✏High Resolution NMR Techniques in Organic Chemistry Book Summary : From the initial observation of proton magnetic resonance in water and in paraffin, the discipline of nuclear magnetic resonance has seen unparalleled growth as an analytical method. Modern NMR spectroscopy is a highly developed, yet still evolving, subject which finds application in chemistry, biology, medicine, materials science and geology. In this book, emphasis is on the more recently developed methods of solution-state NMR applicable to chemical research, which are chosen for their wide applicability and robustness. These have, in many cases, already become established techniques in NMR laboratories, in both academic and industrial establishments. A considerable amount of information and guidance is given on the implementation and execution of the techniques described in this book.

✏NMR Spectroscopy in Organic Chemistry Book Summary : In recent years high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spec troscopy has found very wide application in organie chemistry in structural and physicochemical investigations and. also in the study of the characteristics of organic compounds which are re lated to the distribution of the electron cloud in the molecules. The vigorous development of this method, which may really be re garded as an independent branch of science, is the result of ex tensive progress in NMR technology, the refinement of its theory, and the accumulation of large amounts of experimental material, which has been correlated by empiricallaws and principles. The literature directly concerned with the NMR method and its applica tion has now grown to such an extent that a complete review of it is practically impossible. Therefore the authors have limited themselves to an examination of only the most important, funda mental, and general investigations. The book consists of six chapters. In the first chapter we have attempted to present the fundamentals of the NMR method in such a way that the reader with little knowledge of the subject will be able to use the method in practical work for investigating simple compounds and solving simple problems. The three subsequent chapters give a deeper analysis of the method, while the last two chapters and the appendix illustrate the various applications of NMR spectroscopy in organic chemistry.

✏High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy Understanding Molecules and their Electronic Structures Book Summary : The progress in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy that took place during the last several decades is observed in both experimental capabilities and theoretical approaches to study the spectral parameters. The scope of NMR spectroscopy for studying a large series of molecular problems has notably broadened. However, at the same time, it requires specialists to fully use its potentialities. This is a notorious problem and it is reflected in the current literature where this spectroscopy is typically only used in a routine way. Also, it is seldom used in several disciplines in which it could be a powerful tool to study many problems. The main aim of this book is to try to help reverse these trends. This book is divided in three parts dealing with 1) high-resolution NMR parameters; 2) methods for understanding high-resolution NMR parameters; and 3) some experimental aspects of high-resolution NMR parameters for studying molecular structures. Each part is divided into chapters written by different specialists who use different methodologies in their work. In turn, each chapter is divided into sections. Some features of the different sections are highlighted: it is expected that part of the readership will be interested only in the basic aspects of some chapters, while other readers will be interested in deepening their understanding of the subject dealt with in them. Shows how NMR parameters are useful for structure assignment as well as to obtain insight on electronic structures Emphasis on conceptual aspects Contributions by specialists who use the discussed methodologies in their everyday work

✏High Resolution NMR Book Summary : High Resolution NMR provides a broad treatment of the principles and theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as it is used in the chemical sciences. It is written at an "intermediate" level, with mathematics used to augment, rather than replace, clear verbal descriptions of the phenomena. The book is intended to allow a graduate student, advanced undergraduate, or researcher to understand NMR at a fundamental level, and to see illustrations of the applications of NMR to the determination of the structure of small organic molecules and macromolecules, including proteins. Emphasis is on the study of NMR in liquids, but the treatment also includes high resolution NMR in the solid state and the principles of NMR imaging and localized spectroscopy. Careful attention is given to developing and interrelating four approaches - steady state energy levels, the rotating vector picture, the density matrix, and the product operator formalism. The presentation is based on the assumption that the reader has an acquaintance with the general principles of quantum mechanics, but no extensive background in quantum theory or proficiency in mathematics is required. Likewise, no previous background in NMR is assumed, since the book begins with a description of the basic physics, together with a brief account of the historical development of the field. This third edition of High Resolution NMR preserves the "conversational" approach of the previous editions that has been well accepted as a teaching tool. However, more than half the material is new, and the remainder has been revised extensively. Problems are included to reinforce concepts in the book. Uses mathematics to augment, not replace, verbal explanations Written in a clear and conversational style Follows the successful format and approach of two previous editions Revised and updated extensively--about 70 percent of the text is new Includes problems and references to additional reading at the end of each chapter

✏Methods for Structure Elucidation by High Resolution NMR Book Summary : Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) is now widely regarded as having evolved into a subscience. The field has become immensely diverse, ranging from medical use through solid state NMR to liquid state applications, with countless books and scientific journals devoted to these topics. Theoretical as well as experimental advance continues to be rapid, and has in fact accelerated by many novel innovations. This multi-authored book focuses on the latest developments in the rapidly evolving field of high resolution NMR, specifically with a view to applications on the structure elucidation of organic molecules of moderate molecular weight. Conceptually it differs from basic educational texts, hard-core scientific papers and regular review articles in that each chapter may be regarded as the authors' personal account of their special insights and results that crystallised after several years of research into a given topic. The book revolves around several themes and offers a handful of scientific "gems" of various colors, reflecting the great diversity of NMR. It contains 16 loosely connected chapters written by some of today's most accomplished NMR scientists in the world. Each chapter is a unique synthesis of the authors' previous research results in the given field, and thus projects special insights. Much emphasis has been given to the latest developments in NMR, in particular to selective pulses and pulsed field gradients. As a part of the series "Analytical Spectroscopy Library", with subsequent editions coming along this book should provide a platform for future research accounts of similar flavor. The material is presented in a mostly non-mathematical fashion, and is intended mainly for chemists, application NMR scientists and students with already some background in NMR. Some of the chapters slightly overlap in the discussed topics, which is particularly exciting in terms of gaining insight into the same area from different angles.

✏Paramagnetic Complexes in High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy Book Summary : The monograph covers theoretical aspects of the method based on the analysis of NMR spectra transformed by electron-nuclear or hyperfine coupling, and provides examples of its practical application for the solution of different tasks related to structure and intramolecular dynamics of multi-electron systems. The fundamentals of NMR theory in paramagnetic systems were formulated by Blombergen, McConnell, Solomon, Berkheyn and other researchers. However, wide application of HFC specifics for the solution of diverse chemical tasks was triggered later, after the development of a method for analysis of NMR spectra transformed by additives of paramagnetic complexes. The book consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 discloses the fundamentals of high resolution NMR spectra transformed by hyperfine coupling. The two other chapters illustrate fruitfulness and prospects of the application of NMR phenomenon in paramagnetic systems for studying molecular structure. Examples of specific spectra, analyzed in the monograph, are selected in such a way that they could help a reader understand a circle of possible problems which are solved using peculiarities of the NMR phenomenon in paramagnetic systems. The same examples also illustrate the techniques which can be employed for obtaining information on the molecular structure of both ligands and complexes using their NMR spectra transformed by hyperfine coupling.

✏Principles of High Resolution NMR in Solids Book Summary : The field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has developed at a fascinating pace during the last decade. It always has been an extremely valuable tool to the organic chemist by supplying molecular "finger print" spectra at the atomic level. Unfortunately the high resolution achievable in liquid solutions could not be obtained in solids and physicists and physical chemists had to live with unresolved lines open to a wealth of curve fitting procedures and a vast amount of speculations. High resolution NMR in solids seemed to be a paradoxon. Broad structure less lines are usually encountered when dealing with NMR in solids. Only with the recent advent of mUltiple pulse, magic angle, cross-polarization, two-dimen sional and multiple-quantum spectroscopy and other techniques during the last decade it became possible to resolve finer details of nuclear spin interactions in solids. I have felt that graduate students, researchers and others beginning to get involved with these techniques needed a book which treats the principles, theo retical foundations and applications of these rather sophisticated experimental techniques. Therefore I wrote a monograph on the subject in 1976. Very soon new ideas led to the developement of "two-dimensional spectroscopy" and "multiple-quantum spectroscopy", topics which were not covered in the first edition of my book. Moreover an exponential growth of literature appeared in this area of research leaving the beginner in an awkward situation of tracing back from a current article to the roots of the experiment.

✏NMR Spectroscopy Book Summary : Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and widely used techniques in chemical research for investigating structures and dynamics of molecules. Advanced methods can even be utilized for structure determinations of biopolymers, for example proteins or nucleic acids. NMR is also used in medicine for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The method is based on spectral lines of different atomic nuclei that are excited when a strong magnetic field and a radiofrequency transmitter are applied. The method is very sensitive to the features of molecular structure because also the neighboring atoms influence the signals from individual nuclei and this is important for determining the 3D-structure of molecules. This new edition of the popular classic has a clear style and a highly practical, mostly non-mathematical approach. Many examples are taken from organic and organometallic chemistry, making this book an invaluable guide to undergraduate and graduate students of organic chemistry, biochemistry, spectroscopy or physical chemistry, and to researchers using this well-established and extremely important technique. Problems and solutions are included.

✏Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry III Book Summary : Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry, (COMC-III), Third Edition, 13 Volume Set is aimed at the specialist and non-specialist alike. It covers the major developments in the field in a carefully presented way with extensive cross-references. COMC-III provides a clear and comprehensive overview of developments since 1993 and attempts to predict trends in the field over the next ten years. Applications of organometallic chemistry continue to expand and this has been reflected by the significant increase in the number of volumes devoted to applications in COMC-III. Organic chemists have edited the volumes on organometallic chemistry towards organic synthesis - this is now organized by reaction type so as to be readily accessible to the organic community. Like its predecessors, COMC (1982) and COMC-II (1995), this new work is the essential reference text for any chemist or technologist who needs to use or apply organometallic compounds. Also available online via ScienceDirect (2006) - featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. ✏Instrumental Methods in Food Analysis Book Summary : Instrumental Methods in Food Analysis is aimed at graduate students in the science, technology and engineering of food and nutrition who have completed an advanced course in food analysis. The book is designed to fit in with one or more such courses, as it covers the whole range of methods applied to food analysis, including chromatographic techniques (HPLC and GC), spectroscopic techniques (AA and ICP), electroanalytical and electrophoresis techniques. No analysis can be made without appropriate sample preparation and in view of the present economic climate, the search for new ways to prepare samples is becoming increasingly important. Guided by the need for environmentally-friendly technologies, the editors chose two, relatively new techniques, the microwave-assisted processes (MAPTM (Chapter 10) and supercritical fluid extraction (Chapter 11). Features of this book: - is one the few academic books on food analysis specifically designed for a one semester or one year course -it contains updated information - the coverage gives a good balance between theory, and applications of techniques to various food commodities. The chapters are divided into two distinct sections: the first is a description of the basic theory regarding the technique and the second is dedicated to a description of examples to which the reader can relate in his/her daily work.

✏Structural Identification of Organic Compounds with Spectroscopic Techniques Book Summary : Clearly structured, easy to read and optimal to understand, this extensive compendium fills the gap between textbooks devoted to either spectra interpretation or basic physical principles. The original Chinese editions have already sold over 18,500 copies, and the material is taken from the latest literature from around the world, plus technical information provided by the manufacturers of spectroscopic instruments. Alongside basic methods, Professor Ning presents up-to-date developments in NMR, MS, IR and Raman spectroscopy, such as pulsed-field gradient technique, LC-NMR, and DOSY. He stresses the application of spectroscopic methods, interpreting them in great detail and depth since most of the selected spectra may be applied to practical work, as well as summarizing the rules for their interpretation. He also incorporates his original ideas, including a comparison of the common points in different spectroscopic techniques. This monograph features a unique structure, a typical example being the discussion of 2D NMR starting from pulse sequence units, which construct various pulse sequences for related 2D NMR. A complete chapter deals with the determination of configurations and conformations of organic compounds and even biological molecules from the viewpoint of spectroscopic methodologies, while one whole section is dedicated to the interpretation of mass spectra produced by soft ionization techniques. The principles of mass analyzers, especially the ion trap, are discussed in great depth, together with a concise summary of the MS fragmentation and rearrangement of common compounds, allowing readers to easily predict related mass spectrometric reactions. All the three kinds of library retrieval of mass spectra are presented in detail, together with recent developments in molecular vibration spectroscopy. The whole is rounded off with several appendices, including a subject index for rapid reference. With a foreword by the Nobel prizewinner, Richard R. Ernst.
