📒Bright Futures Or Broken Dreams ✍ Mary Lee Allen
✏Bright Futures Or Broken Dreams Book Summary : Multiple sources were used to study the status of children in the District of Columbia, and recommendations for the improvement of their living conditions and opportunities are made based on these findings. The health and well-being of children in the U.S. capital lag behind the rest of the nation. One in 3 children in the District of Columbia lives in poverty, a rate 40% higher than the national average. The mortality rate for black infants places the District last among states and last among the nation's largest cities with measurable black infant death rates. More than 25 children a day are reported abused or neglected, and more than 5,000 juveniles were arrested in 1990. Every night, 1,300 children sleep in shelters across the city. Conditions have been worsening, and District officials have failed to use all available federal assistance to meet the needs of children and families. Recommendations for improvement of children's status are made in the areas of: (1) maternal and child health; (2) housing and homelessness; (3) the child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice systems that can help vulnerable children; (4) family income; and (5) city management and budget practices. Suggestions are made for community action to help children, including the establishment of tutoring and mentoring programs. Civic and social, religious, and business organizations can all help, and all citizens must feel an obligation to place children higher on the political agenda. Appendices present information about District officials, volunteer opportunities, organizations that can help the District's children, and a list of 15 selected resources. (SLD)

📒Clear Bright Future ✍ Paul Mason
✏Clear Bright Future Book Summary : A passionate defence of humanity and a work of radical optimism from the international bestselling author of Postcapitalism How do we preserve what makes us human in an age of uncertainty? Are we now just consumers shaped by market forces? A sequence of DNA? A collection of base instincts? Or will we soon be supplanted by algorithms and A.I. anyway? In Clear Bright Future, Paul Mason calls for a radical, impassioned defence of the human being, our universal rights and freedoms and our power to change the world around us. Ranging from economics to Big Data, from neuroscience to the culture wars, he draws from his on-the-ground reporting from mass protests in Istanbul to riots in Washington, as well as his own childhood in an English mining community, to show how the notion of humanity has become eroded as never before. In this book Paul Mason argues that we are still capable - through language, innovation and co-operation - of shaping our future. He offers a vision of humans as more than puppets, customers or cogs in a machine. This work of radical optimism asks: Do you want to be controlled? Or do you want something better?
