants outside of Buenos Aires in the late colonial and early republican periods, with a focus on how these women sought whiteness to better their lives and that of their children. Edwards argues that attempts by black women to escape the stigma of blackness by recategorizing themselves and their descendants as white began as early as the late eighteenth century, challenging scholars who assert that the black population drastically declined at the end of the nineteenth century because of the whitening or modernization process. She further contends that in Córdoba, Argentina, women of African descent (such as wives, mothers, daughters, and concubines) were instrumental in shaping their own racial reclassifications and destinies. This volume makes use of a wealth of sources to relate these women's choices. The sources consulted include city censuses and notarial and probate records that deal with free and enslaved African descendants; criminal, ecclesiastical, and civil court cases; marriages and baptisms records and newsletters. These varied sources provide information about the day-to-day activities of cordobés society and how women of African descent lived, formed relationships, thrived, and partook in the transformation of racial identities in Argentina.

✏Hidden in Plain Sight Book Summary : The acclaimed and accessible Hidden in Plain Sight series showcases the extraordinary contributions made by Aboriginal peoples to Canadian identity and culture. This collection features new accounts of Aboriginal peoples working hard to improve their lives and those of other Canadians, and serves as a powerful contrast to narratives that emphasize themes of victimhood, displacement, and cultural disruption. In this second volume of the series, leading scholars and other experts pay tribute to the enduring influence of Aboriginal peoples on Canadian economic and community development, environmental initiatives, education, politics, and arts and culture. Interspersed are profiles of many significant Aboriginal figures, including singer-songwriter and educator Buffy Sainte-Marie, politician Elijah Harper, entrepreneur Dave Tuccaro, and musician Robbie Robertson. Hidden in Plain Sight continues to enrich and broaden our understandings of Aboriginal and Canadian history, while providing inspiration for a new generation of leaders and luminaries.

✏Hidden in Plain Sight Book Summary : While examining its neuro-cognitive hardware, psychology usually ignores the socio-cognitive software underlying human attention. Yet although it is nature that equips us with our sense organs, it is nevertheless society that shapes the way we actually use them. The book explores the social underpinnings of attention, the way in which we focus our attention (and thereby notice and ignore things) not just as individuals and as humans but also as social beings, members of particular communities with specific traditions and conventions of attending to certain parts of reality while ignoring others.

✏Hiding in Plain Sight Book Summary : Hiding in Plain Sight tells the story of the global effort to apprehend the world’s most wanted fugitives. Beginning with the flight of tens of thousands of Nazi war criminals and their collaborators after World War II, then moving on to the question of justice following the recent Balkan wars and the Rwandan genocide, and ending with the establishment of the International Criminal Court and America’s pursuit of suspected terrorists in the aftermath of 9/11, the book explores the range of diplomatic and military strategies—both successful and unsuccessful—that states and international courts have adopted to pursue and capture war crimes suspects. It is a story fraught with broken promises, backroom politics, ethical dilemmas, and daring escapades—all in the name of international justice and human rights. Hiding in Plain Sight is a companion book to the public television documentary Dead Reckoning: Postwar Justice from World War II to The War on Terror. ✏In Plain Sight Book Summary : 'Trenton is where I learned about hunger, where it became personal for me, where it shed a thick hide of abstraction and touched my life, if only from the outside looking in. It is also where I learned something else: that the kindness of strangers can make a difference, even against a scourge that lingers in plain sight and never goes away. More than anything, this is really just a simple story about everyday people. People who need help and people who are fighting a holding action to meet that need. Fortunately, and unfortunately, that fight goes on.'

✏In Plain Sight Book Summary : This is a story about what happens when a state education department partners with city school districts in an attempt to close the achievement gap between poor, minority city students and their counterparts in the predominantly white and more affluent suburban districts. It is set in New Jersey, but the lessons apply in any American city that has concentrations of poor children in failing school districts. What sets New Jersey apart is the generous level of court-mandated funding available, and the fact that preschool in the state begins at age three. A preliminary look at the results of New Jersey's expensive efforts resulting from the landmark New Jersey Supreme Court case Abbott v. Burke suggests an unsurprising conclusion: when additional funds are concentrated on supporting and enhancing teachers' efforts to assess the needs of their students and tailor their instruction to those needs, dramatically better results are possible. If no coherent plan for improved classroom instruction is implemented, more money makes no difference, and can, instead, produce confusion and declining performance. New Jersey has demonstrated remarkable success in improving children's educational attainment —for example, only in Massachusetts did fourth graders score higher than those in New Jersey, a much more diverse state, on the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading test. And, remarkably, New Jersey was the only state in which scores in all ethnic categories improved over 2005. It is Gordon MacInnes's contention that New Jersey's fairly dramatic improvement is a product of a focused effort by many of the state's poorest school districts to introduce effective early literacy practices. No one is better equipped to tell the story of New Jersey's success in closing the achievement gap than MacInnes, and his remarkably frank and comprehensive examination of those districts where poor, minority students demonstrated continued academic improvement provides invaluable lessons for improving the academic prospects for all.

✏Water in Plain Sight Book Summary : Water scarcity is on everyone's mind. Long taken for granted, water availability has become dependent on economics, politics, and people's food and lifestyle choices. But as anxiety mounts--and even as a swath of California farmland has been left fallow, and extremist groups worldwide exploit the desperation of people losing livelihoods to desertification--many are finding new routes to water security with key implications for food access, economic resilience, and climate change. Water does not perish, nor does it require millions of years to form as do fossil fuels. However water is always on the move and we must learn to work with its natural movement. In this timely, important book, Judith D. Schwartz presents a refreshing perspective on water that transcends zero-sum thinking. By allying with the water cycle, we can revive lush, productive landscapes, like the river in rural Zimbabwe that now flows miles further than it has in living memory thanks to restorative grazing; the fruit-filled food forest in Tucson, Arizona, grown by harvesting urban wastewater; or the mini-oasis in West Texas nourished by dew. Animated by stories from around the globe, Water In Plain Sight is an inspiring reminder that fixing the future of our drying planet involves understanding what makes natural systems thrive.

✏Hidden in Plain Sight Book Summary : In the course of the mundane routines of life, we encounter a variety of landscapes and objects, either ignoring them or looking without interest at what appears to be just a tree, stone, anonymous building, or dirt road. But the “deep traveler,” according to Hartford Courant essayist David K. Leff, doesn’t make this mistake. Instead, the commonplace elements become the most important. By learning to see the magic in the mundane, we not only enrich daily life with a sense of place, we are more likely to protect and make those places better. Over his many years working at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and writing about the state’s landscape, Leff gained unparalleled intimacy while traveling its byways and back roads. In Hidden in Plain Sight, Leff’s essays and photographs take us on a point-by-point journey, revealing the rich stories behind many of Connecticut’s overlooked landmarks, from the Merritt Parkway and Cornwall’s Cathedral Pines to roadside rock art and centuries-old milestones.

✏In Plain Sight Book Summary : With In Plain Sight, author Dan Kennard sets out to make his presence known to his fictional characters, to become as obvious as possible to his own creations, and to awaken them to the true nature of their existence as sentences on a page. The problem is, it proves far more difficult to break through to them than he ever imagined, causing him to go to greater and greater lengths to induce a revelation in them.In "Foreplay," Kennard initiates contact with his own creations and finds them just as stubborn to resist him as he is to connect; in "Pinholes" life in a shoebox becomes a demonstration of power; in "Playing with Myself," error codes become cosmic messages from the Creator of the Universe; and in "Birdsong," a man finds his freedom in stunning, unlikely fashion as Kennard turns the screws on his life.Interspersed within these and other surrealist, darkly comic tales in this collection are the multi-faceted eye-witness accounts of Kennardo, a mysterious wayfaring hobo clown drifting through town and dispensing his own special brand of enlightenment to the people of Sunset City one encounter at a time.Part a collection of Zen-like fables, part meta-fiction, part dark comedy, for the many characters and voices that inhabit these stories, while the opportunities to learn the truth of their lives are all around them, it doesn't mean they have to take them.

✏Hidden in Plain Sight Book Summary : Hidden in Plain Sight tells the tragic untold story of children's rights in America. It asks why the United States today, alone among nations, rejects the most universally embraced human-rights document in history, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This book is a call to arms for America to again be a leader in human rights, and to join the rest of the civilized world in recognizing that the thirst for justice is not for adults alone. Barbara Bennett Woodhouse explores the meaning of children's rights throughout American history, interweaving the childhood stories of iconic figures such as Benjamin Franklin with those of children less known but no less courageous, like the heroic youngsters who marched for civil rights. How did America become a place where twelve-year-old Lionel Tate could be sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1999 death of a young playmate? In answering questions like this, Woodhouse challenges those who misguidedly believe that America's children already have more rights than they need, or that children's rights pose a threat to parental autonomy or family values. She reveals why fundamental human rights and principles of dignity, equality, privacy, protection, and voice are essential to a child's journey into adulthood, and why understanding rights for children leads to a better understanding of human rights for all. Compassionate, wise, and deeply moving, Hidden in Plain Sight will force an examination of our national resistance--and moral responsibility--to recognize children's rights.

What an unexpected delight I found: a hidden treasure revealed before my eyes! Anoushka Sharma's anthology of poems, Hidden in Plain Sight, represents about five years of profound reflections written between the ages 8-13, in which one can follow the trajectory of her personaI development. This work offers both depth of consciousness and the vibrancy of the sensations and feelings of aliveness as a girl progresses through awakening to both herself and her full spectrum of experiences in life, experiences both within and without. Through the power of word, Anoushka finds her voice and discovers how to take flight in a world she learns can be both exhilarating and challenging, painful and inspiring. It speaks to the ways in which writing and poetry can unlock potential, empower and unleash awareness in today's youth--setting a tremendous example. This little gem is a great read for adults and children alike." --C. Elizabeth Leach, poet and writer, consultant and Principal of Awareness Communications LLC Anoushka Sharma is very mature for her age, and sees things many people don't. I want to keep reading her writing! It's so powerful that she is sharing what is in her heart and mind, and she is inspiring me to think and be more grounded. She is creating so much power through her words and pictures. We need people of her generation to continue to examine, question, and talk about what they see happening around them. She is a strong voice inspiring each of us to connect back to our sense of wonder and confidence to create change. --Stephanie Hon Editor, REEL ROCK Film Tour New York, NYC

✏God Hides in Plain Sight Book Summary : "This book has wonderful and valuable things to say. I won't soon forget them." Frederick Buechner Have you ever had a conversation that went far deeper than the words spoken or an experience where you felt you had participated in something sacred that you had been part of the unbidden activity of God? Although these situations may seem rare and unexplainable, they are reminders that God's grace surrounds us constantly and shows up in manifold ways to those who have eyes to see the sacred in everyday life. "These sacramental moments are the bursts of revelation that give spiritual order to our otherwise disordered lives," says veteran journalist Dean Nelson. In this colourful, story-driven introduction to sacramental living, Nelson offers all Christians a way to see the presence of God amid the chaos and monotony of daily life. Each chapter emphasizes a different kind of sacramental moment, showing how it can be a lens through which we can see more of God.

✏Hiding in Plain Sight Book Summary : Imagine for a moment that you're a college professor in Portland, Maine. You've just buried your father, whose sudden death has rocked his family and friends alike, as he was in seemingly perfect health. And now you've inherited the family home, located in the idyllic small town of Timber Falls, Maine, where everyone knows everyone and neighbors still look out for one another. It is a place where strangers are noticed and violent crime does not exist. At about the same time, you are approached by a representative of a development group interested in buying the house and the land, an extensive tract of wooden property with river access. But the owner of the company cannot guarantee that the house will not be destroyed. Knowing that your father put his heart into restoring the home—a Victorian beauty that has been in your family since the 30's—you refuse to sell. But now people are dying on your property. People you've known your whole life. People you love. What do you do? If you're Emma DuValle, you fight. Together with the help of the authorities, she does just that. And along the way, she discovers something that she thought she had lost. Strength...determination...and the will to put the pieces of her life back together and carry on. Emma is helped and hindered along the way by a diverse cast of characters. There is the Russian crime boss in Chicago who wants her land, the agent he employs to get it, and the cold-blooded killer hired to drive her from her home. And there is the local sheriff and the FBI agent who will stop at nothing to uncover the killer and prevent further loss of life. In the end, no one expects what they will find—that the person they’re looking for is right under their noses…hiding in plain sight.

✏In Plain Sight Book Summary : Meet Ebenezer Cosmen. He's a computer programmer and a writer-a middle-of-the-road man with conventional needs and a relaxed attitude towards worldly things. He lives alone with a small cohort of trusted comrades. He wrote a fictional novel about a serial killer that was later imitated by an actual killer. Obviously, he became a little less middle-of-the-road after that. With a bit of luck, the media caught wind of the story, and it ignited a morbid fascination in people. This recognition propelled his book sales to heights he never imagined. He enjoyed the success for over a decade until the killer was captured. Fans of the fiction labeled Ebenezer as a one-hit-wonder; unknowingly, they dared him to repeat his success. Ebenezer struggled for a while until the oddest-looking pair of FBI agents visited him on an unsuspecting Saturday morning. With an offer to be a consultant for the FBI, Ebenezer would be tracking a new killer with a similar ilk as his creation, but this time, the killer preferred more famous prey. Now Ebenezer is burdened with information, two women too beautiful to resist, and colleagues with atypical demeanors. The case will take him in circles until he goes back to where it all started. He will soon discover that there is nowhere left for him to hide... and no one left to trust. Only at his most vulnerable will he unfurl the truth that lay in plain sight the entire time.

✏In Plain Sight Book Summary : Following a 1932 coup d'état in Thailand that ended absolute monarchy and established a constitution, the Thai state that emerged has suppressed political dissent through detention, torture, forced reeducation, disappearances, assassinations, and massacres. In Plain Sight shows how these abuses, both hidden and occurring in public view, have become institutionalized through a chronic failure to hold perpetrators accountable. Tyrell Haberkorn's deeply researched revisionist history of modern Thailand highlights the legal, political, and social mechanisms that have produced such impunity and documents continual and courageous challenges to state domination.
