Changes to energy behaviour — the role of people and organisations in energy production, use and efficiency — are critical to supporting a societal transition towards a low carbon and more sustainable future. However, which changes need to be made, by whom, and with what technologies are still very much under discussion. This book, developed by a diverse range of experts, presents an international and multi-faceted approach to the sociotechnical challenge of engaging people in energy systems and vice versa. By providing a multidisciplinary view of this field, it encourages critical thinking about core theories, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and policy challenges. It concludes by addressing new areas where additional evidence is required for interventions and policy-making. It is designed to appeal to new entrants in the energy-efficiency and behaviour field, particularly those taking a quantitative approach to the topic. Concurrently, it recognizes ecological economist Herman Daly’s insight: what really counts is often not countable. Introduces the major disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding energy and behaviour Delivers a cross-sectoral overview including energy behaviour in buildings, industry, transportation, smart grids, and smart cities Reviews a selection of innovative energy behaviour modelling approaches, including agent-based modelling, optimization, and decision support Critically addresses the importance of interventions, policies, and regulatory design

This book highlights the importance of human behaviour in the building design process, with a focus on the construction of zero-energy buildings. It reports on and discusses the strategies the authors have adopted to develop behavioural models, and explains how to integrate them into building design. The analyses and findings presented in the book are supported by novel experimental data derived from building monitoring projects carried out by the authors’ research group. Further, the book suggests key methodologies and modelling

This book strives to present the results of research into the consumption of goods and services in Czech households. The first two chapters focus on the effect of consumption on the environment and theoretical approaches towards consumption and behaviour analysis. The remaining five chapters look into consumer behaviour and its significant effect on the environment, such as a demand for energy and transport, energy-saving measures in households, car ownership and organic food consumption. This book aims to point out the

This book argues that there is no way to make progress in building a sustainable future without extensive participation of non-state actors. The volume explores the contribution of non-state actors to a sustainable transition, starting with citizens and communities of different kinds and ending with cities and city-networks. The authors analyse social, cultural, political and economic drivers and barriers for this transition, from individual behaviour to structural restraints, and investigate interplay between the two. Through a series of wide-ranging case

It is widely recognised that climate change poses significant serious threats to sustained economic growth and agricultural development, poverty reduction, food security and political stability globally. Nowhere are these challenges more marked than in Africa where two-thirds of all available land is classified either as desert or dry land, in relation to which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (2013) has classified the continent as the most vulnerable to climate change variability. This anthology is a product of a call

More than a generation of Gennan-speaking students around the world have worked their way to an understanding and appreciation of the power and beauty of modern theoretical physics - with mathematics, the most fundamental of sciences - using Walter Greiner's textbooks as their guide. The idea of developing a coherent, complete presentation of an entire field of science in a series of closely related textbooks is not a new one. Many older physicists remember with real pleasure their sense of

Transport and Energy Research: A Behavioral Perspective deals with the transport issues associated with energy from a behavioral perspective in an interdisciplinary and systematic way. Existing transport and energy research has focused on technologies and energy efficiency; however, more efficient technologies do not necessarily lead to energy reduction. Unfortunately, very limited behavioral research can be found in the literature. This book covers major transport modes in major countries. It emphasizes the importance of researching the behaviors of not only transport
