✏Advanced Concept Value Analysis for Geothermal Power Plants Book Summary : A simplified screening method was developed for providing the preliminary economic assessment of advanced concepts to be used for achieving improved utilization of hydrothermal resources. The method was applied to evaluate the effect on cost of electricity of a number of plant improvements and/or modifications. Phase I evaluations, presented in this initial report, pertain to concepts for which cycle performance analyses had been completed previously, and include economic evaluations of regenerative preheating, use of working fluid mixtures, floating power, expansion of turbine flow through the moisture region, direct-contact heating, effect of maintaining a geofluid outlet temperature sufficient to avoid silica precipitation, and effects of several significant capital cost changes. These evaluations were made assuming a 360°F liquid-dominated resource. The results indicate that use of a turbine exhaust recuperator, a counter-flow condenser, and a 0.96 isobutane/0.04 heptane working fluid can reduce the cost of electricity by more than 13 percent, relative to a reference plant which corresponds approximately to the 50MW Heber Plant in Imperial Valley, California (when the geofluid outlet temperature is maintained at 160°F). A turbine expansion process in which the equilibrium states pass through the moisture region could potentially increase the plant performance and reduce the cost of electricity by an additional five or six percent. Evaluation of direct-contact heaters suggests that with very optimistic assumptions, relatively small reductions in cost of electricity (well under five percent) should be expected, at best, through their use if resource chemistry permits moderate cost tubing materials (such as AL-29-4) to be used in shell-and-tube heaters. Generally, modest increments in plant output, at the same geofluid flow, provide more significant impacts on cost of power than substantial changes in capital cost of major plant components. Accordingly, for resources containing sufficient dissolved solids to result in unacceptable heat-exchanger tubing corrosion and/or fouling, use of direct-contact heat exchangers, even though accompanied by additional plant components for working fluid recovery, can be expected to result in a relatively small impact on cost of power.

The purpose of the study was to define the most technically feasible and lowest cost near-term energy conversion process for a 50 MWe geothermal power plant at the Salton Sea known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA). Using the latest information from the Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility (GLEF), which is currently in operation at the Salton Sea KGRA, conceptual designs, capital cost estimates, and busbar energy production cost estimates were developed for power plants employing several versions of flashed steam and flash binary energy conversion processes. A power plant and well field risk analysis was also performed. The results show that while the flashed steam plant has the advantage of lower plant capital cost, the brine flow rate required by the binary plant is lower. This results in busbar energy production costs for the two plants that are the same. However, the risk analysis indicates that the technical risks are less for the flashed steam further work at the GLEF. The version of the flashed steam process with lowest energy production cost was the dual-flash process with three 50 percent capacity trains of flash tanks with unmodified brine. Thus, it was determined that GLEF testing in the immediate future should be directed primarily toward this process. A series of GLEP tests and further studies were defined for the purpose of alleviating or minimizing the major risks associated with the flash steam process. The most important risks were found to be those associated with brine handling. They include producing the brine, carrying it through the plant, and injecting it into the subsurface formation. ✏Optimal Combined Heat and power Plant for a Low temperature Geothermal Source Book Summary : Abstract: This work compares the performance of four combined heat-and-power (CHP) configurations for application in a binary geothermal plant connected to a low-temperature 65/40 and a high-temperature 90/60 district heating system. The investigated configurations are the series, the parallel, the preheat-parallel and the HB4 configurations. The geothermal source conditions have been defined based on existing geothermal plants in the northwest of Europe. Production temperatures in the range of 110–150°C and mass flow rates in the range of 100–200kg/s are considered. The goal is to identify the best-performing CHP configuration for every set of geothermal source conditions (temperature and flow rate) and for multiple values of the heat demand. The electrical power output is used as the optimization objective and the different CHP plants are compared based on the exergetic plant efficiency. The optimal CHP plant has always a higher exergetic plant efficiency than the pure electrical power plant; up to 22.8%-pts higher for the connection to a 65/40 DH system and up to 20.9%-pts higher for the connection to a 90/60 DH system. The highest increase of the exergetic plant efficiency over the pure electrical power plant is obtained for low values of the geothermal source temperature and flow rate. A demonstration plant has been designed which is capable of removing 99% of the H2S, 90% of the NH3, and significant amounts of H3BO3 and particulates from 100,000 lb/hr of geothermal steam of The Geysers composition. Criteria for the mechanical and process design of the scrubber have been confirmed in field tests of fifty hours duration on an eight-inch diameter scrubber at PG and E's Unit No. 7, The Geysers. The background of the problem and the technical approach to its solution, the scope and results of the first-phase laboratory testing, the scope and results of the experimental and analytical studies carried out in the second phase, and a description of the configuration of the demonstration plant and the test plan for its operation are summarized.
