✏Natural Fiber Reinforced Hybrid Composites Book Summary : In the last few decades, natural fibers have received growing attention as an alternative to the synthetic fibers used in the reinforcement of polymeric composites, thanks to their specific properties, low price, health advantages, renewability, and recyclability. Furthermore, natural fibers have a CO2-neutral life cycle, in contrast to their synthetic counterparts. As is widely known, natural fibers also possess some drawbacks, e.g., a hydrophilic nature, low and variable mechanical properties, poor adhesion to polymeric matrices, high susceptibility to moisture absorption, low aging resistance, etc. This implies that their applications are limited to non-structural interior products. To overcome this problem, the hybridization of natural fibers with synthetic ones (i.e., glass, carbon, and basalt) or different natural fibers can be a solution. For this reason, extensive research concerning natural–synthetic and natural–natural hybrid composites has been done in the last years. In this context, this book aims to collect some interesting papers concerning the use of natural fibers together with synthetic ones with the aim of obtaining hybrid structures with good compromise between high properties (e.g., mechanical performances, thermal behavior, aging tolerance in humid or aggressive environments, and so on) and environment care.

✏Production and Characterization of Hybrid Polymer Composites Based on Natural Fibers Book Summary : In this chapter, a review is made on the processing and properties of hybrid composites based on a polymer matrix and a blend of different natural (lignocellulosic) fibers. In particular, the processing methods are described and comparisons are made between the general properties with a focus on physical, mechanical and thermal properties. A discussion is presented on the effect of the polymer and fiber types, as well as reinforcement content. Properties improvement is also discussed using fiber surface treatment or the addition of coupling agents. Finally, auto-hybrid composites are presented with conditions leading to a positive deviation from the rule of hybrid mixture (RoHM) model.

Modal analysis may predict the failure of structures prone to dynamic loading conditions. The composites were compression molded using recently identified short Sansevieria cylindrica fibers and coconut sheath mats in a polyester matrix. The study focused on the effect of the stacking sequence and fiber chemical treatment (alkali and silane) on the composite properties. Hybridization of coconut sheath and Sansevieria cylindrica fiber significantly enhanced all properties compared to single-fiber composites. ✏A Comparative Analysis on Tensile Strength of Dry and Moisture Absorbed Hybrid Kenaf glass Polymer Composites Book Summary : Economic and environmental concerns lead the researchers toward development of sustainable and renewable materials of which reinforced composites are part of. The abundantly available natural fibers have attracted the researchers to study their performance as reinforcements and feasibility for making automobile components. The performance of composite materials is mainly assessed through their mechanical properties. However, natural fibers to date were mainly used as reinforcements to create bulk composite components with reduced cost rather than improved mechanical performances. Among the methods available for improving mechanical properties of the natural fiber composites, combined mercerization treatment, hybridization, and incorporation of fly ash fillers in the matrix are the best solutions. Therefore, the objective of this research is to evaluate the tensile properties of hybrid kenaf/glass composites with and without fly ash particulate filler as per ASTM standards. Moisture absorption behavior and its effect on the tensile properties of hybrid composites are also investigated. The results revealed that the addition of 10wt % fly ash particles with natural fiber composites increased the tensile strength of composites while hybridization with glass fibers reduced the water absorption properties.
