✏Deep Run Roots Book Summary : THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WINNER OF AN ASTONISHING FOUR IACP AWARDS, INCLUDING COOKBOOK OF THE YEAR AND THE JULIA CHILD FIRST BOOK AWARD Vivian Howard, star of PBS's A CHEF'S LIFE, celebrates the flavors of North Carolina's coastal plain in more than 200 recipes and stories. This new classic of American country cooking proves that the food of Deep Run, North Carolina--Vivian's home--is as rich as any culinary tradition in the world. Organized by ingredient with dishes suited to every skill level--from beginners to confident cooks--DEEP RUN ROOTS features time-honored simple preparations alongside extraordinary meals from her acclaimed restaurant Chef and the Farmer. Home cooks will find photographs for every single recipe. As much a storybook as it is a cookbook, DEEP RUN ROOTS imparts the true tale of Southern food: rooted in family and tradition, yet calling out to the rest of the world. Ten years ago, Vivian opened Chef and the Farmer and put the nearby town of Kinston on the culinary map. But in a town paralyzed by recession, she couldn't hop on every new culinary trend. Instead, she focused on rural development: If you grew it, she'd buy it. Inundated by local sweet potatoes, blueberries, shrimp, pork, and beans, Vivian learned to cook the way generations of Southerners before her had, relying on resourcefulness, creativity, and the traditional ways of preserving food. DEEP RUN ROOTS is the result of years of effort to discover the riches of Eastern North Carolina. Like The Fannie Farmer Cookbook, The Art of Simple Food, and The Taste of Country Cooking before it, this is landmark work of American food writing. Recipes include: Family favorites like Blueberry BBQ Chicken, Creamed Collard-Stuffed Potatoes, Fried Yams with Five-Spice Maple Bacon Candy, Chicken and Rice, and Country-Style Pork Ribs in Red Curry-Braised Watermelon, Crowd-pleasers like Butterbean Hummus, Tempura-Fried Okra with Ranch Ice Cream, Pimiento Cheese Grits with Salsa and Pork Rinds, Cool Cucumber Crab Dip, and Oyster Pie, Show-stopping desserts like Warm Banana Pudding, Peaches and Cream Cake, Spreadable Cheesecake, and Pecan-Chewy Pie, And 200 more quick breakfasts, weeknight dinners, holiday centerpieces, seasonal preserves, and traditional preparations for all kinds of cooks. --- Interior photographs by Rex Miller. ✏Our Roots Run Deep Book Summary : As the old cliché goes, you can't know where you are going until you know where you have been; knowing ones roots helps you to realize where you fit in life. The retelling of family stories from one person to the next is as old as time. Young and old alike find that discovering one's roots is exciting and personally rewarding. As a family, we share a common bond and kinship. The information shared in this booklet was gathered through oral histories, written records, family Bibles,, state health records, family reunion booklets, and national census data. Sources through interviews with family members tell us that Warren Moore (1841) and his parents Dock Moore and Edy Moore, arrived in the United States as slaves sometime around the midnineteenth century. The family initially lived and worked on the Albritton plantation in Pitt County, North Carolina. Warren Moore married Harriet Langley (1844). Cobby Moore (1878), the main patriarchal focus for this project, was one of Warren and Harriet's eighteen children. The following pages contain “sketches” of the lives of Cobby Moore, his three wives, and each one of Cobby's eighteen children. These short vignettes describe the general characteristics of each family member and tell the story of a family's place in American society.

✏My Roots Run Deep Book Summary : One is too many and a thousand is not enough. Anyone who is a drug user knows what this statement means. This book is written to help those who have either hit their bottom and realize there is no way but up and are sick and tired of being sick and tired, not to mention broke busted and disgusted with themselves, and also for the parents and loved ones of people who are caught in the muck and mire of the disease of addiction to understand that addiction is a sickness and that it is curable by understanding, love and patience. Remember, addiction does not happen all of a sudden, and it cannot be cured all of a sudden. Ultimately, the choice is yours as to whether you want to grab hold of the few words that I write and use them to your advantage or let them fly, like the wind never to be thought of anymore. I pray fervently for those who want the redeeming life that I have found in my higher power who returned me to sanity because of my submission to Him and His Grace. His name is Jesus, for it is only be His Grace that I was saved and am able to write this message for you, you, and you.

✏The Roots of Texas Music Book Summary : The music of Texas and the American Southwest is as diverse and distinctive as the many different groups who have lived in the region over the past several centuries,” writes Gary Hartman in his introduction to this refreshingly different look at various genres of Texas music. Roots of Texas Music celebrates the diverse sources of the music of the Lone Star State by gathering chapters by specialists on each of them—specialists whose views may not have dominated the perception of Texas music to date. Editor Lawrence Clayton conceived this project as one that would not simply repeat the common wisdom about Texas music traditions, but rather would offer new perspectives. He therefore called on contributors whose work had been well-grounded but not necessarily widely published. The result is a lively, captivating, and original look at the musical traditions of Texas Germans and Czechs, black Creoles and Chicanos, and blues and gospel singers. Hartman’s introduction places these repertoires within the larger picture of one of the most fertile musical seedbeds the nation knows. The diverse genres included in the anthology also provide an introduction to the classes, cultures, races, and ethnic groups of Texas and highlight the ways in which the state’s musical wealth has influenced the listening habits of the nation.

✏Deep Roots Book Summary : Deep Roots: The African/Black Contribution To Christianity examines the contributions of African/Black people to the formation of Christianity. Through a thorough and exhaustive study, Deep Roots details those who possessed African/Black ancestry in the Bible and in the early church as well as taking a look at the spread of Christianity through Africa. Deep Roots looks at the contribution of the early black church and how it helped to shape Christianity today. Review questions are provided at the end of each chapter in an effort for this book to be used for personal study or group study. "In a fresh and skillful manner Deep Roots portrays African/Black religious history from Biblical times to the present. In a clear, decisive and historical manner Michael Burton refutes the myths that "Christianity is the White Man's religion: as well as rebuking the supposed "curse of Ham." Michael Burton, in an easy to read manner, documents parts of history that have not been emphasized, such as the African early church fathers, the three African Popes as well as the development of the major Black denominations in America, from their historical, sociological and political roots to their present maturity. Deep Roots is a valuable book for scholars, ministers, seminarians, Sunday School teachers and students interested in the development, growth and contribution of black religion in America." ✏Columbus Beer Recent Brewing and Deep Roots Book Summary : Brewing in Columbus began more than two centuries ago. The taps were only turned off during Prohibition and the short pause that preceded the modern craft beer explosion. For generations, names such as Hoster, Born, Schlee and Wagner secured staunch local loyalty for their brands and earned national acclaim for their brewmasters. Today, more than thirty craft breweries ply a prosperous trade in the capital city. After huge California craft brewery Stone became serious about Columbus for its East Coast expansion, Scotland's successful BrewDog chose central Ohio for its U.S. beachhead. Author Curtis Schieber celebrates the rise, fall and triumphant return of brewing in Ohio's capital.
