✏Incorporation of Connected and Automated Vehicles CAV in Travel Demand Modeling Focusing on Traffic Forecasting Book Summary : Traffic forecasting is always a challenge and the intensity of this challenge is higher when the job is to do traffic forecasts considering connected and automated vehicles (CAV). The travel demand model (TDM) is an important and incomparable tool to do traffic forecasts for transportation projects and scenarios for transportation plans. Different agencies not limited to the State Department of Transportation (DOT)s, and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)s need to develop plans, such as the long-range transportation plan and short-range transportation plan. These plans range from 4-6 years (short) to 20-30 years (long). Various researches and studies are going on considering the CAV for traffic operations, policy, and so on. Specific studies have not been conducted to provide guidelines for planning agencies to consider the CAV for transportation planning focusing on the TDM to do traffic forecasts. This research work has proposed strategies to incorporate CAV in the TDM to do traffic forecasts. This study has proposed an improvised TDM methodology considering the consequences of the emergence of CAV in the transportation system from the planning perspective. The proposed method is based on the most traditional four-step trip based TDM and to incorporate adjustments of different supply level independent variables which will guide to develop different scenarios based on the need for planning agencies and stakeholders. This research has proposed formula to estimate trip production and vehicle ownership from the intuitive reaction of CAV emergence in the near future. Multiple scenario results from this research conclude that vehicle miles travel (VMT), vehicle hours travel (VHT), and travel delay due to CAV implementation are directly related to travel behaviors such as auto occupancy and vehicle ownership. VMT, VHT, and travel delay do not always go up with the dedicated lane (DL) for CAV implementation. This research has analyzed different scenarios considering changes in single occupancy (SO) and vehicle ownership (VO) with the DLs for CAV. This research result shows that the DLs implementation for CAV with the current (according to NHTS 2017) SO and VO rate may increase VMT. Notwithstanding, case study results from this research show that 'with CAV' considering reduced SO and VO; and DL implementation, VMT may decrease up to forty percent than 'without CAV'. The transportation mobility may be challenging and chaotic if only the DLs for CAV is implemented without considering travel behaviors. Results from case studies in this research suggest implementing single DL for CAV at the beginning of implementation. Another recommendation of this research is to consider and analyze SO and VO as travel behaviors with the DLs for CAV implementation to do traffic forecasts in a transportation plan or a specific project.

✏Simulation of the Impact of Connected and Automated Vehicles at a Signalized Intersection Book Summary : Intersections are locations with higher likelihood of crash occurences and sources of traffic congestion as they act as bottlenecks compared with other parts of the roadway networks. Consequently, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) can help to improve the efficiency of the roadways by reducing traffic congestion and traffic delays. Since CAVs are expected to take control from drivers (human control) in making many important decisions, thus they are expected to minimize driver (human) errors in driving tasks. Therefore, CAVs potential benefits of eliminating driver error include an increase in safety (crash reduction), smooth vehicle flow to reduce emissions, and reduce congestion in all roadway networks. Since CAV implementations are currently in early stages, researchers have found that the use of traffic modeling and simulation can assist decision makers by quantifying the impact of increasing levels of CAVs, helping to identify the effect this will have on future transportation facilities. The main objective of the current study was to simulate the potential impacts CAVs may have on traffic flow and delay at a typical urban signalized intersection. Essentially, to use a microscopic traffic simulation software to test future CAV technology within a virtual environment, by testing different levels of CAVs with their associated behaviors across several scenarios simulated. This study tested and simulated the impact of CAVs compared with conventional vehicles at a signalized intersection. Specifically, I analyzed and compared the operations of the signalized intersection when there are only conventional vehicles, conventional vehicles mixed with CAVs, and when there are only CAVs. The most current PTV Vissim 11 software was used for simulating different percentages of three different types of CAVs and conventional vehicles in the traffic stream at the intersection. These are three different levels of automated vehicles that are already installed in PTV Vissim 11, which are AV cautious, AV normal, and AV all-knowing. All these automated vehicles were tested in different scenarios in this study. Real data from an existing signalized intersection in the city of Dayton, Ohio were used in the PTV Vissim software simulation. The traffic count data used in the Vissim intersection model were for morning peak hour. The existing signal timing data for the intersection used were first optimized using Synchro. The results from Vissim simulation show that CAVs could reduce the queue delay by about 12%, the stopped delay by about 17%, the vehicle travel time by about 17%, and the queue length by about 22%. Because of that, CAVs can substantially reduce congestion at urban signalized intersections.

✏Traffic Flow Control for Connected and Automated Vehicles Using Spring Mass Damper System Book Summary : This study presents a strategy for platoon formation and evolution of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) for all traffic condition (stable and unstable traffic) and various vehicle composition based on a Spring-Mass-Damper (SMD) system. First, this study presents a strategy for platoon formation and evolution of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) in free-flow traffic. CAV platoon formation and evolution are controlled by the spring constant and damping coefficient of the SMD system. Valid domains of these control parameters are derived based on physical vehicle properties (e.g., bounded acceleration/deceleration) for realistic control. The result suggests that the most efficient platooning can be achieved by the maximum relationship (where the spring constant is set at its maximum for given flow) between the spring constant and flow with critical-damping. However, the cubic relationship, coupled with over-damping, is more desirable in low flow states to allow more freedom for vehicles to cut in and out. Second, this study proposes the control method that aims to improve the platoon efficiency and stability after a cut-in movement (e.g., lane change and merging from on-ramp). The method seeks to resolve a disturbance created by a cut-in vehicle by systematically setting spring constant and damping coefficient based on the prevailing traffic condition. The control method is evaluated through simulation based on the changes of speed and spacing, recovery time to reach the desired speed, disturbance propagation, and platoon flow. The simulation result shows that the control method can effectively reduce the disturbance caused by a cut-in movement and improve platoon flow. Lastly, heterogeneous CAVs and mixed traffic of CAVs and manual vehicle are dealt as a way of extending this study. In case of the heterogeneous CAVs, based on their capabilities such as maximum acceleration and the desired time gap, the optimal order of CAVs that shown the best efficiency is found. For the mixed traffic, due to the different characteristics of CAVs and manual vehicles, the impact of CAVs on the manual vehicle occurs. Thus, this study proposes the range of the spring constant and damping coefficient to absorb the impact.

Congestion in transportation occurs when demand for commuting resources exceeds their capacity and with the increasing use of road vehicles, congestion and thereby emissions will continue to rise if proper actions are not taken. Adoption of intelligent transportation systems like autonomous vehicle technology can help in increasing the efficiency of transportation in terms of time, fuel and carbon footprint. This research proposes a System Level Eco-Driving (SLED) algorithm and compares the results, produced by performing microscopic simulations, with conventional driving and the coordination heuristic (COORD) algorithm. The SLED algorithm is designed based on shortcomings and observations of the COORD algorithm to improve the traffic network efficiency. In the SLED strategy, a trailing autonomous vehicle would only request coordination if it is within a set distance from the preceding autonomous vehicle and coordination requests will be evaluated based on their estimated system level emissions impact. Additionally, the human-driven vehicles will not be allowed to change lanes. Average CO2 emissions per vehicle for SLED showed improvements ranging from 0% to 5% compared to COORD. Additionally, the threshold limit to surpass the conventional driving behavior CO2 emissions at 900 vehicles per hour density reduced to 30% using SLED as compared to 40% using the COORD algorithm. Average wait time per vehicle for the SLED algorithm at 1200 vehicles per hour density increased by one to six seconds as compared to the COORD strategy although reduced up to thirty seconds of wait time compared to the conventional driving behavior. This finding can be helpful for policy makers to switch the algorithms based on the requirement i.e. opt for the SLED algorithm if reducing emissions has a higher priority compared to wait and travel time while opt for the COORD algorithm if reducing wait and travel time has a higher priority compared to emissions."--Abstract.

✏Providing Traffic Control Device Information in a Connected and Automated Vehicle Environment Book Summary : Traffic control devices (TCDs) play a critical role in delivering regulatory, warning, informational, and guidance information to drivers. Transportation agencies devote considerable resources to support TCD installation and maintenance. However, as connected vehicles develop and vehicle automation becomes a reality, the potential exists to replace or augment TCDs with a digital connection. This project investigated the development of a digital TCD (DTCD) data service, focusing on signs and pavement markings. To do so, the research team investigated emerging wireless communications capabilities, identified infrastructure information needs of automated vehicles, reviewed Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) current TCD practices, and surveyed existing data service systems. The results of the study led to the following conclusions: Automated and connected vehicles will be most directly served with a comprehensive DTCD data service as opposed to deriving information from physical devices. A portion of the data needed to populate a DTCD data service exists in VDOT database systems. There is a need for a national standard for DTCD data services. VDOT should conduct a prototype study to gain experience developing and operating a DTCD data service.

✏DATA DRIVEN OPTIMIZATION BASED TRANSPORTATION MODELS FOR CONNECTED AND AUTOMATED VEHICLES Book Summary : Abstract : This dissertation proposes a data-driven optimization-based framework to model traffic dynamics under uncertainty including travel demand, transportation network (i.e. route choice), and connected and automated driving dynamics (on freeways and arterials) using connected vehicle data though Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) communications. To model travel demand dynamics, this dissertation proposes Distributionally Robust Stochastic Optimization (DRSO) using V2N data. A challenge of modeling travel demand dynamics directly using the real-world V2N data is the incomplete and inaccurate trajectory records from the raw data due to technical and privacy issues. Through the proposed DRSO models, this dissertation offline reconstructs the missing choices of activity locations, durations, and paths using the partially observed trajectories from a real-world connected vehicle dataset. This dataset contains around 2,800 connected vehicles over two separate months in Southeast Michigan from the Safety Pilot Model Deployment (SPMD) project. For modeling route choice dynamics, this dissertation develops a Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) based DRSO model for the route choice problem under the impacts of travel time uncertainties and travelers' risk attitudes using vehicle trajectory data from the SPMD dataset. The proposed CVaR-DRSO model offline estimates route choices under uncertainties by using a data-driven uncertainty set. For modeling connected and automated driving, this dissertation develops DRSO-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) models with Distributionally Robust Chance Constraints (DRCC). For the connected and automated driving on freeways (i.e. uninterrupted flow facilities), a DRSO-DRCC based MPC model is proposed to improve the stability, robustness, and safety for the online longitudinal cooperative automated driving of a platoon of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) under uncertain traffic conditions by using real-time V2V data. For the energy efficient connected and automated driving on arterials (i.e. interrupted flow facilities), a DRSO-DRCC based MPC model is developed to improve the safety, energy, efficiency, driving comfort, and robustness of the automated driving on signalized arterials under traffic uncertainties by using real-time V2I and V2V data. ✏Drivers of driverless Vehicles Book Summary : This study was performed with the intent of investigating two primary aspects of human factors in connected and automated vehicles (CV/AVs), specifically drivers’ physical interactions with CV applications, AV driving, and an AV failure as well as drivers’ perceptions of CV/AV technologies. Drivers’ interactions with CV applications (Dynamic Speed Harmonization and Emergency Electronic Brake Lights) and a highly-AV during normal driving and failure were quantified using data obtained from driving simulator scenarios taking place in a rural freeway environment. Drivers’ perceptions of CV/AV were ascertained through survey responses from an Ohio University case study, which led to the development of relationships describing drivers’ opinions based upon their socioeconomic/demographic characteristics and driving tendencies. Following a series of statistical analyses, a multitude of insights into drivers’ reactions and perceptions were obtained. These insights are enumerated throughout this dissertation, from which the following general conclusions and suggestions have been derived. First, drivers’ behaviors seem to be positively impacted by the CV applications, but negatively impacted by a 10-minute period of AV driving. The CV applications were observed to improve drivers’ speed compliance and reduce collision risk; however, AV driving appeared to induce fatigue and distraction among drivers. Not only did AV driving significantly impact drivers’ velocity, acceleration, gaze, and fatigue, but this relatively brief period of AV driving even degraded drivers’ ability to maintain stable control of the vehicle, with velocity, acceleration, steering, and lane position becoming more erratic. Second, drivers’ reactions to a sudden, total disengagement of the AV system, indicated that drivers require an average of 12.30 sec (29.26 sec for 90th percentile) perception-reaction time (PRT) to the first reaction, which was steering. However, even after this initial PRT, drivers still needed an additional 6 sec (11.6 sec for 90th percentile) to regain longitudinal control, bringing the time to full control (TFC) to 18.26 sec (40.86 sec for 90th percentile)
