✏Classical Hindu Mythology Book Summary : The Mahapuranas embody the received tradition of Hindu mythology. This anthology contains fresh translations of these myths, only a few of which have ever been available in English before, thus providing a rich new portion of Hindu mythology. The book is organized into six chapters. "Origins" contains myths relating to creation, time, and space. "Seers, Kings and Supernaturals" relates tales of rivers, trees, animals, demons, and men, particularly heroes and sages. Myths about the chief gods are dealt with in three separate chapters: "Krsna," "Visnu," and "Siva." The chapter "The Goddess" presents stories of the wives and lovers of the gods, as well as of Kali, the savage battle goddess. In their introductions, the editors provide a historical setting in which to discuss Hindu mythology as well as a full analysis of its basic sources. The many names given the gods and goddesses in the Sanskrit texts have been retained since their multiplicity is an essential part of the richness of the original. The editors have provided a thorough glossary to make these names accessible.

✏A Dictionary of Non Classical Mythology Book Summary : Old Teutonic ideas concerning the dead were not very defined. Souls were conceived as in the air, sweeping past on the winds; they formed the phantom host accompanying the wild huntsmen of popular tradition. Or they might be dwelling in the hills, perhaps feasting there with Odhin, before Valhalla was known... -from then entry for Hel, the early Scandinavian abode of the dead From "Aah" (an Egyptian moon god) to "Ziudsuddu" (the Sumerian hero of the Creation), this is a deliciously browsable dictionary of the folklore of Europe, the ancient Americas, and the Near and Far East. Originally published in 1912 and weaving connections between the deities and legendary heroes of diverse traditions-are Krishna and Arthur spiritual brothers?-this will delight readers of mythology and comparative religion. Scottish occultist LEWIS SPENCE (1874-1955) was a fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, and vice president of the Scottish Anthropological and Folklore Society. A renowned scholar of the Atlantis myth, he authored numerous books of mythology, folklore, and the occult, including The History of Atlantis (1926), The Occult Causes of the Present War (1940), and The Magic Arts in Celtic Britain (1945). MARIAN EDWARDES also wrote A Pocket Lexicon & Concordance to the Temple Shakespeare and translated (with Edgar Taylor) Fairy Tales, by the Brothers Grimm.

✏Hindu Goddesses Book Summary : Hindu Goddesses is a valuable sourcebook and reference work for students and scholars of Hindu goddesses and of Hinduism in general. Each goddess is dealt with as an independent deity with a coherent mythology, theology and, in some cases, cult of her own. Within the complex, diverse, and rich goddess traditions of Hinduism, one can find suggestions of nearly every important theme in the Hindu religion. In many ways, this book is as much a study of the Hindu tradition itself as it is a study of one aspect of that tradition. No other living religious tradition has displayed such an ancient, continuous, and diverse history of goddess worship.
