✏Gender and Power in the Japanese Visual Field Book Summary : In this, the first collection in English of feminist-oriented research on Japanese art and visual culture, an international group of scholars examines representations of women in a wide range of visual work. The volume begins with Chino Kaori's now-classic essay Gender in Japanese Art, which introduced feminist theory to Japanese art. This is followed by a closer look at a famous thirteenth-century battle scroll and the production of bijin (beautiful women) prints within the world of Edoperiod advertising. A rare homoerotic picture-book is used to extrapolate the grammar of desire as represented in late seventeenth-century Edo. In the modern period, contributors consider the introduction to Meiji Japan of the Western nude and oil-painting and examine Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and the role of one of its famous artists. The book then shifts its focus to an examination of paintings produced for the Japanese-sponsored annual salons held in colonial Korea. The post-war period comes under scrutiny in a study of the novel Woman in the Dunes and its film adaptation. The critical discourse that surrounded women artists of the late twentieth-century - the Super Girls of Art - i

✏Constructing Shadows Book Summary : Trees are ideal sources of shade; where they cannot be used, their function is taken over by tents, pergolas, and pavilions. In the context of global warming, shade-providing construction is becoming an increasingly important building task. In Part One of this book, specialists in the field present the typical forms of shade-providing construction as well as the design approach associated with each. Part Two presents easily consultable overviews of 140 plants that have proven to be effective givers of shade in temperate, subtropical, and tropical zones. Part Three presents thirty built projects by celebrated architects and landscape architects from five continents. These constructions illustrate a wide variety of functions and scales and cover various climatic zones and cultural contexts. All structures are constructionally and systematically analyzed with texts, true-to-scale drawings, and photographs from their foundations to their connections and the shadows they cast.

✏Dancing with Shadows Book Summary : Scientific determinism, Tarot cards, Cinema, Music, Love, and Quantum Physics. The narrator negotiates love, murder, and war in this captivating philosophical journey. Pradhan is exceptional in showing the narrator's holistic approach to understanding. Quantum physics and love. A united theory of everything? It is an idealistic adolescent goal, and this is what makes Dancing with Shadows so interesting. This is a coming of age story of a young man in East Africa whose intuition tells him that these things are all connected. In his growing self-awareness and world weariness, he is obsessed with connecting the dots of his life in order to reveal some profound significance (i. e. the "music of God"). Who hasn't pondered such questions? How is my life unique or significant? How much more would life mean to me if I understood, say, the music of God...and what is the music of God? Although he is a young man continually preoccupied with sex and love, he is essentially a philosopher. He wants to understand things such as the life application of a quantum wave collapse or the difference between sex and love. This story is a Hamlet-esque self-portrait in his constant questioning. It echoes the uncertain and awkward, yet outwardly confident manner of Holden Caulfield. But above all, this story made me think of the kind quest for mystical self-importance that I recall from Joyce's narrator in "Araby."
