✏Professional Leadership for Social Work Practitioners and Educators Book Summary : Professional leadership is increasingly recognised as being vital to enhancing social work’s reputation and effectiveness. Although professional leadership is one of the nine domains of the professional capability framework in England, sometimes leadership is assumed to be the prerogative of managers rather than the responsibility of all professional social workers. The participation of social workers and social work educators in shaping professional cultures within organisations through practice innovation, practitioner research and workforce development is thus crucial. Drawing on theories that challenge hierarchical concepts of leadership, this book will enable experienced social work practitioners and educators to develop their professional leadership to more expert levels. Throughout the book there are case examples illustrating examples of advanced professional leadership in action, research highlights and exercises utilising self-reflection, action planning, creative writing and imagery to provide practical support to the reader.

✏Transforming Public Leadership for the 21st Century Book Summary : The forces of globalization are shifting our world, including the public sector, away from hierarchy and command and control toward one of collaboration and networks. The way public leadership is thought about and practiced must be, and is being, transformed. This volume in the "Transformational Trends in Governance & Democracy" series explores what the shift looks like and also offers guidance on what it should look like. Specifically, the book focuses on the role of "career leaders" - those in public service - who are agents of change not only in their own organizations, but also in their communities and policy domains. These leaders work in network settings, making connections and collaborating to create public value and advance the common good. Featuring the insights of an authoritative group of contributors, the volume offers a mix of scholarship, from philosophical discussions to conceptual models to empirical studies that, taken together, will help inform the transformation of public leadership that is already underway.

✏Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management Book Summary : Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management As the editors of this volume we are very happy to publish a selection of the papers that were presented at the eighth Conference of Working Group 3.7 of the International Federation for Information Processing which was held in July 2008. The focus of Working Group 3.7 is on ITEM: Information Technology in Educational Management (for more information, please visit our website http://item.wceruw.org/), and the theme of its 2008 conference was on the Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management. Our Working Group started its activities (officially we were not an IFIP Working Group at that time) in 1994 in Israel, so it made sense to look at how ITEM has evolved over the years and to reflect on what its future may be. The conference took place in Darwin (northern Australia) which even during the Australian winter is a very pleasant location for having a conference. The town of Darwin was given its name by the Captain of the Beagle (the ship on which Darwin travelled when he made the investigations on which he based his Theory of Evolution) who came to the area and named the town after the giant of science he admired.

✏Leadership and Motivation Book Summary : What motivates people is an important consideration for captains of industry, commerce and the public sector - in fact anyone who works with other people - since people are central to the success of organizations. Leadership and Motivation explores the subject in depth. Leadership guru John Adair reassesses the theories of Herzberg and Maslow - still the major contributors to our understanding of motivation - in the context of Action-Centred Leadership - the concept pioneered and developed by the author. Central to the book are the Fifty-Fifty Rule and the Eight Key Principles of Motivating Others. With the Fifty-Fifty Rule, Adair states that half of a person's motivation comes from within and half is due to their environment - especially the leadership they encounter there. His Eight Key Principles of Motivating Others are: 1. Be self-motivated; 2. Select people who are also self-motivated; 3. Treat everyone as an individual; 4. Set challenging yet realistic targets; 5. Remember that progress motivates; 6. Create a motivating environment; 7. Provide fair rewards; 8. Give recognition.

✏Managing urban America Book Summary : Urban managers continue to do what they have done for decades: manage conflict, adapt to shifting demographics, balance their own source funds with intergovernmental revenues, respond to federal and state mandates, negotiate with other localities in their same metropolitan area, and deliver goods and services. But managers today are confronted with new challenges in what has become ?fend for yourself? federalism. City executives must do more with less while at the same time figure out ways to harness the power of new technologies and react to a globalized world and economy. It is no wonder then that even great managers can fail at urban administration. To succeed, they understand the nature of community values, the pitfalls of bureaucratic inertia, and the craft of leadership?that is, the politics of urban management.Morgan, England, and Pelissero offer a forward-looking account of this new urban management environment. In a comprehensive update, the authors have reorganized the book?s structure to better fit the challenges facing today?s cities, and make even greater use of systems theory as an analytic framework. Featuring discussions of the New Public Management model, the impacts of globalization, changes in service delivery, urban planning, economic development, and program evaluation, they discuss key productivity enhancements that emphasize results and accountability. The authors then focus on the impact of citizen participation, e-government, the events of 9/11, and intergovernmental relations as examples of significant environmental factors that impinge on the management of modern cities. In addition, every case study in the book is brand new and many include information on ?Connecting to the Internet? and ?Profiles of Urban Practitioners and Scholars.?

✏Defining Counterintelligence CI Security and non governmental actors Book Summary : Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: N/A, Brunel University, course: Intelligence & Security Studies, language: English, abstract: The issue of the mutual boundaries between Counterintelligence (CI) and Security (Sy) activities and responsibilities has been largely engaged on a theoretical level over the last few decades. However, the lack of an accurate and widely agreed distinction has generated a certain confusion about what the actual distribution of the responsibilities of each activity is in daily practice. As a preliminary discussion, this essay will analyse the responsibilities of both CI agents and Sy officers in order to clarify similarities and differences, arguing that the practice of counterintelligence is not simply an extension of the Sy officer’s one, although there are some common duties. Secondly, it will illustrate how these differences apply to different organizations by presenting examples of state (CIA) and non-state (IRA) actors. Finally, it will be argued that the division of responsibilities between CI practitioners and Sy officers lies with the nature of the organization considered, as it appears clearly defined in the state actors, whereas it assumes different forms in the non-state actors.
