✏Separations for Biotechnology 2 Book Summary : The challenge of bioseparations is to isolate and purify identified products from the dilute product broth produced from cell culture. Innovation in bioseparations technology is increasingly driven by the requirements imposed by the growing importance of production on a process scale of injectable-grade products, and economic pressures to improve the efficiency of downstream processing. As in other areas of technical change, science does not necessarily precede new technology: progress results from a complex and messy mixture of advances in understanding, ingenious ideas, novel techniques and chance discoveries. What is certain is that close interaction between academics and practitioners, biological scientists and process engineers is needed to solve the problems of bioseparations. The Second International Conference on Separations for Biotechnology at Reading, UK, in September 1990 set out to provide a critical multidisciplinary forum for the discussion of bioseparations. This volume contains the papers presented at the meeting. The meeting was organised around six themes with oral and poster presentations on the science and practice of bioseparations technology, and the same structure has been kept for this book. We have also included the texts of the keynote review paper by Professor Alan Michaels and the introductory review papers specially commissioned for the conference. Within each part of this book the review paper is followed by the contributed papers grouped alphabetically by their first author. All the original papers published here were accepted for publication after scientific refereeing.

✏Bioseparations Science and Engineering Book Summary : Designed for undergraduates, graduate students, and industry practitioners, Bioseparations Science and Engineering fills a critical need in the field of bioseparations. Current, comprehensive, and concise, it covers bioseparations unit operations in unprecedented depth. In each of the chapters, the authors use a consistent method of explaining unit operations, starting with a qualitative description noting the significance and general application of the unit operation. They then illustrate the scientific application of the operation, develop the required mathematical theory, and finally, describe the applications of the theory in engineering practice, with an emphasis on design and scaleup. Unique to this text is a chapter dedicated to bioseparations process design and economics, in which a process simular, SuperPro Designer® is used to analyze and evaluate the production of three important biological products. New to this second edition are updated discussions of moment analysis, computer simulation, membrane chromatography, and evaporation, among others, as well as revised problem sets. Unique features include basic information about bioproducts and engineering analysis and a chapter with bioseparations laboratory exercises. Bioseparations Science and Engineering is ideal for students and professionals working in or studying bioseparations, and is the premier text in the field.

✏Food Biotechnology 1 Book Summary : Biotechnology in its many guises has developed very considerably over the last few years. We now feel that it is appropriate for the publication of a series of books that discuss the technical aspects of biotechnology specifically as applied to foods, and in particular concentrating on new and emerging techniques, processes and products. Food is without doubt one of the oldest bioindustries; however, some of the new areas of biotechnology, such as diagnostic and health-care applications, are likely to mature much faster than applications in the food industry. Eventually, however, biotechnology must have a very great impact on a wide scale in the food industry, simply because of the size and diversity of the industry, and because most food products are substantially natural in origin and are therefore very suitable for processing by biocatalysts. Some of the ways in which the food industry is likely to be affected by developments in biotechnology include the following: The modification of food components to give products with new and/or improved properties, for instance high fructose corn syrups, and by modifying the functional properties of proteins. New methods of assaying food constituents, such as immobilized enzyme sensors. New processes for the production of foods and food components, for instance the use of plant cell cultures for the production of flavours. Many of these topics will be described in detail in this series of books.

✏Fundamentals of Food Biotechnology Book Summary : Food biotechnology is the application of modern biotechnologicaltechniques to the manufacture and processing of food, for examplethrough fermentation of food (which is the oldest biotechnologicalprocess) and food additives, as well as plant and animal cellcultures. New developments in fermentation and enzyme technologicalprocesses, molecular thermodynamics, genetic engineering, proteinengineering, metabolic engineering, bioengineering, and processesinvolving monoclonal antibodies, nanobiotechnology and quorumsensing have introduced exciting new dimensions to foodbiotechnology, a burgeoning field that transcends many scientificdisciplines. Fundamentals of Food Biotechnology, 2nd edition is basedon the author’s 25 years of experience teaching on a foodbiotechnology course at McGill University in Canada. The book willappeal to professional food scientists as well as graduate andadvanced undergraduate students by addressing the latest excitingfood biotechnology research in areas such as genetically modifiedfoods (GMOs), bioenergy, bioplastics, functionalfoods/nutraceuticals, nanobiotechnology, quorum sensing andquenching. In addition, cloning techniques for bacterial and yeastenzymes are included in a “New Trends and Tools”section and selected references, questions and answers appear atthe end of each chapter. This new edition has been comprehensively rewritten andrestructured to reflect the new technologies, products and trendsthat have emerged since the original book. Many new aspectshighlight the short and longer term commercial potential of foodbiotechnology.
