Jute fibers are chemically treated to improve fiber/matrix interface adhesion and moisture induced degradation. Biodegradable composites are manufactured using jute fabrics, biodegradable polymer and with/without nanoclay using the compression molding process. The effects of surface treatment and nanoclay on the jute based composites were characterized by thermal, mechanical, and physical analyses. Surface treated jute fiber reinforced composites showed better performances compared to untreated fiber reinforced composites. Nanoclay infused composites showed better thermal, mechanical, and physical properties compared to conventional composites.

However, the available materials are not yet suitable for making strong, large or durable objects. Composites are materials which are very strong and lightweight, combining the tensile strength of a fibre and the compressive strength of a resin matrix. Unfortunately, tooling for composite parts is currently expensive, slow to make, and therefore out of reach for many small-scale projects. Furthermore, popular composites are toxic to the environment and the people who work with them. Green-, eco- or bio- composites employ natural fibres in conjunction with biodegradable, renewably sourced or less toxic (in use and in manufacturing) matrices. Benefits of using natural fibre composites are that besides being light, strong and less toxic, they are also cheaper, of lower density, easier to work with and more environmentally friendly than carbon- or glass-fibre composites. The latest techniques and efforts on green composites however remain firmly in the lab- the resources evaluated are not readily accessible for manufacturing in the field. Local specialised projects now can use digital fabrication tools to realise structures previously considered prohibitively expensive to manufacture without an economy of scale. But because of the cost, difficulty and potential health hazards of composites, they have not yet been explored as a material for small scale local manufacturing. Digitally fabricated tooling introduces composite manufacturing as a rapid prototyping method. Green composites enable worker-safe manufacturing with environmentally friendly materials. Together, digitally fabricated tooling and green composite workflows allow faster, cheaper, stronger and less toxic large-scale prototyping in the field. I present an evaluation of green(er) composite materials which can be sourced and made in the field using low-cost digitally fabricated tooling. ✏Green Composites of Polylactic Acid Filled with Natural Fiber for Biodegradation Application Book Summary : This research focuses on how to use natural fibers available from agricultural residues to produce biodegradable materials such as mulch films. Green composites were prepared from natural fibers (peanut shell and bagasse fiber) and polylactic acid (PLA) together with plasticizers. The presence of plasticizers improved PLA molecular mobility as seen by the reduction of glass transition, cold crystallization, and melting temperatures. The addition of natural fibers into PLA brought down decomposition temperature when compared to PLA. The morphological study of the composites showed poor interfacial adhesion between natural fibers and PLA matrix. Moreover, the loading of plasticizers improved distribution of natural fibers in PLA matrix. The composites revealed that tensile strength decreased while Young’s modulus increased with increasing natural fibers content. The added plasticizers into the composites showed increase elongation at break and impact strength. Thermo−mechanical properties revealed improvement of PLA performance at high temperature use by the addition of natural fibers together with plasticizers due to cold crystallization at a high temperature, which developed high storage modulus. The composites showed low water vapor permeability which reduced moisture loss by evaporation and increased the efficiency of water use. The enhancements in degradation of the composites were due to the presence of natural fibers. Furthermore, the study of chemical crosslinking PLA in the presence of crosslinking agent showed that the optimum of thermal, thermo–mechanical, and rheological properties were at 5 phr crosslinking agent content.
