✏Echo Book Summary : In 1985 Joseph Pivato edited 'Contrasts: Comparative Essays on Italian-Canadian Writing', a pioneering collection on minority writing in English, French and Italian. The present book builds on Contrasts by focusing on specific questions -- oral roots, women, self-hatred and translation -- and by expanding on the Canadian discourse to include minority writing in Australia and other countries. In her Foreword, Sneja Gunew states: "The final strategy clearly consists of continuing the dialogue with people like Joseph Pivato and thus to be far more nuanced in our research into cultural difference. Like Joseph Pivato, I believe that the study of these writings both focuses on local differences and transcends the opportunism and tunnel vision of nationalist projects by connecting us to the world at large."

✏Advances in Network and Acoustic Echo Cancellation Book Summary : For many decades, hybrid devices have been used to connect 2-wire local circuits and 4-wire long distance circuits in telephone lines. This leads to a weIl known problem, whereby echoes are generated. The delay introduced by telecommunication satellites exacerbated this problem and the need for new methods of echo control soon became obvious. The best solution to date for solving this problem was invented in the 1960s at Bell Labs by Kelly, Logan, and Sondhi, and consists of identifying the echo path generated by the hybrid by means of an adaptive filter, a technique that became known as an echo canceler. The echo canceler allowed full-duplex communication which was not possible with older echo suppression techniques. Later, with the development of hands-free teleconferencing systems, an other echo problem appeared; but this time the echo was due to the coupling between the loudspeaker and microphone. It is not surprising that the same solution was proposed to solve this problem, and most of today's telecon ferencing systems have an acoustic echo canceler. More recently, attention has been given to the very interesting problem of multichannel acoustic echo cancellation, which leads to more exciting applications that take advantage of our binaural auditory system.

✏The Figure of Echo Book Summary : "In this essay on 'what the imagination has made of the phenomenon of echo, ' the author examines certain aspects of the figure of echo in light of their significance for poetry. Looking at echo in its literal, acoustic sense, echo in myth, and echo as literary allusion, Mr. Hollander concludes with a study of the rhetorical status of the figure of echo, and the ancient and newly interesting trope of metalepsis, or transumption, which it appears to embody. Centered on ways by which Milton's poetry echoes, and is echoed by, other texts, The Figure of Echo deals well with Spencer and other Renaissance writers, with romantic poets such as Keats, Shelley, and Wordsworth, and with echoes of their nineteenth-century forebears in such modern poets as Hardy, Eliot, Stevens, Frost, Williams and Hart Crane."--Front dust jacket inside flap.

✏Echo and Narcissus Book Summary : Do women in classical Hollywood cinema ever truly speak for themselves? In Echo and Narcissus, Amy Lawrence examines eight classic films to show how women's speech is repeatedly constructed as a "problem," an affront to male authority. This book expands feminist studies of the representation of women in film, enabling us to see individual films in new ways, and to ask new questions of other films. Using Sadie Thompson (1928), Blackmail (1929), Rain (1932), The Spiral Staircase, Sorry,Wrong Number, Notorious, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Lawrence illustrates how women's voices are positioned within narratives that require their submission to patriarchal roles and how their attempts to speak provoke increasingly severe repression. She also shows how women's natural ability to speak is interrupted, made difficult, or conditioned to a suffocating degree by sound technology itself. Telephones, phonographs, voice-overs, and dubbing are foregrounded, called upon to silence women and to restore the primacy of the image. Unlike the usage of "voice" by feminist and literary critics to discuss broad issues of authorship and point of view, in film studies the physical voice itself is a primary focus. Echo and Narcissus shows how assumptions about the "deficiencies" of women's voices and speech are embedded in sound's history, technology, uses, and marketing. Moreover, the construction of the woman's voice is inserted into the ideologically loaded cinematic and narrative conventions governing the representation of women in Hollywood film.
