Fourteen years ago, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to the abduction of her cousin Gina. She still remembers that lonely Virginia road. She can still see the masked stranger and hear Gina's screams. And she still suffers the guilt of running away in fear and resents being interrogated as a suspect in the immediate aftermath. But when a woman Kaitlin questions is later found stabbed to death, she fears that she's drawn a killer out of hiding. It's Detective John Adler's fear that the murders have only just begun. Now his job is to keep Kaitlin safe. As a bond between Kaitlin and Adler builds, the past closes in just as fast--and it's darker than Kaitlin remembers. Soon, her wish will come true. ✏Last Words Book Summary : For readers who enjoyed The Nightingale, Sarah's Key, and All the Light We Cannot See. Last Words, where Non-Fiction meets Fiction, and the lines in between are blurred by forbidden love. Amelia - 1942: The inside of my closet held the last bit of my freedom before I was torn from my home and shoved onto a dark train. Our destination was even darker. "Women and children to the right. Men to the left," they shouted at us. Everything was taken from me, leaving only the smoke filled air, piercing screams, and soul-burning cries. I was slowly starved and weakened to the bone, but there was a man-a Nazi-who brought me extra food. He called himself a prisoner too, but he scared me, and I wondered if he was the enemy I should fear the most. Emma - Current Day: My grandmother hid her past in an old diary under her bed. The tattered, brown leather book sat there for years until she asked me to find it and read her unspoken words. Now, her stories and secrets are consuming every moment of my life. She's dying ... and asking for a man no one in our family has ever heard of. I never imagined a hand-written book could change my entire life, but it has. It opened my eyes to a new beginning, and I learned that love is not the unsaid word my grandmother has refused to speak. It's an action-it's longevity, taboo and sometimes forbidden. Do we fight for what's wrong, or do we spend our lives searching for what's right? Last words were never spoken because love doesn't stop until a heart is no longer beating.

✏The Last Word Book Summary : "Mamoon Azam is an eminent Indian-born writer who has made a career in England--but now, in his early seventies, his reputation is fading, his book sales are nonexistent, and his flamboyant second wife's expensive habits are bleeding him dry. In an attempt to revitalize his career and reputation, Mamoon's publisher commissions Harry, an ambitious young writer, to pen the famous writer's biography. Honored and slightly intimidated, Harry promises himself that he will present an unbiased look at his literary hero--but Mamoon's publisher is after a more naked truth, a salacious tale of the author's life that will generate headlines. Meanwhile, Mamoon is less than cooperative. Vain, breathtakingly cynical, and cruelly manipulative, Mamoon turns out to have ahidden agenda of his own. Harry and Mamoon find themselves in a battle of wills, but which of them will have the last word? The ensuing struggle for dominance raises questions of love and desire, loyalty and betrayal, and the frailties of age versus the recklessness of youth. A poignant and brilliantly entertaining book, THE LAST WORD is a tale of youthful exuberance, as hilarious as it is moving, and is Kureishi's most important work to date"--

✏Diana The Last Word Book Summary : During the last five years of her life, Princess Diana had one friend and confidante who was special to her. She was not part of Diana's social circle; she was not a family friend. That woman was Simone Simmons, a healer, who devoted herself to the troubled Princess. Simone formed a unique bond with Diana. They met almost everyday and spent hours on the telephone. Diana opened her heart and mind to Simone, who always told the Princess the unvarnished truth. No subject was taboo, and the two women discussed everything and anything, sharing laughter and tears over cups of chamomile tea. Since Diana appreciated and trusted her friend's candor, Simone got to know the Princess in a way no one else has ever done. With Simone, Diana felt confident enough to express her true self. In 1997, Diana told her friend she wanted her to write a book which revealed the truth about her, to "tell it like it is." This is that book. It is truly the last word. With her extraordinary insight into Diana's life, Simone captures the soul of the Princess and creates an intimate and rich portrait of one of the great icons of the 20th Century. In these pages, Simone describes how it really was: who among the royals was good to Diana and who was hateful; her need to be in love and to have an affair; her only fling—with John F. Kennedy, Jr.—at the Carlisle hotel; her real relationship with Paul Burrell; why she inflicted self-harm; how she wanted to move to New York or Los Angeles; how Mother Teresa hurt her; why her relationship with Dodi never would have ended in marriage; and her enduring love for Prince Charles. Though Diana was extremely insecure, with Simone's help and work she became strong and learned that she could heal others around her. DIANA—THE LAST WORD is the fascinating story of how she reached that point. It finally settles the unanswered questions of Diana's life and addresses the many revelations that have materialized since her death.

✏Immortal Last Words Book Summary : Immortal Last Words is a fascinating, diverse collection of history's most uplifting, entertaining and thought-provoking dying remarks and final farewells. The 370 entries in this book have been drawn from some of history's greatest statesmen, poets, scientists, novelists and warriors - the eminent men and women who have shaped events over the last four and a half millennia and whose final recorded words have often inspired great deeds or shed light on the nature of the human condition. There are also entries are from less well- known individuals who did not make such an impact on history but whose dying words are equally noteworthy as they encapsulate the spirit of the times or simply reflect the character of the speaker. And finally, the pages of this book contain the last words of some of most ignoble personalities in history - the monsters and maniacs whose final defiant utterances prompt us to reflect on the nature of evil and man's inhumanity to man. Arranged chronologically from antiquity to the present day, each entry is accompanied by contextual information giving a brief biography of the author and an explanation of the circumstances that gave rise to the quotation. Some of the sentiments expressed are unbelievably sad while others are optimistic; some final words have become famous while others have remained obscure, but all reflect the follies and greatness of mankind - its heroes and villains, war and peace and the absolute power of language to change our feelings and challenge our minds. Sample entries include: Buddha 'Strive for your own liberation with diligence'; Vespasian 'Dear me, I believe I am becoming a god'; Thomas Hobbes, 'I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark'; Robespierre 'Death is the commencement of immortality!'; George Washington'Tis well'; John Keats 'Here lies one whose name was writ in water'; John Maynard Keynes'I should have drunk more champagne'; Salvador Dalí 'I do not believe in my death'; Keith Floyd 'I've not felt this well for ages.'

✏Dr Dan s Last Word on Babies and Other Humans Book Summary : 1ST FLAP COPY Several years ago, while I was rounding at one of the Brigham and Women's Hospital nurseries, a new father shared a funny story with me. Early the previous morning, this new father went to the hospital lobby in search of coffee and bagels. While waiting in line at the coffee shop, the father noticed a man enter the lobby. He was struck by the odd appearance of this man. In the midst of a brutally cold New England winter, this man was dressed in a bicycle racing shirt, shorts, ski socks pulled up to his knobby knees, ankle weights, a hos- pital ID badge around his neck, and a propeller att- ached to the top of his bicycle helmet. When he returned to his wife's hospital room, he told her about his experience. This new dad worked in the human services field and was very impressed that the hospital was so progressive as to hire such an obviously mentally challenged person. About ten minutes passed when the new parents heard a loud knock on the hospital room door. To their surprise, shock, astonishment and horror, the same man walked into the room-complete with the propeller helmet, shorts, ski socks, ankle weights. Now the man had a stethoscope around his neck and was pushing a portable crib with their new baby! Greeting the shocked and befuddled new parents, the man proudly announced his arrival. "Hi, I'm Dr. Heller. I'm your pediatrician and am here to exam- ine your baby." Dr. Dan was, without a doubt, the most unique, charismatic and outgoing individual who one will ever meet. As one mother remarked to me, 'You will always remember the first time you met Dr. Dan." Bruce Bunnell, MD, Dr. Heller's partner of 15 years at Centre Pediatrics, told this story at a memorial sevice for Dr. Heller in 2005. 2nd FLAP: "Having Dr. Heller for a doctor was like having Mary Poppins for a nanny." -Parent, Sara B. "Dr. Dan was an original-that's the only way I know how to put it. He is such a huge part of our family history that memories keep flooding in. For example, when our daughter finally slept through the night after months of disturbing our sleep, my husband and I were not only shocked: as new parents, we were also worried that her brand new sleep pattern might signal a serious medical problem. Dr. Dan was on when I called, and I will never forget how he questioned me closely about symp- toms and listened very carefully to all I said. Then, as I hung on to every word of diagnosis he could provide for me, he slowly explained, 'That, Mrs. L, is what we in the medical profession refer to as ...a blessing!'" -Parent, Susan L.

✏The Story About the Story Book Summary : The essays in The Story About the Story Vol. II chart a trajectory that digs deep into the past and aims toward a future in which literature can play a new and more profound role in how we think, read, live, and write. In the second volume of The Story About the Story, editor J. C. Hallman continues to argue for an alternative to the staid five-paragraph-essay writing that has inoculated so many against the effects of good books. Writers have long approached writing about reading from an intensely personal perspective, incorporating their pasts and their passions into their process of interpretation. Never before collected in a single volume, the many essays Hallman has compiled build on the idea of a "creative criticism," and offers new possibilities for how to write about reading. The Story About the Story Vol. II documents not only an identifiable trend in writing about books that can and should be emulated, it also offers lessons from a remarkable range of celebrated authors that amount to an invaluable course on both how to write and how to read well. Whether they discuss a staple of the canon (Thomas Mann on Leo Tolstoy), the merits of a contemporary (Vivian Gornick on Grace Paley), a pillar of genre-writing (Jane Tompkins on Louis L’Amour), or, arguably, the funniest man on the planet (David Shields on Bill Murray), these essays are by turns poignant, smart, suggestive, intellectual, humorous, sassy, scathing, laudatory, wistful, and hopeful—and above all deeply engaged in a process of careful reading. The essays in The Story About the Story Vol. II chart a trajectory that digs deep into the past and aims toward a future in which literature can play a new and more profound role in how we think, read, live, and write.

✏2076 REAGAN S LAST WORD Book Summary : In 1976, Ronald Reagan, at the Republican Convention, announced he placed a letter in a time capsule to be opened in Los Angeles in 2076. In a speech given at that convention, Reagan expressed his concern that the people of 2076 would never get to read the letter because it spoke of individual freedom. America, 2076—the United States has been fundamentally changed, and the government controls every aspect of daily life—medical decisions, consumption, speech, transportation, even the right to be alive—all in the name of social justice. Michael Adams, a journalism student, writes an article about America’s Tercentennial and wonders if his generation understands what it means to be an American. He discovers a plot to destroy the Reagan letter, its message no longer welcome in a country where liberty has died and tyranny rules. He turns to the man who introduced him to Reagan’s ideas—Calvin Marshall, a history professor who is hiding, and only his granddaughter, Michael’s ex-girlfriend, Jackie Perez, knows of his whereabouts. Soon, Michael goes on the run, persecuted by a federal agent determined to silence him at any cost. To keep the letter from being destroyed, he has to face the agent, community organizers, rats, strippers, high-speed trains, bandits, Obamobiles, a terrible family dinner, and a bad movie. As he continues to run for his life, Reagan’s warning becomes all too real. “They probably won’t get to read the letter at all because it spoke of individual freedom . . .” www.2076reaganslastword.com

✏The Last Word on Power Book Summary : How leaders can achieve something meaningful—transform a brand, a workplace, a technology, themselves—beyond holding an influential position. Do you want to do work that is worthy of your time and talent? Do you want to make your mark on your industry, company, or within your community? Are you satisfied with the fact that reengineering, quality improvements, and other changes never really make a lasting impact? Then you need to go beyond the techniques of improvement and learn the skills that it takes to be extraordinary. The power to be extraordinary is not one we are born with. Rather, it is a power that one can learn, and Tracy Goss helps executives realize this power. Here in this book for the first time, Goss makes her coursework available to the general reader. Goss’s unique methodology shows how you how you can “put at risk the success you’ve become for the power of making the impossible happen.” She positions executives to take on the future that they dream about. She teaches how to behave differently so that you are free of past constraints. She shows how you can be at home in the environment in which you are constantly surrounded by threats, and how to transcend the ordinary to make the impossible happen. Her work has resulted in many important life changes and organizational reinventions worldwide. “Goss offers powerful information, far above the glib self-help mush that already lines the shelves. She answers the fundamental question of why management fads do not work: the personal work has not yet been done.” —Library Journal

✏Famous Last Words Book Summary : Famous Last Words traces a broad historical transition- from the 1840s to the 1980s- from the more rigid dichotomy of the Victorian novel, in which good women must marry and fallen women die, to the more open alternatives of twentieth-century fiction, which sometimes permit the independent female protagonist to survive and occasionally allow alternative constructions of gender as well as plot. Each essay treats a narrative- novel, novella, or novel poem- by a single author in light of conventions of closure and of gender in historical context. The contributors recover forgotten texts, revise our understanding of women writers once successful, but now somewhat marginalized, and give voice to cultural "others." Works by the already canonized George Eliot are reassessed, and the representation of women in the canonical novels of male writers William Thackeray and Henry James is explored.
