📒Getting Wrecked ✍ Kimberly Sue
✏Getting Wrecked Book Summary : Getting Wrecked provides a rich ethnographic account of women battling addiction as they cycle through jail, prison, and community treatment programs in Massachusetts. As incarceration has become a predominant American social policy for managing the problem of drug use, including the opioid epidemic, this book examines how prisons and jails have attempted concurrent programs of punishment and treatment to deal with inmates struggling with a diagnosis of substance use disorder. An addiction physician and medical anthropologist, Kimberly Sue powerfully illustrates the impacts of incarceration on women’s lives as they seek well-being and better health while confronting lives marked by structural violence, gender inequity, and ongoing trauma.
📒The Art Of Getting Wrecked ✍ Peter Roren
✏The Art of Getting Wrecked Book Summary : The Art of Getting Wrecked is the true story about what led the author to build a yacht in his garden, sail off to circumnavigate the world, and hopefully, somewhere along the route, find his roots, dreams, and Shangri La. His dream of a circumnavigation was put on hold in the Caribbean when he was shipwrecked after hitting a reef at night. Peter and his mate Mariann raise their dream while living on the beach and go on to survive just about everything that can be thrown at sailors- tropical storms, a Latin-American revolution, a mutiny, and two dismastings. Peter's 35 years on a tiny tropical island are described with pathos, wit, and gentle humour. His amazing story offers a whimsical mix of observation, opinion, and anecdote. By choice he is thrust into a small Caribbean island culture, which he describes with sincerity, warmth, and respect for the people of Bequia. His Island in the Sun, where he has lived the good life since 1984.

I'm not sure how to begin this review and remain professional... so I'll just be honest. I FUDGING loved this book! (SOOO SOOO MUCH!) It was fantastic!=)..." ~ Nancy Figueroa, Tumbling Books, book blog “A Fun Debut Novel! My favorite part of the book was their time on the island. The character dynamics were well done, and Casey clearly put a lot of thought into what they would need to do to survive, not just physically but emotionally. This was a fun book and a promising debut novel..." ~ Ally Arendt, Word Vagabond “Fun read! I am a big fan of young adult books, this is one of my favorites. I have actually re read this book multiple times.” ~ Hipsterduck, Amazon Reviewer “This book, for lack of a better word, was amazing. From the character intros, to the last page, I was intrigued. Elle clearly understood teens, because all of their motivations and goals were believable; even the way in which they became stranded was believable. I LOVED EVERY aspect of this book. I definitely recommend it, a must-read.” ~ Brandon, Goodreads Reviewer A note about the series: I pretty much grew up on the East Coast of Florida, so I went to the beach a lot, and whenever I did, I was always looking out at the water wondering … “What if…?” What if I were stranded out on a boat somewhere, in shark-infested waters, and then washed up on a beach of a deserted island… How would I survive? For probably 30 years or more, I contemplated these questions every time I went to the beach or thought about the water, so I had a LOT of time to think about the details. This book was inside my head, in the making, for a really long time. That’s why it’s the first book I wrote, because it was finally time to get it out of my head and onto paper (or I should say, into my computer). When I found out about self-publishing for the Kindle, I thought, “What the heck? Maybe someone will like it as much as I do.” Now, several years later, with over 40 books written and a few spots on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists, I can say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It literally changed my life. I’m really glad that I spent so much time daydreaming while I was at the beach, and I’m even happier that I took a chance on this story and shared it with the world. **SEQUEL ALERT** This book was originally written without plans for a sequel. But so many readers asked for one, it was done. Published on December 31, 2012, RECKLESS picks up where WRECKED left off.

📒Offending Girls ✍ Gilly Sharpe
✏Offending Girls Book Summary : At the dawn of the twenty-first century, panic about girls’ offending in Britain reached fever pitch. No longer sugar and spice, a ‘new breed’ of girl, the hedonistic, violent, binge-drinking ‘ladette’, was reported to have emerged. At the same time, the number of young women entering the youth justice system, including youth custody, increased dramatically. Offending Girls challenges simplistic and demonising popular representations of 'bad' girls and examines what exactly is new about the ‘new’ offending girl. In the light of enormous social and cultural changes affecting girls’ lives, and expectations of them, since previous British research in this area, the book investigates whether popular stereotypes problematising female youthful behaviour resonate with the accounts of criminalised young women themselves, and to what extent they have infiltrated professional youth justice discourse. Through the lens of original detailed qualitative research in two Youth Offending Teams and a Secure Training Centre – the first study of its kind since the 'modernisation' of the youth justice system over a decade ago – Offending Girls questions whether the ‘new’ youth justice system is delivering justice for girls and young women. It also contends that the panic about an ‘unprecedented crime wave’ amongst girls is not supported by robust evidence, but that the interventionist thrust which characterises contemporary youth justice has had a particularly pernicious impact on girls. It will be key reading for students and academics working in the areas of criminology, criminal and youth justice, education, gender studies, youth studies, social work, sociology and social policy, as well as youth and criminal justice practitioners and policy-makers.
