✏Building Structures Illustrated Book Summary : A new edition of Francis D.K. Ching's illustrated guide tostructural design Structures are an essential element of the building process, yetone of the most difficult concepts for architects to grasp. Whilestructural engineers do the detailed consulting work for a project, architects should have enough knowledge of structural theory andanalysis to design a building. Building StructuresIllustrated takes a new approach to structural design, showinghow structural systems of a building—such as an integratedassembly of elements with pattern, proportions, and scale—arerelated to the fundamental aspects of architectural design. Thebook features a one-stop guide to structural design in practice, athorough treatment of structural design as part of the entirebuilding process, and an overview of the historical development ofarchitectural materails and structure. Illustrated throughout withChing's signature line drawings, this new Second Edition isan ideal guide to structures for designers, builders, andstudents. ✏Structures and Architecture Book Summary : Although the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering have both experienced their own historical development, their interaction has resulted in many fascinating and delightful structures. To take this interaction to a higher level, there is a need to stimulate the inventive and creative design of architectural structures and to persuade architects and structural engineers to further collaborate in this process, exploiting together new concepts, applications and challenges. This set of book of abstracts and full paper searchable CD-ROM presents selected papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Structures and Architecture Conference (ICSA2016), organized by the School of Architecture of the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal (July 2016), to promote the synergy in the collaboration between the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering. The set addresses all major aspects of structures and architecture, including building envelopes, comprehension of complex forms, computer and experimental methods, concrete and masonry structures, educating architects and structural engineers, emerging technologies, glass structures, innovative architectural and structural design, lightweight and membrane structures, special structures, steel and composite structures, the borderline between architecture and structural engineering, the history of the relationship between architects and structural engineers, the tectonics of architectural solutions, the use of new materials, timber structures and more. The contributions on creative and scientific aspects of the conception and construction of structures, on advanced technologies and on complex architectural and structural applications represent a fine blend of scientific, technical and practical novelties in both fields. This set is intended for both researchers and practitioners, including architects, structural and construction engineers, builders and building consultants, constructors, material suppliers and product manufacturers, and other experts and professionals involved in the design and realization of architectural, structural and infrastructural projects.

✏Behaviour and Design of Composite Steel and Concrete Building Structures Book Summary : Composite steel-concrete structures are the dominant structural form in the construction of steel framed buildings. Steel framed buildings represent over half of the world market for multi-storey buildings. They are also one of the most attractive building forms for meeting the new sustainability agendas of governments worldwide. Steel framed structures provide building owners with greater flexibility and there are future moves to enable them to be made demountable. Demountability provides a particular advantage over traditional reinforced and prestressed concrete structures which can prove highly problematic and hazardous when decommissioned. This book highlights the rapid developments in the understanding of the behaviour and design of composite-steel concrete structures, and links them to a range of international standards. It offers an in-depth treatment of the fundamental behaviour and design of composite steel-concrete building structures incorporating beams, columns, joints, slabs and systems. It also addresses the needs created by the increasing internationalisation of consulting engineering practices, as structural engineers have to be adept in design provisions from more than their home nation, by tying the practical applications of the basic methods to Australian, Chinese, European and United States standards.

✏Monitoring Building Structures Book Summary : There is an increasing number of buildings that require informed decisions to be made about their continued safety and serviceability. Although social and economic issues are often all-important influences, the technical issues nevertheless need to be addressed objectively, efficiently and reliably. This book shows how monitoring the physical behaviour of a structure can assist the engineer to meet these conditions when making an assessment. The book is aimed primarily at the practising engineer charged with making recommendations in respect of safety and serviceability. By the same token, it will be of value to the client specifying a brief for assessment or evaluating the report of an investigation which involves monitoring. The book will also be one of reference for those engaged in research involving monitoring, and an aid to the advanced student who needs to understand better the full-scale performance in service of building structures. The need to assess safety and serviceability may arise for a variety of reasons, ranging from problems developing in service to change of use or the introduction of innovative features at the design stage. These reasons are explored in the first chapter which establishes a philosophy by which the assessing engineer can determine appropriate courses of action. Observations and measurements which do not address the real issues are worthless but too much information which cannot be effectively digested and interpreted is also not useful.

✏Seismic Performance of Asymmetric Building Structures Book Summary : Seismic Performance of Asymmetric Building Structures presents detailed investigations on the effective assessment of structural seismic response under excessive torsional vibrations, demonstrating behavioural aspects from local response perspective to global seismic demands. The work provides comprehensive analytical, computational, experimental investigations, and proposes improved design guidelines that structural engineers can utilize to enhance the seismic design of asymmetric building structures. Combining extensive experimental and numerical data stock for seismic performance assessment with a particular focus on asymmetric building structures, the book includes: • An overview of asymmetric building structures from seismic damage perspective • Local and global performance assessment of asymmetric structures under extreme seismic actions • Post-earthquake damage evaluation from varying frequency trends • Extended numerical applications for experimental response validations • Evaluation of critical regions of asymmetric structure with stress concentration • Statistical distribution of seismic response under varying design parameters • Design guidelines for asymmetric building structures This work's comprehensive evaluations are carried out with modern sensing techniques planned with meticulous attention to cover objectives with a particular focus on asymmetry in reinforced concrete and steel structures. It assesses various aspects of asymmetric building structures that are rarely dealt with in the current literature. It gathers fruitful information from various building design codes and explains their limitations in addressing damage-related challenges, which is not only useful for practicing engineers but also for academics. The book will be invaluable for experts, researchers, students and practitioners from relevant areas, as well as for emergency preparedness managers.
