✏Performing Arts Center Management Book Summary : Performing arts centers (PACs) are an integral part of the cultural and creative industries, significantly influencing the cultural, social, and economic vitality of communities around the world. Virtually all PACs are community-based and serve the public interest, whether structured as a public, nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid entity. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the important community role of performing arts centers, especially those that mainly host and present work produced by other arts organizations. This gap is startling, given the ubiquitous presence of PACs in urban centers, small communities, as well as colleges and universities. This co-edited reference book provides valuable information at the intersection of theory and practice in the professional field of executive leadership of performing arts centers. Drawing on the expertise of leading academics, consultants, and executives, this book focuses on institutions and practices in the United States, and is contextualized within additional fields such as cultural planning, urban revitalization, and economic development. Performing Arts Center Management aims to provide valuable theoretical, conceptual, empirical, and practice-based information to current and future leaders in creative and cultural industries management. It serves as a unique reference for researchers, university students, civic leaders, urban planners, public venue managers, and arts administrators aspiring to improve or advance their work in successfully managing performing arts centers.

✏Library Builders Book Summary : Libraries are at a cusp: poised uneasily between the legacy of Gutenberg and the byte of the digital age - Michael Brawne The historical perception of the library is being undermined by the digital revolution. Some critics say that, in the current information age, the traditional repositories are becoming obsolete mausoleums for books. The contemporary library now has to provide a multitude of services, often at the heart of a community, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to ever-increasing technological demands. Library Builders presents over forty contemporary libraries, ranging in scale from the grandeur of national libraries to small, intimate community libraries, from public libraries to university libraries, which feature the different qualities of both the traditional biblioth?que and the futuristic mediath?que. It examines the potential future of this building type in the twenty-first century, with ever-changing demands for supply and dissemination of information. The wider issues of current library design are addressed in a selection of essays by prominent library builders and critics: Michael Brawne, John Olley, Paul Lukez, Michael Spens, Richard MacCormac and Merrill Elam. Among the many library types presented here are the national: Dominique Perrault's Biblioth?que Nationale de France and Colin St John Wilson's British Library; the city: Richard Meier's City Library in The Hague, Bolles-Wilson's M?nster City Library, Mecanoo's Almelo Public Library; and the academic: Sir Norman Foster and Partners' Squire Law Library, Cambridge and Hodgetts + Fung's unorthodox Towell Library at UCLA. Other prominent architects featured include: Jos? Ignacio Linazasoro, Moore Ruble Yudell, Antoine Predock, Aldo Rossi, Moshe Safdie, Schwartz/Silver, Scogin Elam and Bray, and James Stirling Michael Wilford & Associates.

✏The Square and the Circle of the Indian Arts Book Summary : The Square and the Circle of the Indian Arts is a major contribution in Indian art history. More than a book on the theories of arts, it has far-reaching implications for the way one thinks about the future of indology and art history. It provides a model to be emulated for inter-disciplinary research, not only between the arts but also the sciences and the arts. The book begins by re-examining the imagery of the Vedas and the Upanisads, highlighting some aspects of early speculative thought which influenced the enunciation of aesthetic theories, particularly of Bharata in the Natyasastra. The next chapter introduces a new methodology of analyzing the rituals (yajna) as laid down in the Yajurveda and the Satapatha Brahmana, the best way to focus the relationship between the text and the practice. Four chapters follow – one each on drama (natya), architecture (vastu), sculpture (silpa), and music (sangita). Each presents some fundamental concepts of speculative thought, concerned with each of the arts and purposefully correlates these with actual examples both of the past and the present. The afterward to this second edition remains an event not only because the book benefits from the works published since the first edition, but also because it presents the author’s integral vision and her unique adventure into the boundaries of several disciplines. It demonstrates the efficacy of her earlier approach of investigating the imagery and the metaphors as basic to the discourse of the Indian tradition. She proposes a multi-layered cluster of concepts and metaphors which enable one to uncode the complex multi-dimensional character of the Indian Arts. Also significantly she suggests a deeper comprehension of the relevance of the developments in the field of traditional mathematics and biology for the study of the language of form of the Indian Arts.

✏The Appraisal of Investments in Educational Facilities Book Summary : This collection of papers covers, from a European perspective, the basic aspects of investments in physical educational facilities, as well as important issues in the economics of education. Four themes are covered. The first presents the art of the economic analysis of educational projects. The second focuses on the contribution of performance indicators in the evaluation of education systems. The third concerns the management of physical resources for education, especially the relationship between school environment and student achievement. The last theme addresses the design and equipment of physical facilities for education. It argues for investments in building human capital, and provides the tools for assessing the rates of return on these types of investments. Final comments focus on facility flexibility: what it is and which requirements it is supposed to meet. The papers included are: "Building Human Capital in Europe: Issues and Methods" (George Psacharopoulos); "Cost-Benefit Analysis in Education Projects: Internal Rates of Return, Methodologies and Theoretical Objections" (Tom Healy); "Externalities, Non-Market Effects, and Trends in Returns to Educational Investments" (Walter W.
