✏Gait Analysis Book Summary : There has been an increasing interest among clinicians in the quantitative assessment of the human locomotor function. The importance of this application in the orthopedic field is fundamental and requires further developments. Several studies have been published about gait analysis, many specific papers are available in literature, and a lot of conferences, symposiums and congresses have been dedicated to this matter. The quantity of information is enormous and sometimes it is not easy for the beginner to manage the different acquisition systems, acquisition methodologies and clinical interpretation of the resultant data. However, the consciousness of gait analysis s effective utility both in the research finding and in clinical decision making has made it indispensable in the present context. Our attempt, through this volume is to present an overview. Since we have worked up to now both in research and in clinical gait analysis, we have followed two major approaches in developing, on one hand the more appropriate methodology to obtain accurate and precise data, and on the other hand the best clinical results.

✏Forensic Gait Analysis Book Summary : Gait analysis is the systematic study of human walking, using the eye and brain of experienced observers, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles. Since Aristotle’s work on gait analysis more than 2000 years ago, it has become an established clinical science used extensively in the healthcare and rehabilitation fields for diagnosis and treatment. Forensic Gait Analysis details the more recent, and rapidly developing, uses of gait analysis in the forensic sciences. This includes using observational gait analysis, especially based on video recordings, to assist in the process of identifying individuals. With the increase in use of CCTV and surveillance systems over the last 20 to 30 years, there has been a steady and rapid increase in the use of gait as evidence. Currently, gait analysis is widely used in the UK in criminal investigations, with increasing awareness of its potential use in the US, Europe, and globally. The book details the history of the science, current practices, and emergent application to establish best-practice standards that conform to those of other forensic science disciplines. Engagement with the Forensic Science Regulator, the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences in the UK, and the International Association for Identification has helped to ensure and enhance the quality assurance of forensic gait analysis. However, there remains a fundamental lack of standardized training and methodology for use in an evidentiary and investigative capacity. This book fills that void, serving as one of the first books to reflect the state of current practice and capabilities—outlining a standard of practice and expectations as to what gait analysis, and by association gait analysis experts, and corroborate. Forensic Gait Analysis will reflect the research and current forensic practices and serve as a state-of-the-art, definitive guide to the use of gait analysis in the forensic context—for both education and training purposes. It will be a welcome addition to the library of professionals in the areas of podiatry, gait analysis, forensic video analysis, law enforcement, and legal practitioners.

✏Optimization of a Markerless Gait Analysis Application Aimed at Orthopedic Care for Developing Countries Book Summary : Abstract : In this work, a low-budget markerless gait analysis application that is aimed at orthopedic care was built and optimized for use in developing countries and small practices. The application utilizes Microsoft Kinect to detect and track body joints and then calculates nine gait parameters that are important for performing a gait assessment. By tracking the progression of the lower limb joints over time, we were able to measure motion angles for these joints. Also, the following spatial and temporal parameters were extracted using the data received from the Kinect: swing time, stance time, stride length, step width and speed. For testing and evaluation, the application was validated using gait data from 10 participants. The measurements of the hip flexion/extension, hip abduction/adduction and knee flexion/extension followed the graphs of standard gait pattern. Also they were consistent and homogeneous among all ten participants. Due to the low tracking accuracy for both the ankle and the foot, measurements of ankle plantar flexion and dorsiflexion didn't follow the trajectory of the standard graph. Moreover, measurements from all ten participants were sparsely distributed across their average value. To overcome the tracking accuracy of the Kinect in non-ideal conditions, a novel algorithm was proposed and implemented for joint inference. The algorithm uses the subject's gait pattern and geometric relationships between the lower limb joints to infer the ankle joint position

✏The Identification and Treatment of Gait Problems in Cerebral Palsy Book Summary : The only book to deal specifically with the treatment of gait problems in cerebral palsy, this comprehensive, multi-disciplinary volume will be invaluable for all those working in the field of cerebral palsy and gait (neurologists, therapists, physiatrists, orthopaedic and neurosurgeons, and bioengineers). The book is divided into two parts. The first is designed to help the reader evaluate and understand a child with cerebral palsy. It deals with neurological control, musculoskeletal growth, and normal gait, as well as cerebral injury, growth deformities and gait pathology in children with cerebral palsy. The second section is a comprehensive overview of management. It emphasizes the most fundamental concept of treatment: manage the child's neurologic dysfunction first and then address the skeletal and muscular consequences of that dysfunction. The book has been thoroughly updated since the previous edition, with a greater focus on treatment and several entirely new topics covered, including chapters on the operative treatment of orthopaedic deformities. The book is accompanied by a DVD containing a teaching video on normal gait and a CD-ROM containing the videos and motion analysis data of all case examples used in the book, as well as teaching videos demonstrating the specifics of many of the procedures used in the correction of gait deformities and gait modelling examples from the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University.

✏Gait Analysis and Therapeutic Application of Carbon Monoxide in a Rodent Model of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1 Book Summary : Complex regional pain syndrome type-I (CRPS-I) is a debilitating pain disorder often occurring secondary to distal extremity trauma. Its pathophysiology is not well understood; however, microvascular dysfunction is proposed as an important factor in its development and maintenance. Using a rodent model, we tested an automated gait analysis system (CatWalkTM) to examine functional changes. In addition, the use of carbon monoxide releasing molecule-3 (CORM-3), a compound known to be a potent vasodilator and anti-inflammatory agent, was also tested as a treatment of CRPS-I-like symptoms. Using the CatWalkTM system, we observed significant changes in gait parameters post-injury, several of which persisted throughout the 14-day experiment. CORM-3 administration significantly reduced mechanical allodynia symptoms, as demonstrated through the restoration of withdrawal thresholds during mechanical stimulation testing. Functional deficits were not restored after CORM-3 application; however, trends for improvement were observed. CORM-3 has relevance as a potential therapy to alleviate symptoms associated with CRPS-I.

✏The Contribution of Gait Analysis to the Understanding of Moter Development Book Summary : "Findings from two studies are presented. Both focused on the gait of Australian primary aged children and the information that this fundamental motor skill provides towards understanding the development of motor performance. In study one 87 (47 male, 40 female) children (5–9 years) participated. Children were tested using the Movement assessment battery for children (MABC) (Henderson & Sugden, 1996), and the GAITRite walkway system. Gait parameters of the motor impaired and typically developing children were compared. Walking at a self-selected normal pace the motor impaired children did not significantly differ from their typically developing peers. A comparison of the gait parameters across the three age-bands tested (4–6, 7–8 & 9–10 years) showed cadence and double support time to differ significantly between the first and second age-bands with cadence decreasing and double support time increasing with age. The variability of walking velocity and cadence both decreased significantly from age-band 1 to 2. Further a greater percentage of the motor impaired children were classified as overweight according to their BMI. Two important improvements in the experimental design were introduced for the larger second study (n = 218: 102 Male, 116 Female) ranging in age from 5–12 years. Firstly, slow and fast walking speeds were added to the normal walking speed condition to increase the task demand. Secondly, performance on the balance component only of the MABC was used as the criterion for impairment in this analysis. Developmental trends were most evident for the stride-to-stride gait variability measurements. Specifically, the velocity, cadence, step length and base of support were all significantly more variable in the 11 and 12 year old children in comparison to the young adult group. It was suggested from these findings that the underlying process regulationg the sequence of gait was not yet fully mature at age 12. ..."--Abstract.
