✏Homicide Book Summary : The human race spends a disproportionate amount of attention, money, and expertise in solving, trying, and reporting homicides, as compared to other social problems. The public avidly consumes accounts of real-life homicide cases, and murder fiction is more popular still. Nevertheless, we have only the most rudimentary scientific understanding of who is likely to kill whom and why. Martin Daly and Margo Wilson apply contemporary evolutionary theory to analysis of human motives and perceptions of self-interest, considering where and why individual interests conflict, using well-documented murder cases. This book attempts to understand normal social motives in murder as products of the process of evolution by natural selection. They note that the implications for psychology are many and profound, touching on such matters as parental affection and rejection, sibling rivalry, sex differences in interests and inclinations, social comparison and achievement motives, our sense of justice, lifespan developmental changes in attitudes, and the phenomenology of the self. This is the first volume of its kind to analyze homicides in the light of a theory of interpersonal conflict. Before this study, no one had compared an observed distribution of victim-killer relationships to "expected" distribution, nor asked about the patterns of killer-victim age disparities in familial killings. This evolutionary psychological approach affords a deeper view and understanding of homicidal violence.

✏Homicide Book Summary : Most professional books on the subject of homicide convey a criminological or legal standpoint. Homicide: A Psychiatric Perspective complements those approaches by offering a clinical understanding unique in the literature, considering not merely the crime but the broad spectrum of homicidal behavior. Combining psychiatric knowledge of that behavior with actual case material, this work provides a single-expert point of view, synthesizing current literature while maintaining a focused perspective that not only reviews the macroscopic findings of descriptive nosology but also places the individual murderer under the microscope. This new edition considers aspects of homicidal behavior in American society that were not prominent a decade ago, as evidenced by such phenomena as the Columbine killings and public fascination with The Sopranos. Dr. Malmquist draws on his extensive background in forensic psychiatry and consultancy experience in hundreds of murder cases, blending medical, biological, psychological, and social factors to forge a psychiatric understanding of homicide in the twenty-first century. He provides insight into such key concerns as epidemiology, the ongoing difficulty of predicting homicidal behavior in psychotic individuals, and the contrasting viewpoints of psychiatry and the legal system; and he describes how various clinical psychiatric conditions such as narcissism and depression have their own special vulnerabilities for homicidal violence. The book uses DSM-IV-TR as a diagnostic framework and adds a psychodynamic component for appropriate cases, offering a broad overview of homicide today: Cases are drawn from evaluated homicidal individuals, not simply generic examples, and reflect homicides that involve a legal conviction, a confession, or clinical material beyond media reportage. New to this edition are insights into recent homicide trends such as sexual and serial murders, school killings, homicide among preadolescents, stalking, murder by health care personnel, and close-combat killings in the military. Statistical data on epidemiology have been updated, recent cases have been added, and the latest legal decisions are discussed -- all making this book as timely as it is authoritative. Homicide: A Psychiatric Perspective is an essential reference for mental health professionals as well as attorneys, correctional officers, or social workers engaged in criminal law. With its keys to evaluating patients or defendants who have engaged in serious acts of violence, it offers unprecedented clinical insights into the homicidal mind.

✏Homicide Book Summary : Echoing Durkheim's Suicide, this book focuses on one important phenomenon to explain larger currents in American society. Leonard Beeghley examines the historical and cross-national dimensions of homicides and evaluates previous attempts to explain it. He finds the sources of America's murder rate in the greater availability of guns, the expansion of illegal drug markets, greater racial discrimination, more exposure to violence, and sharper economic inequalities. He deftly blends the evidence related to each of these factors into a well-reasoned sociological analysis of the nature of American society.

✏Suicide and Homicide Among Adolescents Book Summary : The problem of violence among youth has become increasingly serious. Issues related to adolescent suicide and, to a lesser extent, adolescent homicide have been addressed in the literature, yet few experts have focused on the connections that exist between the two. This groundbreaking volume examines the clinical and epidemiologic similarities and differences between youth suicide and homicide, offering valuable insights into both issues, and providing a foundation for the development of public health policies and prevention strategies. The authors address such questions as: * What are the current rates of adolescent homicide and suicide? What are the long-term trends? * What is the relationship between homicide and suicide? * Is there more of a problem now than in years past? * Is there a relationship between youth violence and the media? * Who is most likely to commit suicide and/or homicide? * What types of treatment and prevention strategies might prove most effective? Ideal for professionals in the various mental health fields, this book is also valuable for anyone working with homicide offenders and the families of suicide and homicide victims, including social workers, politicians, police, clergy, and emergency room personnel.

✏American Murder Homicide in the early 20th century Book Summary : America has long had the reputation as the most violent and murderous of modern industralized nations. Even while violent crime has dropped in recent years, our murder rate is still incredibly high. Since the beginning of the 20th century, our society has undergone profound changes, and our technologies have advanced, but the motives and methods for murder and escaping the long arm of the law have kept pace, often capitalizing on availble technologies. In addition, as the century progressed, the media would become an integral part of murder in America, helping investigations, glamorizing murder, and bringing it into our homes on a daily basis. Here, Scott examines the changing face of murder in the context of societal changes, and traces the advances in investigative techniques and technologies. Each chapter offers vivid accounts of the most notorious and representative murders for each time period, focusing especially on those murderers who have had the edge on their pursuers, even escaping detection to this day. Beginning at the turn of the century, Scott details one of the most notorious cases of the day, in which a jealous lover poisons the wife of her lover. The book ends with the still-unsolved Tupac Shakur murder case. Taking readers through the various developments in methods of murder, and the techniques used to capture the criminals, Scott provides a fascinating overview of the way murder has changed through the decades and how law enforcement has kept pace. This insightful book sheds light on both our fascination with murder and on murderers and their nemeses over the last one hundred years.

✏A New Homicide Act for England and Wales Book Summary : This consultation paper reviews the law relating to homicide in England and Wales, and sets out a number of provisional proposals in order to establish a more rational and coherent framework of legislation. Issues discussed include: the existing law and problems with it; the definition of murder and manslaughter; partial defences including provocation, diminished responsibility and duress; the fault element in murder and the concept of intention; and the doctrine of double-effect. The paper proposes the creation of a new Homicide Act (to replace the Homicide Act 1957) to establish clear definitions of murder and the partial defences to it, as well as defining manslaughter, within a graduated system of offences (the ladder principle) to reflect seriousness of offence and degrees of mitigation. For example, the offence of murder should be divided into two categories, of 'first degree murder' (with a mandatory life sentence) and 'second degree' (with a discretionary life sentence maximum). Responses to the consultation paper proposals should be received by 13.04.2006.

✏Homicide The Hidden Victims Book Summary : The author of this groundbreaking volume is not only a social scientist and victim advocate; she is also the mother of a murder victim. Deborah Spungen illustrates how and why family members become co-victims when a loved one is murdered, and she poignantly addresses the emotional, physical, spiritual and psychological effects of such traumatic events. These "invisible victims" often find their wounds compounded by confusion and a sense of aloneness in the aftermath of such a tragic event. The author draws on research, personal insight and case examples to illuminate critical issues that surround: family notification of a loved one's murder, effects of murder on family and friends of the victim, media influences, traumatic grief, circumstantial influences, the criminal justice system and reconstruction and healing. The book will be invaluable for mental health practitioners and victim advocates.

✏Police Analysis and Planning for Homicide Bombings Book Summary : Police Analysis and Planning for Homicide Bombings is oriented toward planning police operations in the public sector, but will be usable by other public officials as well as by some military and private sector police operations. It addresses police threat assessment of, vulnerability assessment to, defense against and response to attacks by homicide bombs. It begins with an essay on the distinctions between military and police operations and includes an examination of the U.S. counter terrorist policy and structure, assessment of explosive weapons of mass destruction and the terrorist ability to make and use them, the legal limitations of police response operations in the United States, and defensive response to this form of attack. It concludes with commentary on actions that may be needed if this threat continues to develop in the United States. Relying upon both experience and research, the author has synthesized the varied military, law enforcement and private security approaches into a detailed analysis of the threat posed by terrorist use of homicide bombs and the necessary internal response. With the first-hand experience of applying the knowledge in an actual threat environment, the combination of historical perspective and reality confrontation produces an effective examination of the topic for the police administrator and emergency planner.

✏Society and Homicide in Thirteenth Century England Book Summary : Homicide was a frequent occurrence in medieval England. Indeed, violence was regarded as an acceptable, and often necessary, part of life. These are the conclusions reached by the author in his study of homicide patterns in London, Bristol, and five English counties from 1202 to 1276. Using quantitative methods, the author analyzes murder as a social relationship that can tell us much about medieval life and its social organization, much that would otherwise remain unknown. Given investigates murder rates, violent conflicts between family members, masters, servants, and neighbors, and the collaboration between these same groups in assaulting others. He also explores the socio-economic status of killers and victims, the treatment of killers in court, including what attitudes toward violence can be gleaned from judicial verdicts, the effects of urbanization of patterns of homicide, and social factors that impeded or encouraged recourse to violence.

✏Murder Was Not a Crime Book Summary : Embarking on a unique study of Roman criminal law, Judy Gaughan has developed a novel understanding of the nature of social and political power dynamics in republican government. Revealing the significant relationship between political power and attitudes toward homicide in the Roman republic, Murder Was Not a Crime describes a legal system through which families (rather than the government) were given the power to mete out punishment for murder. With implications that could modify the most fundamental beliefs about the Roman republic, Gaughan's research maintains that Roman criminal law did not contain a specific enactment against murder, although it had done so prior to the overthrow of the monarchy. While kings felt an imperative to hold monopoly over the power to kill, Gaughan argues, the republic phase ushered in a form of decentralized government that did not see itself as vulnerable to challenge by an act of murder. And the power possessed by individual families ensured that the government would not attain the responsibility for punishing homicidal violence. Drawing on surviving Roman laws and literary sources, Murder Was Not a Crime also explores the dictator Sulla's "murder law," arguing that it lacked any government concept of murder and was instead simply a collection of earlier statutes repressing poisoning, arson, and the carrying of weapons. Reinterpreting a spectrum of scenarios, Gaughan makes new distinctions between the paternal head of household and his power over life and death, versus the power of consuls and praetors to command and kill.
