✏Head and Neck Pathology Book Summary : A Doody's Core Title 2012 The head and neck is the site of some of the most diverse and histologically complex tumors in the human body. Within this small, highly specialized region, one finds a remarkable range of tissues, including skin, mucosal surfaces, soft tissue, bone, lymph nodes, peripheral and central nervous system tissue, paraganglia, endocrine organs, salivary glands and odontogenic structures. Compounding the issue, biopsies are often small, frequently distorted and difficult to orient for paraffin embedding, all of which impact evaluation and diagnosis, even for experienced pathologists. Head and Neck Pathology presents fifty cases for discussion and illustration. The cases have been selected to show the wide range of specimens seen in head and neck pathology and address some of the frequent encountered in these lesions. The goal of this unique book is to provide detailed insight into a wealth of expert experience in such cases, with in-depth review of the expert's analysis and diagnostic process supported by high-quality color photomicrographs and discussion of the diagnostic principles involved in evaluating these lesions. Head and Neck Pathology is essential reading for surgical pathologists, otolaryngologists and pathologists. In addition it will be of interest to pathology and otolaryngology residents and fellows. About the Series The Consultant Pathology series is designed to disseminate the knowledge of expert surgical pathology consultants in the analysis and diagnosis of difficult cases to the full community of pathology practitioners. The volumes are based on actual consultations and presented in a format that illustrates the expert's process of evaluating the case, including indications for consultation, the consultant's findings and comment, and discussion of the entity that amplifies the case description. Each volume in the Consultant Pathology series is authored by international experts with extensive case experience in the areas covered.

✏Practical Head and Neck Pathology Book Summary : Practical Head and Neck Pathology: Frequently Asked Questions centers around frequently asked questions, but it is not meant to be comprehensive in its approach. Instead, it aims to touch on all major or commonly encountered entities. Each chapter begins with a list of questions typically ordered from basic histologic knowledge, to inflammatory processes, primary tumors, and secondary tumor types. Strategies for the diagnosis of salivary gland, metastatic head and neck cancers and thyroid disease using ancillary testing is highlighted. Small biopsy dilemmas in undifferentiated tumors of the sinonasal and nasopharyngeal tracts are undertaken with emphasis on differential diagnosis and ancillary techniques. The tables are the foundation of the book, offering a quick reference guide for salient features of various entities and differential diagnoses. A comprehensive set of references after each question can be used to supplement the information provided and give the reader a foundation for further learning. This book answers some of the difficult, prevailing and emerging questions in head and neck pathology that arise in everyday practice. While such challenges may not always be frequent, they have tremendous impact on clinical practice. Clinically pertinent, molecular advances in treatment and diagnosis for the practicing and junior pathologist are covered.

HPV positivity may point towards a likely oropharyngeal primary in unknown primary neck lumps. Objectives To determine if p16 status is routinely performed in diagnostic biopsies and cytological samples from suspected oropharyngeal HNSCCs. Methods An audit was performed of all new referrals to the Head and Neck MDT. Results P16 status was not reported in 38% of clinically relevant subsites (oropharynx and unknown primary). All were deemed clinically important and hence performed after request from the MDT. ConclusionsP16 should be performed routinely in HNSCCs biopsies and cytological samples from the oropharynx and unknown primary neck lumps to prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment decisions. Cytology specimens need to be collected in cytospin collection fluid rather than slides to enable p16 analysis.
