✏Fish Physiology Fish Neuroendocrinology Book Summary : The study of fish neuroendocrinology has had a significant impact on our general understanding of the functional roles and evolution of a variety of neurochemical messengers and systems. Not only do fish possess unique neuroendocrine features, they have also been and remain an important vertebrate models for the discovery of new neuropeptides. In the last fifty years, neuroendocrinologists have documented a complex and seemingly infinite number of interactions between hormones and nerve structures. Gradually emerging from this knowledge is an understanding of the specific neurohormonal pathways and the messengers responsible for maintaining homeostasis in an aquatic environment and for regulating the functional systems that allow for the highly diverse life histories and reproductive tactics of fish Despite its recent growth, breadth and unique attributes, there is no single text covering the discipline of fish neuroendocrinology. In fact, other than a few mammalian neuroendocrinology textbooks, there is a serious lack of texts in comparative neuroendocrinology. Currently, information on the anatomical organization and function of the various neuroendocrine systems in fish is only available in original research papers and reviews. By providing a current and comprehensive volume that highlights the specific properties of fish neuroendocrinology, this book will go beyond being the only reference text for fish neuroendocrinologists and will also serve comparative physiologists, endocrinologists, neuroanatomists and behaviourists interested in understanding the reciprocal actions between the nervous and endocrine systems. * Highlights the specific properties of fish neuroendocrinology * Emphasises the range and variety of interactions between neurobiology and endocrinology * Discuses both anatomical and functional aspects of the Neuroendocrine system * Also serves comparative physiologists, endocrinologists, neuroanatomists and behaviourists interested in understanding the reciprocal actions between the nervous and endocrine systems

✏Neuropeptide GPCRs in neuroendocrinology Book Summary : The human genome encompasses ˜ 860 G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) including 374 non-chemosensory GPCRs. Half of these latter GPCRs recognize (neuro)peptides as natural ligands. GPCRs thus play a pivotal role in neuroendocrine communication. In particular, GPCRs are involved in the neuroendocrine control of feeding behavior, reproduction, growth, hydromineral homeostasis and stress response. GPCRs are also major drug targets and hence possess a strong potential for the development of innovative pharmaceuticals. The aim of this Research Topic was to assemble a series of review articles and original research papers on neuropeptide GPCRs and their ligands that would illustrate the different facets of the studies currently conducted in this domain.

✏Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes Book Summary : Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes is the first integrated review of the reproductive biology of the bony fishes, which are the most species-rich and diversified group of vertebrates. Teleosts display remarkable variation in their modes of reproduction, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for understanding the remarkable reproductive diversity of this group. It describes their reproductive biology using, wherever possible, phylogenetic analyses and life-history theory as a means to interpret the information. The book addresses the genetic, physiological, behavioural, ecological, evolutionary and applied aspects of teleost reproduction in a comparative framework that emphasises the adaptive basis of reproductive diversity. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes provides a comprehensive synthesis of fish reproduction that will be of great interest to life scientists, particularly ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists and advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers requiring a comprehensive overview of fish reproduction. The book is suitable for courses in fish biology and ecology, reproductive physiology and reproductive genetics. It also addresses applied questions and will be of value for courses on fisheries science and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries science and aquaculture are studied and taught should have several copies of this important book on their shelves.

✏Phenotypic Plasticity in the Neuroendocrine Axis of a Teleost Fish with Alternative Reproductive Tactics Porichthys Notatus Book Summary : The plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus, is a marine teleost fish which breeds seasonally in the intertidal zone along the western coast of the United States and Canada. Midshipman exhibit two classes or morphs of adult reproductive males, known as alternative reproductive tactics. The three classes of adult midshipman (type I males, type II males, and females) differ in a suite of behavioral, morphological, neural and endocrine traits. The location and variation of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) mRNA was mapped in each of the morphs and juveniles. GnRH mRNA was found in the olfactory bulb, terminal nerve ganglion, ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus (VL), and the anterior parvocellular, suprachiasmatic, and magnocellular divisions of the preoptic area. Because several of these nuclei are known to be involved with visual functions, projections from the retina were mapped. Neuronal tract-tracing from the retina delineated VL as part of a retinal-thalamic loop containing GnRH mRNA. Optic nerve transection and tetrodotoxin (TTX) injections in the eye were used to determine the effect of retinal input on GnRH gene expression in VL. The distribution of arginine vasotocin-containing neurons (AVT) was described and quantified for the three reproductive morphs and juveniles using immunocytochemistry. AVT-immunoreactive (ir) neurons were found in the terminal nerve ganglion, preoptic area and stalk of the pineal organ. Type II males had a juvenile-like AVT neuronal phenotype with smaller cells (proportionate to their body size) and more cells per gram body mass than type I males and females. To determine if social conditions could influence the development of males towards one morph-type, juvenile males were matched for body size and raised either under sparse or dense social conditions. More densely populated tanks tend to have a higher proportion of type II males; the results were statistically significant for those years with similar disease treatments. The rearing environment was also shown to influence the number of AVT-ir neurons found in the preoptic area. In pairs of animals matched by morph and for body size, the animal raised under more dense social conditions consistently had more AVT-ir neurons in the preoptic area.

✏Fish Energetics Book Summary : It is almost thirty years since Professor G. G. Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives.
