✏Introduction to Thermal Analysis Book Summary : The aim of this book is, as its title suggests, to help sOilleone with little or no knowledge of what thermal analysis can do, to find out briefly what the subject is all about, to decide whether it will be of use to him or her, and to help in getting started on the more common techniques. Some of the less-common techniques are mentioned, but more specialized texts should be consulted before venturing into these areas. This book arose out of a set of notes prepared for courses on thermal analysis given at instrument workshops organized by'the S.A. Chemical Institute. It has also been useful for similar short courses given at various universities and technikons. I have made extensive use ofthe manufacturers' literature, and I am grateful to them for this information. A wide variety of applications has been drawn from the literature to use as examples and these are acknowledged in the text. A fuller list of the books, reviews and other literature ofthermal analysis is given towards the back of this book. The model-free iso-conversional methods were used for kinetic analysis. Interactions occurred depending on the characteristics of the biomass. TGA/MS and TGA/FT-IR coupling were used for gas analysis of co-pyrolysis for the first time. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on polystyrene (PS) during co-pyrolysis with biomass through thermal decomposition. The model-free iso-conversional methods (Kissinger, Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, Starink and Vyazovkin) were adopted to calculate activation energy of the pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis process of two biomass samples (walnut shell: WS and peach stones: PST) with PS. It is found that biomass blending to PS decreased activation energy values and resulted in multi-step reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, changes in the evolution profiles of methyl, water, methoxy, carbon dioxide, benzene and styrene was monitored through evolved gas analysis via TGA/FT-IR and TGA/MS. Detection of temperature dependent release of volatiles indicated the differences occur as a result of compositional differences of biomass.

✏Evaluation of Straw with Absorbed Glycerol Thermal Degradation During Pyrolysis and Combustion by TG FTIR and TG GC MS Book Summary : Abstract: Despite the interest in second generation biofuels produced from straw, an increased attention on the by-products (glycerol) of the biodiesel production still remains. With the increase of biodiesel production year by year, new possibilities for glycerol utilization attract more attention. One possible use of glycerol is as a binder material for straw or other biomass pellets production. Thermal behaviour of straw pellets containing 0 and 14 wt% of glycerol was analysed using a Netzsch STA 449 F3 Jupiter thermal analyser. The scope of this work is investigation of formation and development of the most toxic carbonyl group compounds (with special focus on acrolein, propane, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde) during combustion and thermal destruction of straw pellets depending on the absorbed amount of raw glycerol, atmosphere and heating rate by thermogravimetric (TG) and evolved gas analysis (TG-FTIR and TG-GC/MS) methods. Possible pathways of main carbonyl products formation were analysed. Evolved gas analysis by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods revealed the maximum absorbance of alcohol at the wavelength of 1055 cm −1 and the increasing abundance of ion current of m / z = 61 which corresponds mainly to glycerol. Besides, analysis of the formation of aldehydes showed that the addition of the glycerol to the straw does not stimulate the excessive formation of toxic and unwanted emissions.
