✏Wharton on Managing Emerging Technologies Book Summary : Emerging technologies such as the Internet and biotechnology have the potential to create new industries and transform existing ones. Incumbent firms, despite their superior resources, often lose out to smaller rivals in developing emerging technologies. Why do these incumbents have so much difficulty with disruptive technologies? How can they anticipate and overcome their handicaps? Wharton on Managing Emerging Technologies presents insights, tools, and frameworks from leading busi-ness thinkers based on the research of Wharton's Emerging Technologies Management Research Program. This pioneering industry-academic partnership, established in 1994, is one of the longest and broadest initiatives on the management of emerging technologies. For the first time, this book distills the insights from the program into a single volume for managers, covering a wide range of issues related to the successful management of emerging technologies. The editors contend that managing emerging technologies represents a "different game," requiring a different set of management skills, frameworks, and strategies than those used by established firms to manage existing technologies. In this book, experts from diverse fields examine key issues such as: Common pitfalls and potential solutions for incumbent firms in managing emerging technologies Strategies for assessing the potential of new markets and designing technologies to take advantage of market "lumpiness" The need for scenario planning and "disciplined imagination" to develop strategies under uncertainty The limits of patents in protecting gains from technology, and the use of lead time and other strategies The power of innovative financial strategies and the use of real options in making investments Using alliances and new organizational forms Developing a "customized workplace" Wharton on Managing Emerging Technologies represents a powerful survival kit for managers "dropped behind the lines" of these new technologies. The authors provide a comprehensive set of tools and insights that will help you understand the new challenges and develop effective strategies to succeed at this different game. Praise for WHARTON on MANAGING EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES "New technologies are transforming markets, businesses, and society at an ever-increasing rate. We have a critical need for better road maps for managing our way through this new terrain. This book offers critical insights and useful new models for thinking through these challenges." —Professor Thomas Gerrity, Director of the Wharton e-Commerce Forum "Wharton on Managing Emerging Technologies covers the emerging technology landscape-from strategy to finance to human resources-in a way that only a group of top scholars from many disciplines could do. Insightful, accessible, and smart ideas that make for 'must reading' for thoughtful executives in today's turbulent economy. The authors prove, once again, the power of research to yield deep insight into tough business problems." —Kathleen M. Eisenhardt, Professor of Strategy and Organization, Stanford University and coauthor, Competing on the Edge: Strategy As Structured Chaos "Wharton on Managing Emerging Technologies offers valuable insight for large established companies seeking growth in a dynamic market of rapid technological advancement. The entertaining cases and thoughtful analyses help managers create strategies, select options, and organize to successfully manage the interface between imagination and knowledge." —Jerry Karabelas, PhD, CEO, Novartis Pharma AG

✏Managing Water Resources Book Summary : Water resources management is increasingly interdisciplinary and must take into account complex socioeconomic factors and environmental variables. This book describes the 'systems approach' and its application to contemporary water resources management, focusing on three main sets of tools: simulation, optimization and multi-objective analysis. This approach is presented within the context of sustainable planning and development under conditions of uncertainty. The publication introduces system dynamic simulation as a tool for integrated modeling and contains coverage of the use of fuzzy sets for incorporating objective and subjective uncertainties. It combines theory with many practical examples, as well as including programs and exercises on an accompanying CD-ROM. It composes both an advanced text for students of water resources and civil or environmental engineering and a practical guide for professionals.--Publisher's description.

✏Emerging Technologies for Library Management and Services Book Summary : The world today is witnessing a new kind of revolution - the Information Revolution - ushered in by technology. This revolution is far more sweeping than any other revolution in history in its reach and influence, bringing fundamental changes in all aspects of human life. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has a profound impact on all spheres of activities in the libraries. Its impact has been noticed on the way the libraries are to build its collection, its technical activities, its outreach activities, its budgetary strategies, its manpower development, its infrastructural requirement and the most important its library services. With the invention of Information and communication Technology, libraries are now using various types of technologies to aid the services they render. Everyday new technological advances affect the way information is handled in library information centres. The impacts of new technologies are felt by libraries in every aspect. In the process of managing and communication of information, the present day technological advances are playing a vital role. Telecommunication networks are there to handle digital machine readable data and to use micro-waves and communication satellites to transfer such data. ICT advances have made it possible to provide library services and access to information even outside the library. A library without walls or a virtual library is now becoming a reality. The LIS scene is changing fast in the face of new challenges and in response to new demands. The advent of new technologies and their applications to library services is further accelerating the pace of this change. Library professions are experiencing a transition from stand alone libraries to library and information network; from printed publications to digital documents; from ownership of graphic to access to information. Development of internet technology, emergence of web 2.0/3.0 concepts, new and upcoming technologies, equipments and services are some of the major influence in the transformation of the libraries and information centres. Library professionals and users have taken cognizance of this transition and are redefining their roles. The emerging technologies have gripped the entire society under its impact domain. The industrial and service sectors are witnessing multiple changes in operation management. The Knowledge Resource Centres are also being affected by these technologies. The storage, retrieval and library management technologies have solved century old problems. In this publication I have made an effort to touch all possible areas of emerging trends and technologies in libraries and information services.
