The Fifteenth Jerusalem Symposium reflected the high standards of the former international scientific meetings, which convene once a year at the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Jerusalem to discuss a specific topic in the broad area of quantum chemistry and biochemistry. The topic at this year's Jerusalem Symposium was intramo lecular dynamics, a subject of central interest for theoreticians, che mists and biologists. During the last two decades, there has been remarkable pro gress in our understanding of time dependent phenomena. The development and application of the modern techniques of quantum mechanics and sta tistical mechanics to excited-state dynamics and to chemical and biophy sical systems constitutes a fast developing current research area. The main theme of the Symposium was built around a conceptual framework for the elucidation of photophysical and photochemical phenomena in atoms, molecules, van der Waals complexes and clusters, condensed phases, poly mers and biological supermolecules. The interdisciplinary nature of this research field was deliberated by intensive and extensive interactions between scientists from different disciplines and between theory and experiment. This volume provides a record of the invited lectures at the Symposium.

Anyone who has experience with a car, bicycle, motorcycle, or train knows that the dynamic behavior of different types of vehicles and even different vehicles of the same class varies significantly. For example, stability (or instability) is one of the most intriguing and mysterious aspects of vehicle dynamics. Why do some motorcycles sometimes exh

This book offers an introduction to the physics of nonlinear phenomena through two complementary approaches: bifurcation theory and catastrophe theory. Readers will be gradually introduced to the language and formalisms of nonlinear sciences, which constitute the framework to describe complex systems. The difficulty with complex systems is that their evolution cannot be fully predicted because of the interdependence and interactions between their different components. Starting with simple examples and working toward an increasing level of universalization, the work explores diverse

A long-standing unsolved problem in economic theory is how economic equilibria are attained. Price Dynamics in Equilibrium Models: The Search for Equilibrium and the Emergence of Endogenous Fluctuations considers a number of adjustment processes in different economic models and investigates their dynamical behaviour. Two important themes arising in this context are `bounded rationality' and `nonlinear dynamics'. Important sub-themes of the book are the following: how do boundedly rational agents interact with their environment and does this interaction in some sense

The papers in this edited volume aim to provide a better understanding of the dynamics and control of a large class of hybrid dynamical systems that are described by different models in different state space domains. They not only cover important aspects and tools for hybrid systems analysis and control, but also a number of experimental realizations. Special attention is given to synchronization a universal phenomenon in nonlinear science that gained tremendous significance since its discovery by Huygens in the 17

Civil wars are the dominant form of violence in the contemporary international system, yet they are anything but local affairs. This book explores the border-crossing features of such wars by bringing together insights from international relations theory, sociology, and transnational politics with a rich comparative-quantitative literature. It highlights the causal mechanisms - framing, resource mobilization, socialization, among others - that link the international and transnational to the local, emphasizing the methods required to measure them. Contributors examine specific mechanisms leading

Even though time-dependent spectroscopic techniques continue to push the frontier of chemical physics, they receive scant mention in most references. This text bridges the knowledge gap between quantum chemistry and the modern field of chemical dynamics. It provides needed background in quantum mechanics and then discusses theory and a number of applications that are of current interest, from molecular electronics to photosynthesis. Written in a pedagogic style, it details needed computational components and sample calculations using Mathematica(R).
