✏Improving Farmed Fish Quality and Safety Book Summary : Global aquaculture production has grown rapidly over the last 50 years. It is generally accepted that there is limited potential to increase traditional fisheries since most fish stocks are well or fully exploited. Consequently increased aquaculture production is required in order to maintain global per capita fish consumption at the present level. Fish farming enables greater control of product quality and safety, and presents the possibility of tailoring products according to consumer demands. This important collection reviews safety and quality issues in farmed fish and presents methods to improve product characteristics. The first part of the book focuses on chemical contaminants, chemical use in aquaculture and farmed fish safety. After an opening chapter discussing the risks and benefits of consumption of farmed fish, subsequent contributions consider environmental contaminants, pesticides, drug use and antibiotic resistance in aquaculture. Part two addresses important quality issues, such as selective breeding to improve flesh quality, the effects of dietary factors including alternative lipids and proteins sources on eating quality, microbial safety of farmed products, parasites, flesh colouration and off-flavours. Welfare issues and the ethical quality of farmed products are also covered. The final part discusses ways of managing of product quality, with chapters on HACCP, monitoring and surveillance, authenticity and product labelling. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Improving farmed fish quality and safety is a standard reference for aquaculture industry professionals and academics in the field. Reviews safety and quality issues in farmed fish and presents methods to improve product characteristics Discusses contaminants, persistent organic pollutants and veterinary drug residues and methods for their reduction and control Addresses important quality issues, genetic control of flesh characteristics and the effects of feed on product nutritional and sensory quality

✏Handbook of Seafood Quality Safety and Health Applications Book Summary : The global market for seafood products continues to increase year by year. Food safety considerations are as crucial as ever in this sector, and higher standards of quality are demanded even as products are shipped greater distances around the world. The current global focus on the connection between diet and health drives growth in the industry and offers commercial opportunities on a number of fronts. There is great interest in the beneficial effects of marine functional compounds such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Seafoods are well-known as low calorie foods, and research continues into the nutritional effects on, for example, obesity and heart disease. In addition, by-products of marine food processing can be used in nutraceutical applications. This book is a resource for those interested in the latest advances in the science and technology of seafood quality and safety as well as new developments in the nutritional effects and applications of marine foods. It includes chapters on the practical evaluation of seafood quality; novel approaches in preservation techniques; flavour chemistry and analysis; textural quality and measurement; packaging; the control of food-borne pathogens and seafood toxins. New research on the health-related aspects of marine food intake are covered, as well as the use of seafoods as sources of bioactives and nutraceuticals. The book is directed at scientists and technologists in academia, government laboratories and the seafood industries, including quality managers, processors and sensory scientists.

✏Fish Vaccination Book Summary : Fish farming, in seawater and in freshwater, in cages, tanks or ponds, makes an ever-increasing and significant contribution to the production of aquatic food in many regions of the world. During the last few decades there has been significant progress and expansion in the aquaculture sector, characterized by intensified production and the exploitation of many new species. Aquaculture must be a sustainable bio-production, environmentally as well as economically. Disease prevention in order to reduce losses, and the use of antimicrobials is crucial in this perspective. Vaccination has, in a few years, become the most important method for disease prevention in aquaculture, and effective prophylaxis based on stimulation of the immune system of the fish is essential for further development of the industry. This book provides general information about disease prevention in fish by vaccination, as well as specific descriptions of the correct use of vaccines against the most important bacterial and viral infectious diseases of aquatic animals. The book is written by some of the world’s leading experts in the subject, drawn from many countries where aquaculture is a significant and expanding part of the economy. Fish Vaccination is an encyclopedia of fish vaccinology for every present and future aquaculturist. Professionals in the aquaculture sector, including fish veterinarians and fish biologists, within the industry, in scientific institutions and regulatory authorities will all find a huge wealth of commercially important knowledge within this book. Libraries in all universities where aquaculture, biological and veterinary sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this important book on their shelves.

✏Sixth World Congress on Seafood Safety Quality and Trade Book Summary : Fish and fish products are among the most traded food commodities: close to 40 percent by volume ends up in international markets. Yet around three-quarters of fish exports finish up in just three markets: the European Union, Japan and the United States of America. China is an increasingly important player both as an exporter and an importer. Consumers expect that the fish they have access to will be safe and of acceptable quality, regardless of where they are produced or ultimately consumed. This has given rise to issues regarding fish quality and safety, international trade, risk analysis and harmonization of standards. These and other issues are addressed in this document. ✏Rapport de la Consultation Sur L application de L article 9 Du Code de Conduite Pour Une Peche Responsable de la FAO Dans la R gion M diterran enne Book Summary : The meeting was attended by participants from 20 members of GFCM and observers. The Consultation discussed two working documents presented by the Secretariat. The first was the synthesis of the national reports prepared by the countries, and the second was a proposal for the elements to be considered for the preparation of action plans at national and regional levels. Three Working Groups were created. The Working Group evaluated the document provided by the Secretariat and improved the list of proposed activities. These were also ranked in order of priority at national and regional level and general mechanisms for their implementation were also proposed. The Consultation recommended that the GFCM be the umbrella institution for implementation of the programme of activities identified by the Working Groups.
