✏Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hCG Book Summary : Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced during pregnancy by the embryo. It promotes progesterone production by corpus luteal cells. It also functions in pregnancy to promote angiogenesis in uterine vasculature, it immuno-blands the invading placental tissue so it is not rejected by the maternal uterine tissues, promotes the growth of the uterus in line with the growth of the fetus, promotes the differentiation of growing cytotrophoblast cells, promotes the quiescence of contractions in the uterine myometrium during the course of pregnancy, and also has function in growth and development of fetal organs. The book describes the detailed biology, clinical chemistry, and clinical perspectives of hCG and associated molecules, and examines hCG, hyperglycosylated hCG and hCG free ß-subunit, 3 separate and independent molecules with totally sovereign physiological functions. It provides comprehensive information on hCG from basic science to clinical medicine Written by specialists in the field

✏Fertilization of the Human Egg In Vitro Book Summary : The Organon Symposia have actually become a tradition, keeping up with exciting developments in reproductive medicine. The purpose of this symposium on "Fertiliza tion of the Human Egg in Vitro" was to bring together the stilllimited number of elinical specialists in the field and to stimulate another group of basic research people to exchange their experiences and knowledge, hopefully promoting elose cooperation between the two groups. It was a kind of scientific "first" that all research teams so far successful in achieving the birth of a healthy baby, fertilized in vitro came together at a workshop conference without a large audience of spectators and reporters, but with a small number of highly critical colleagues from the fields of basic reproductive physiology and comparative developmental biology. This atmosphere allowed for the elose exchange of results, hypotheses, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, criticism, and respect, and created very productive discussions, all of which furthered the aim of the method: To help more childless couples to have their own babies by the ultima ratio procedure of in vitro fertilization and embryo replacement. The book that has emerged from this symposium will help to disseminate the great amount of information and experience gathered among the scientifically and clinically interested colleagues of many other hospitals and universities who could not be invited to the meeting. At the same time, it will prove that there is much more work to be done in the basic and clinical sciences of human embryology and reproductive biology.

✏The Primate Ovary Book Summary : This 1987 ORPRC Symposium on Primate Reproductive Biology, the third in a series, marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center (ORPRC). In organizing these symposia, we have emphasized the dedication of many ORPRC staff members to research with nonhuman primates as models for human reproduction. The first symposium in this series, organized by William Montagna, was held in May 1981. Appropriately for a beginning series, its topic was fetal endocrinology. The subject of this year's symposium was the primate ovary, and, as in the past, scientists from around the world, including Sweden, Scotland, England, West Germany, and India met in Beaverton, Oregon, to exchange ideas and information on this important "aspect of reproduction. The international scope of the symposium reflects our belief that both the problems and their solutions extend beyond national boundaries. Many of the nonhuman primates that we rely on as models are endangered as civilization, through population pressure, encroaches on their natural habitats. Without a deeper understanding of how primate reproduction is regulated, and without the control over human population that such an understanding can bring, the quality of life for all primate species may well become substantially diminished. Consequently, we dedicate these symposia to the thesis that a deeper understanding of primate reproductive biology will ultimately improve all primate life. Robert M. Brenner Charles H. Phoenix vii PREFACE Today there is renewed interest in the processes controlling the gametogenic and endocrine functions of the ovary.

✏Infertility Book Summary : A little over 12 years ago I wrote a small volume entitled Infertility. It seemed to me at that time that significant advances in the field called for the publication of such a volume. The following is from the preface to that volume: During the past 15 years considerable progress has been made in the field of infertility diagnosis and management. It is perhaps a paradox that much of this increased knowledge has come about because of Western medicine's preoccupation with the search for a means to control reproduction. As a result, we have achieved new insights into the physiologic mechanisms involved in reproduction, and we have found better methods for measuring physiologic changes in reproductive health and disease. To these advances can be added improvements in the utilization of endoscopic and surgical techniques, in the diagnosis and treatment of infections and endometriosis, and in the treatment of hormonal disorders. During this period, too, through workshops and conferences and in journals and texts, these latest advances have been made available to physi cians, an outstanding example being the two volumes of Progress in Infer tility, edited by Drs. Jan Behrman and Robert Kistner. As necessary as these publications are, they do not offer an overall view of infertility diag nosis and management.

✏Manual on Assisted Reproduction Book Summary : Our knowledge of reproductive medicine has expanded rapidly since the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby to be conceived by in vitro fertilization, which was performed by Professors Patrick Steptoe and Bob Edwards in Oldham, Eng land, in 1978. Hardly a year goes by without the development of a new or a modification of an existing method of assisted reproduction. Within a relatively short period, in vitro fertilization has been introduced into the treatment of female infertility. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has also created new opportunities for the treatment of male infertility. The first edition of this book was published in 1996. In the second edition most of the chapters have been updated and additional interest is focused on intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in view of the risk of malformations in newborns. This manual addresses the techniques of assisted reproduction that are avail able today. Competent authors from various centers present, in a concise way, their tried-and-tested procedures, so that the latter can be readily implemented. Due to different legal regulations, the scope of assisted reproduction is much more limited in Germany than in many other countries. For example, whereas only three embryos may be created and transferred in Germany, such restric tions do not exist in several other European countries and the United States. Furthermore, heterologous fertilization, oocyte donation, and surrogate mother hood are banned in Germany.

✏Ultrastructure of Human Gametogenesis and Early Embryogenesis Book Summary : In the last few years, the adoption and worldwide proliferation of clinical procedures for medically assisted conception have been associated with the examination and analysis of spermatozoa, oocytes and early embryos under a variety of in vivo and in vitro conditions. These analyses have enabled correlations to be made between the behavior of gametes, the pattern of early embryonic development and the initiation of a normal pregnancy. Collectively, the findings have not only enormously increased our understanding of the process of early human development, but also have provided new insights into the origin and causes of reproductive failure in man. The research presented in this volume describes recent results derived from the study of normal and abnormal patterns of human spermatogenesis, oogenesis and early embryogenesis. The chapters discuss aberrations in morphodynamic and morphophysiological processes that have clinical relevance in human infertility and conception. Two of the chapters describe, respectively, the basic research that allows the cryopreservation of human oocytes and embryos, and the development of in vitro systems that permit the study of cell differentiation and interaction during the peri-implantation period. When relevant, each chapter extrapolates findings from in vitro experimentation to the comparable situation that is observed in vivo.

✏In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer Book Summary : The use of human in vitro fertilization in the management of infertility is the outgrowth of years of laboratory observations on in vitro sperm-egg interaction. "The editors of this work have themselves contributed significantly to basic knowledge of the mammalian fertilization process. The observations of Don Wolf on sperm penetration, the block to polyspermy and, most recently, sperm hyperactivation in the monkey and human, Gregory Kopf's elucidation of the mechanisms of sperm activation during penetration and the reciprocal dialogue between sperm and egg, and Barry Bavister's definition of culture conditions and requirements necessary for in vitro oocyte maturation, fertilization and development in model mammalian systems including nonhuman primates have contributed greatly to our understanding of the mammalian fertilization process. Wolf, Kopf and Gerrity have enjoyed substantial interaction with clinicians in Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and have been directly involved with successful IVF programs. Both Wolf and Kopf have served as research scientists in the Division of Reproductive Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, which, for more than 22 years, has fostered co-mingling of clinically oriented and basic science faculty. It is through such interaction, which clearly exists at many institutions including the University of Wisconsin, that the process of technology transfer is best served. Without an exquisitely coordinated laboratory, there can be no consistent success in human in vitro fertilization. Quality control is pivotal, but close collaboration between the laboratory and the clinic is also essential as information is shared and correlated.
