✏Dynamic Response and Failure of Composite Materials and Structures Book Summary : Dynamic Response and Failure of Composite Materials and Structures presents an overview of recent developments in a specialized area of research with original contributions from the authors who have been asked to outline needs for further investigations in their chosen topic area. The result is a presentation of the current state-of-the art in very specialized research areas that cannot be found elsewhere in the literature. For example, Massabò presents a newly developed theory for laminated composite plates that accounts for imperfect bonding between layers with new solutions for problems involving thermal effects. This theory is new and computationally-efficient, and the author describes how it fits in the broader context of composite plate theory. Abrate discusses the design of composite marine propellers and presents a detailed derivation of the equations of motion of a rotating blade, including centrifugal effects and the effects of pre-twisting and other geometric parameters. This book is a major reference resource for academic and industrial researchers and designers working in aerospace, automotives, and the marine engineering industry. Presents recent developments in a research field that has experienced tremendous advances because of improved computational capabilities, new materials, and new testing facilities Includes contributions from leading researchers from Europe and the USA who present the current state-of-the-art, including unique and original research Provides extensive experimental results and numerical solutions Appeals to a broad range of professional researchers working in aerospace, automotive, and marine engineering fields

✏Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures Book Summary : Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

✏Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures Book Summary : This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.

✏Impact Response and Dynamic Failure of Composites and Laminate Materials Book Summary : In many engineering applications of composite and laminate materials, damage and failure can be caused by impact of various types. Low-velocity impact is potentially dangerous because it can produce extensive sub-surface delamination that may not be visible on the surface. High-velocity impact produced by projectiles, shock waves and fragments from exploding ammunition is a highly dynamic event, leading to the penetration or perforation of composites. All impact damage is detrimental to the mechanical and structural performance of composites. Accurate evaluation of the damaged state, and a fundamental understanding of the effect of damage upon the resultant properties are therefore essential for the proper design and application of composite materials. The strain-rate dependence of material behavior, fracture propagation and energy-absorbing capacity are also of paramount importance from both the materials science and structural mechanics perspectives.

✏Impact Behaviour of Fibre reinforced Composite Materials and Structures Book Summary : Much of the early, pioneering work on the properties of composites under impact is still conceptually relevant, yet the results of many such analyses are outdated. The accuracy of these results depend specifically on the materials used (fibre, resin), interface, and method of fabrication. Development of new materials, cost effective design, and analysis and prediction of structural behaviour have all established a need for timely, wide ranging research on impact behaviour. Impact Behaviour of Fibre-Reinforced Composite Materials and Structures brings together - for the first time - state-of-the-art research from the most recent works of leading, international experts. An important new study, this book extensively investigates impact response, damage tolerance, and failure of fibre-reinforced composite materials and structure, from a number of expert viewpoints. This book explores the nature of modern polymer composites based on glass, carbon, aramid, ceramic and polymer fibres in a polymer matrix, and details various ways of analysing the impact process. Impact Behaviour of Fibre-Reinforced Composite Materials and Structures will prove itself a valuable tool for research and development engineers, structural engineers, materials scientists, designers, and students and researchers of related disciplines.

✏Blast Mitigation Strategies in Marine Composite and Sandwich Structures Book Summary : This book primarily focuses on methodologies to enable marine structures to resist high velocity impact loadings. It is based on invited talks presented at the recent India–USA workshop on “Recent Advances in Blast Mitigation Strategies in Civil and Marine Composite Structures” The book comprises content from top researchers from India and the USA and covers various aspects of the topic, including modeling and simulation, design aspects, experimentation and various challenges. These failure modes significantly reduce the structural integrity of the marine structures unless they are designed to resist such harsh loadings. Understanding the mechanics of these structures under harsh loadings is still an open area of research, and the behavior of these structures is not fully understood. The book highlights efforts to reduce the effects of blast loadings on marine composite structures. Intended for researchers/scientists and practicing engineers, the book focuses not only the design and analysis challenges of marine composite structures under such harsh loading conditions, but also provides new design guidelines.

✏Finite Element Analysis of Composite Laminates Book Summary : Composite materials are increasingly used in aerospace, underwater, and automotive structures. To take advantage of the full potential of composite materials, structural analysts and designers must have accurate mathematical models and design methods at their disposal. The objective of this monograph is to present the laminated plate theories and their finite element models to study the deformation, strength and failure of composite structures. Emphasis is placed on engineering aspects, such as the analytical descriptions, effective analysis tools, modeling of physical features, and evaluation of approaches used to formulate and predict the response of composite structures. The first chapter presents an overview of the text. Chapter 2 is devoted to the introduction of the definitions and terminology used in composite materials and structures. Anisotropic constitutive relations and Iaminate plate theories are also reviewed. Finite element models of laminated composite plates are presented in Chapter 3. Numerical evaluation of element coefficient matrices, post-computation of strains and stresses, and sample examples of laminated plates in bending and vibration are discussed. Chapter 4 introduces damage and failure criteria in composite laminates. Finally, Chapter 5 is dedicated to case studies involving various aspects and types of composite structures. Joints, cutouts, woven composites, environmental effects, postbuckling response and failure of composite laminates are discussed by considering specific examples.
