✏Foundation Grants to Individuals Book Summary : The only publication devoted exclusively to foundation funding opportunities for individual grantseekers, Foundation Grants to Individuals is an essential volume that no funding resource library or individual grantseeker should be without. The new 10th Edition is the largest ever published, with 800 more entries than the previous edition! The volume now features over 3,200 entries packed with the current information that individual grantseekers need most: addresses, contact names, financial data, application information, program descriptions, and more. Each section includes foundations that award millions of dollars each year to individuals: educational support (scholarships and student loans); general welfare; arts and cultural support; awards, prizes, and grants by nomination; international applicants; company employees (education and general welfare); students and graduates of specific schools; and a new section for research and professional support. Six indexes help users target prospective grants by subject area, types of support (such as scholarships, loans, or travel grants), geographic area, sponsoring company (for employee restricted awards), educational institution (for grants limited to specific schools), and grantmaker name. A revised annotated bibliography refers grantseekers to additional resources on funding opportunities for individuals in many subject categories.

✏The Individual s Guide to Grants Book Summary : This book is a work of conscience. It is the product of a long-standing feeling of obligation on my part to write something useful for a special group of people to which you probably belong-individuals who seek grants. In my years as Director of the New York library of The Foundation Center, * each and every day I encountered numbers of individuals look ing for grant money. Although I tried to be as supportive as possible, in the face of the particular problems shared by this group of library users, my own reaction was one of relative helplessness. Simply stated, most of the fund-raising guides, printed directories, and computer files purport edly created to serve the fund-raising public are of little or no use to individuals who seek funding on their own. These resources are directed *The Foundation Center is the independent, nonprofit organization established by foun dations to provide information for the grant-seeking public. vii viii I PREFACE toward the nonprofit, tax-exempt agency, which is the most common recipient of foundation, corporate, and government largess. They are not designed to respond to the special requirements of the individual grant seeker. In the applicant eligibility index, the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance defines individuals as "homeowners, students, farmers, artists, scientists, consumers, small-business persons, minors, refugees, aliens, veterans, senior citizens, low-income persons, health and educational professionals, builders, contractors, developers, handicapped persons, the physically afflicted." In short, practically everyone qualifies.

✏The Power and Limits of NGOs Book Summary : Since the end of the Cold War, a virtual army of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) from the United States, Britain, Germany, and elsewhere in Europe have flocked to Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia. These NGOs are working on such diverse tasks as helping to establish competitive political parties, elections, and independent media, as well as trying to reduce ethnic conflict. This important book is among the few efforts to assess the impact of these international efforts to build democratic institutions. The case studies presented here provide a portrait of the mechanisms by which ideas commonly associated with democratic states have evolved in formerly communist states, revealing conditions that help as well as hurt the process.

✏Governing Nonprofit Organizations Book Summary : The nonprofit sector is a vital component of our society and is allowed the greatest freedom to operate. The public understandably assumes that since nonprofit organizations are established to do good, the people who run nonprofits are altruistic, and the laws governing nonprofits have reflected this assumption. But as Marion Fremont-Smith argues, the rules that govern how nonprofits operate are inadequate, and the regulatory mechanisms designed to enforce the rules need improvement. Despite repeated instances of negligent management, self-interest at the expense of the charity, and outright fraud, nonprofits continue to receive minimal government regulation. In this time of increased demand for corporate accountability, the need to strengthen regulation of nonprofits is obvious. Fremont-Smith addresses this need from a historical, legal, and organizational perspective. She combines summaries and analysis of the substantive legal rules governing the behavior of charitable officers, directors, and trustees with descriptions of the federal and state regulatory schemes designed to enforce these rules. Her unique and exhaustive historical survey of the law of nonprofit organizations provides a foundation for her analysis of the effectiveness of current law and proposals for its improvement.

✏Foundation Fundamentals Book Summary : Guidelines concerning what grantseekers should know about foundations before they ask for money and how to find the facts needed to obtain a grant are presented. There are basically three types of private foundations (independent, operating, and company-sponsored) and one type of public foundation (community foundations) that are of interest to grantseekers. It is suggested that nonprofit organizations should explore their eligibility for federal funding carefully before approaching any other funding source. Corporations give through separately established foundations and through corporate contributions programs operated within their companies. Individuals are also a significant source of funding. Larger foundations differ from small foundations in a number of significant ways, which are of importance to grantees. Data on funding patterns of all foundations by asset categories and grant categories are presented, along with data on assets, grants, and gifts of foundations by state. Suggestions to provide alternative funding possibilities for individuals and organizations that lack official nonprofit status are offered. Specific steps for finding foundations that are in the grantseeker's geographic area and that are interested in the grantseeker's field are examined. Research steps for learning about a foundation and details on the information sources are presented, along with a proposal checklist, and an IRS form for tax exempt private foundations. Appended materials include a sample subject search, geographic searches, a bibliography of area foundation directories, and a list of reference collections operated by the Foundation Center. (SW)
