Zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), such as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), have zero tailpipe emissions, but still can be considerably more expensive than ICEVs, which is one key factor hampering their wide-scale adoption. Still, many decarbonization roadmaps and plans call for a large ramp up of ZEVs in coming years. For example, the International Energy Agency's aggressive 2DS high H2 scenario estimates 11M BEVs and 4M FCEVs sold in 2030 and California has also set aggressive sales targets under its ZEV Mandate. This paper provides a detailed life cycle cost analysis comparison for FCEV versus other vehicle technologies, assuming these international adoption scenarios are implemented using a learning rate approach. Results show that the fuel cell system is the key factor in making FCEV life cycle costs comparable to ICEV costs. With an 18% learning rate, FCEVs are estimated to be cost competitive with ICEVs by 2025, but with an 8% learning rate, this cost-competitive point is pushed out almost 25 years. Highlights: Fuel cell system learning rate is the key factor for FCEV cost competitiveness. FCEV cost of ownership trends for different adoption scenarios converge after 2030. These results are found to hold for a wide variety of sensitivity factors.

This study proposes a novel fuel cell (FC)/supercapacitor (SC) hybrid power source to be utilized in FCHEVs. The power source includes a 90kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack used as the main power source, and a 600F SC bank used as the auxiliary energy storage device. A prototype of the FC/SC hybrid power source has been constructed, and experimental verifications are presented that explicitly substantiate having a power efficiency of 96.2% around the rated power, highly accurate DC-link voltage regulation and producing an appropriate three-phase stator current supplied to the traction motor by using PWM technique are the main contributions of this work. Providing a maximum speed of 158km/h, 0–100km/h acceleration in 12.2s and a cruising range of 435km for a FCHEV with the weight of 1880kg are the other advantages. The proposed FC/SC hybrid power source is also compared to the state of the art of all kinds of power sources used in FCHEVs that clearly demonstrates its better performances such as higher power efficiency, speed and acceleration.

The fuel cell, known as a high specific energy source at the present time, is one of the well-known alternative sources of electric power generation when given consideration for decreasing oil consumption and hazardous CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, one of the main weak points of the fuel cell is its time constants dominated by temperature and fuel delivery system (pumps, valves, and in some cases, a hydrogen reformer). As a result, fast load demand will cause a high voltage drop in a short time, recognised as a fuel starvation phenomenon. One must limit the fuel cell current (or power) slope to prevent fuel starvation problems, to improve its performance and lifetime. Therefore, to employ a PEM fuel cell in dynamic applications, the electrical system must have at least an auxiliary power source to improve system performance when electrical loads at a DC bus demand high energy in a short time, as well. The possibilities to use a supercapacitor or battery bank as an auxiliary source with a fuel cell main source is presented in detail. The very fast power response and high specific power of a supercapacitor or high specific energy of battery can complement the slower power output of the main source to produce the compatibility and performance characteristics needed in a load.

✏System Level Modelling of Fuel Cell Driven Electric Cars Book Summary : Nowadays, climate change is an issue of major concern for the majority of the world's society. Not just the emission of Greenhouse Gases but also the brutal pace at which fossil fuels are being consumed. Within that topic and having innovation in mind, several alternatives have risen in the automotive industry in order to address this issue such as Battery Electric Vehicles or more recently at a commercial scale, Fuel Cell Vehicles. This last technology uses hydrogen as a fuel and transforms the chemical energy generated in the reaction with oxygen in electricity able to drive an electric motor, usually a PMSM. This report will try to take an insight in this technology using different approaches. To do so, literature work will be done in order to review Hydrogen production, transportation and storage and how is now positioned as an energy resource in the world. Moreover, fuel cell technologies will be reviewed and explained as well as compared. Also, some literature work will be done in order to explain how a fuel cell vehicle operates and which are the most important elements of its drivetrain, also evaluating cost and feasibility of this kind of automotive solution. Having reviewed the current state of the art of fuel cell technologies, this report will explain how the electric drivetrain of a fuel cell vehicle can be modelled in a Simulation platform such as MATLAB/Simulink. The most important elements of the fuel cell vehicle drivetrain will be modelled (Fuel cell stack, boost converter, power systems, etc.) and will be tested to see how they behave on its own and as a part of a small vehicle fuel cell drivetrain. With the obtained results several conclusions were extracted as well as some future work pathways such as adapting the small scale model to a full power commercial vehicle model. In all, this report will try to make clear how fuel cell vehicles can be considered as a feasible alternative to substitute conventional mobility methods.

✏Overcoming the Range Limitation of Medium Duty Battery Electric Vehicles Through the Use of Hydrogen Fuel Cells Book Summary : Battery electric vehicles possess great potential for decreasing lifecycle costs in medium-duty applications, a market segment currently dominated by internal combustion technology. Characterized by frequent repetition of similar routes and daily return to a central depot, medium-duty vocations are well positioned to leverage the low operating costs of battery electric vehicles. Unfortunately, the range limitation of commercially available battery electric vehicles acts as a barrier to widespread adoption. This paper describes the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and industry partners to analyze the use of small hydrogen fuel-cell stacks to extend the range of battery electric vehicles as a means of improving utility, and presumably, increasing market adoption. This analysis employs real-world vocational data and near-term economic assumptions to (1) identify optimal component configurations for minimizing lifecycle costs, (2) benchmark economic performance relative to both battery electric and conventional powertrains, and (3) understand how the optimal design and its competitiveness change with respect to duty cycle and economic climate. It is found that small fuel-cell power units provide extended range at significantly lower capital and lifecycle costs than additional battery capacity alone. And while fuel-cell range-extended vehicles are not deemed economically competitive with conventional vehicles given present-day economic conditions, this paper identifies potential future scenarios where cost equivalency is achieved.
