✏The Cellular Basis of Central Nervous System HIV 1 Infection and the AIDS Dementia Complex Book Summary : In this exciting symposium, the editor brings to print important new information on AIDS and how HIV affects the brain. Each chapter focuses on one or more of the cell types that reside in or traffic through the central nervous system (CNS). Each of these cells is important to considerations of the pathogenesis of the CNS. Neurologists, AIDS physicians, and other professionals caring for AIDS patients will find that this “cell-based” view provides a unique perspective and that it will guide and stimulate future investigation of this clinically important and pathogenetically intriguing disorder. The editor also introduces some general considerations for therapeutic intervention of AIDS dementia complex (ADC). The contributors to The Cellular Basis of Central Nervous System HIV-1 Infection and the AIDS Dementia Complex deal with the cells and mechanisms involved in HIV-1 brain infection and the resultant ADC. Each author was asked to review the involvement of their assigned cells in CNS HIV-1 infection and how these cells might be involved in the pathology and process of brain injury associated with ADC. Readers will be enlightened on the functional roles of various cells and how these cells and mechanisms might fit into the broader picture of ADC pathogenesis.

✏Neuro AIDS Book Summary : During the past two decades, the world scientific community has witnessed major achievements in our understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV infection of the nervous system and HIV-Associated Dementia (HAD). Despite these giant gains, nervous system involvement during AIDS remains a relentlessly progressive disease with a deadly fate in many cases. This book on NeuroAIDS provides a unique resource for both general neurologists as well as basic neuroscientists with profound interests for research on NeuroAIDS. This book has special emphasis on the mechanisms of disease development and progression of HIV-infected patients with NeuroAIDS. The contributors have provided the readers with comprehensive reviews on clinical manifestations of HAD, mechanisms of HIV entry into the central nervous system, the role of cytokines and chemokines in pathogenesis of NeuroAIDS, drug abuse and NeuroAIDS, virus load in HAD, allostasis in HIV and AIDS, stroke in AIDS patients, and neuroimaging of HIV infection of the central nervous system. In addition, there are chapters on Varicella Zoster virus infection of HIV-seropositive and AIDS patients, as well as the molecular basis for opioids and AIDS virus interactions.

✏HIV AIDS and the Brain Book Summary : Reviews the latest findings on the neurological and psychiatric complications of HIV-1 infection and AIDS, focusing chiefly on the pathogenesis and clinical aspects of a primary neurological disorder--known as the AIDS dementia complex (ADC), HIV cognitive motor complex, HIV dementia, and, in children, HIV encephalopathy--which is caused by HIV-1 itself rather than by an opportunistic organism. The studies presented shed new light on the interactions of HIV-1 with the brain and, more generally, on the pathogenesis of viral and immunological diseases of the central nervous system. ✏Pain Management of AIDS Patients Book Summary : Thousands of articles and many books have been published on the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). There are, however, no studies or case reports and only several articles published on the anesthetic considerations for a person with AIDS or in pain with AIDS. There is no literature on the pain management of AIDS patients. Writing on this subject must be considered trailblazing. The reason anesthesiologists should know about AIDS has rapidly extended from concern over transmission of infection to anesthetic and analgesic considerations. The anesthesiologist may also be part of a pain management team on either an acute or a chronic pain service. The requirement may be to treat an HIV -positive or AIDS patient acutely postoperatively or in consult to a psychiatric, medical, or surgical service. In a pain clinic setting, the anesthesiologist may be concerned with diagnosis, treatment, or referral for other multidisciplinary consultation. The earlier question of central nervous system involvement in AIDS is now moot, rapidly replaced with the knowledge that the eNS, if not primarily infected, is so shortly thereafter. Protected by the blood-brain barrier, the eNS becomes both a sanctuary and reservoir for HIV. Because neurologic complications of HIV are common, and since knowledge of the nervous system is essential for anesthetic and pain management, it is important to review HIV infection of the nervous system.

✏HIV AIDS in the Post HAART Era Book Summary : The science of the virus and its effects and the clinical approaches to its treatment and transmission prevention are placed in the context of the history and epidemiology of the HIV-AIDS pandemic. Each organ system of the body is explored as to manifestations of the disease, treatment now and in the future, as well as what the disease has taught us about the immune response. The science of epidemiology, which is so important in allowing for tracking of the disease and potential limitation of transmission, is another aspect of AIDS explored in detail. The pandemic manifests differently in different parts of the world, and the relevance of the volume is enhanced by its international group of contributors. No other text provides the historical and epidemiological context of this disease along with an update of diagnosis and treatment. The underlying science and epidemiology of AIDS are not neglected, so the student or clinician who is treating patients with AIDS can gain a full understanding of HIV/AIDS in individual patients and in their communities.

✏HIV Infection and the Cardiovascular System Book Summary : Past studies revealed that HIV infection may implicate diverse cardiac diseases such as cardiomyopathy, coronary heart disease, cardiac neoplasms, endocarditis or pericarditis. In addition, it was found that highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) often causes - as an adverse effect - a metabolic syndrome characterized by lipodystrophy/lipoatrophy, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, leading to an increase in coronary artery disease and stroke. This book focuses on the most recent findings in HIV-associated heart disease and HAART-associated metabolic and cardiovascular complications. In a first part, the epidemiology, pathogenesis and molecular biology of HIV-associated cardiovascular disease, pulmonary hypertension, lipodystrophy and HAART-associated metabolic syndrome are reviewed. The second part offers clinical and therapeutic insights into HIV/HAART-associated atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, stroke, vasculitic syndromes, and pulmonary hypertension. Besides, cardiovascular complications in HIV-infected children, cardiac surgery in HIV-infected patients, and the prevention and management of HAART-associated cardiovascular complications are points under discussion. Finally, the interaction between HAART and drugs commonly used to treat cardiovascular disease is carefully analyzed. HIV Infection and the Cardiovascular System presents state-of-the-art findings of basic and clinical scientists and is a valuable reference for specialists in cardiology and internal medicine as well as for infectiologists.

✏Neuropsychology of HIV Infection Book Summary : The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) commonly enters the central nervous system, disturbs brain function, and ultimately results in serious brain damage. The most dangerous manifestation of this infection of the brain is HIV-associated dementia, which includes extreme memory loss, slowness in thinking, disorientation, and social incapacity. Most persons who are HIV-infected do not develop severe dementia; however, perhaps 50% of those with AIDS and a smaller proportion of HIV-infected carriers suffer from more subtle brain disorders that can be revealed by proper neuropsychological testing. This ground-breaking volume is the first to summarize the current state of knowledge about the neurocognitive disorders associated with HIV-1 infection. With contributions from leading authorities in the field, the book fully discusses the prevalence, qualitative features, natural course, and effects of neuropsychological impairments in persons with HIV infection. Neuropsychological data are related to findings from studies of brain imaging, neuropathology, and the effects of antiretroviral treatments. This critical work will be essential for neuropsychologists, infectious disease physicians, neurologists, and all those involved in AIDS research and treatment.
