✏Food Safety Issues in the Developing World Book Summary : Food safety is receiving more attention worldwide with the rising incidence of foodborne disease, concern over new potential hazards, and growth in agricultural trade. Investments to improve food safety in developing countries can reduce the burden of disease and remove the barriers to fresh food product exports, providing another source of income for the rural sector. International disputes over sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures influence the ability of developing countries to compete in export markets. These countries need to evaluate their interest in the SPS agreement under the World Trade Organisation (WTO); participate more fully in international agencies responsible for harmonisation; develop the capacity to assess equivalence for process standards, which are increasingly used for fresh food products; and resist the imposition of inappropriate standards.

✏A Kaizen Approach to Food Safety Book Summary : This book provides a Management Science approach to quality management in food production. Aspects of food quality, product conformance and reliability/food safety are examined, starting with wheat and ending with its value chain transformation into bread. Protein qualities that influence glycemic index levels in bread are used to compare the value chains of France and the US. With Kaizen models the book shows how changes in these characteristics are the result of management decisions made by the wheat growers in response to government policy and industry strategy. Lately, it provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply kaizen methodology and Deming's work on quality improvement to make the HACCPs (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) in food safety systems more robust.

✏Food and Nutrition in the Middle East 1970 1986 Book Summary : This bibliography fills a gap in the reference literature on nutrition in the Middle East by providing abstracts of all studies published from 1970 through 1986. It continues the work that was started by A Decade of Nutrition Research in the Arab World 1960-1970, published by the American University of Beirut. The geographic scope of the bibliography includes Algeria, Bahrain, egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emiratges, and North and South Yemen; it also includes studies from other countries, such as Afghanistan, that have substantial Arab or Islamic populations. Information is also supplied for works that examine the nutrition of Middle Eastern guest workers and their families in Europe, or which focus on Islamic migrants to that continent. Relevant intercountry studies, projects, and conferences are referenced as well. The population focus of this bibliography is on people who consume primarily the Middle Eastern diet. Although human nutrition is the main subject, this necessarily also involves works which treat animal nutrition, toxicology, agriculture, epidemiology, parasitology, food technology, medical therapy, and cultural practices. The bibliography is organized and cross-indexed by years of publication, country examined, first author's last name, and main and secondary topics for ease of use. English-language abstracts are provided for every article.

✏The Middle East and South Asia 2014 Book Summary : This volume is designed to place in context the passionate controversies and emotional attachments of the two billion people who live, study, work, love, and die in the Middle East and South Asia. Understanding these regions means more than annually-updated details of the governments, politics, cultures, and economies of the twenty-four nations and assorted territories. Special chapters address significant issues of continuing international importance, including access to water, the role of oil, and the 2011 Arab spring. Both regions, after all, contain types of people misunderstood and often intensely disliked by others. Where religion intrudes on politics—the Afghan Taliban oppose educating girls, Hindu fanatics rampage in India, Iranian militiamen shoot demonstrators, Islamic extremists impose sharia, and Jewish Ultra-Orthodox send women to the back of the bus—readers bombarded with superficial news bites and slanted reporting might never sense the other accomplishments of these same societies. Islamic charities and societies bring relief to the impoverished, Israel’s scholars win Nobel prizes, and most Indians cherish long-standing religious toleration. The author of this volume attempts to let the reader draw conclusions from the evidence.

✏Sustaining Gains in Poverty Reduction and Human Development in the Middle East and North Africa Book Summary : This book reviews the experience of the MENA region with poverty and human development since the mid-1980s. It finds that poverty rates did not decline by much during this period while health and education indicators improved substantially. ✏The Future of Public Administration around the World Book Summary : A once-in-a-generation event held every twenty years, the Minnowbrook conference brings together the top scholars in public administration and public management to reflect on the state of the field and its future. This unique volume brings together a group of distinguished authors—both seasoned and new—for a rare critical examination of the field of public administration yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The book begins by examining the ideas of previous Minnowbrook conferences, such as relevance and change, which are reflective of the 1960s and 1980s. It then moves beyond old Minnowbrook concepts to focus on public administration challenges of the future: globalism, twenty-first century collaborative governance, the role of information technology in governance, deliberative democracy and public participation, the organization of the future, and teaching the next generation of leaders. The book ends by coming full circle to examine the current challenge of remaining relevant. There is no other book like this—nor is there ever likely to be another—in print. Simply put, the ideas, concepts, and spirit of Minnowbrook are one-of-a-kind. This book captures the soul of public administration past, present, and future, and is a must-read for anyone serious about the theory and practice of public administration.

✏Food Chain Security Book Summary : The pilot study on Food Chain Security was launched in 2003 by NATO Public Diplomacy Division Science for Peace and Security Section (SPS) under the leadership of Turkey. The purpose of the study was to study the safety and security of food stuffs in the face of their careless/ignorant handling as well as against expected terrorist attacks at the system which may destroy and/or degrade it at the source during distribution, processing and in the consumption phase. The study included the protective and response measures which may have to be taken to reduce the risk and mitigate the consequences of these threats to the food system. The final outputs of this pilot study were agreed to be mainly: To allow comparison between country partners To identify common weaknesses of the food systems As a result of the terrible September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States the nature of the terrorist threat appears to be more uncertain and diffused, therefore the terrorist threat against the food system which comprises production, processing, distribution, restaurants, and retail can be very diverse and unpredictable and involve chemical, biological, and radiological agents of various kinds. Preparing for all possible contingencies was not practical, so a “risk management approach” was used in this study based on risk management principles that acknowledge while risk generally cannot be eliminated, enhancing protection from known or potential threats can reduce it.

✏Livestock farming systems Book Summary : Livestock farming increasingly means much more than just food production and product quality is no longer simply synonymous with food safety and the provision of energy and protein nutrients. This book examines the variety of reasons for this shift in thinking and provides a basis for a new approach to livestock farming systems. The topical issues for product quality based on local resources are addressed from a variety of angles, including genomics, land use, the consumer preference and human nutrition. The book focusses on the following topics, using examples from all over the world: the current change in views and values on quality of animal products; the specificity of traditional dairy and meat products and the technology of processing; the role of local breeds and traditional livestock farming systems in today's society; the search for local avenues for sustainable development of livestock farming systems. The book serves as a reference point for scientists, practitioners in the livestock industry, teachers and students in animal sciences, national and international institutions and policy-makers. It is of interest to all those who wish to gain an overview of the current challenges in the establishment of priorities and the search for operational solutions for animal production development, while at the same time considering the benefit to consumers, the environment and local economies.
