✏Blindspot Book Summary : BONUS: This edition contains a Blindspot discussion guide. Stewart Jameson, a Scottish portrait painter fleeing his debtors in Edinburgh, has washed up on the British Empire's far shores—in the city of Boston, lately seized with the spirit of liberty. Eager to begin anew, he advertises for an apprentice, but the lad who comes knocking is no lad at all. Fanny Easton is a fallen woman from Boston's most prominent family who has disguised herself as a boy to become Jameson's defiant and seductive apprentice. Written with wit and exuberance by accomplished historians, Blindspot is an affectionate send-up of the best of eighteenth-century fiction. It celebrates the art of the Enlightenment and the passion of the American Revolution by telling stories of ordinary people caught up in an extraordinary time.

✏Blindspot Book Summary : I know my own mind. I am able to assess others in a fair and accurate way. These self-perceptions are challenged by leading psychologists Mahzarin R. Banaji and Anthony G. Greenwald as they explore the hidden biases we all carry from a lifetime of exposure to cultural attitudes about age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, social class, sexuality, disability status, and nationality. “Blindspot” is the authors’ metaphor for the portion of the mind that houses hidden biases. Writing with simplicity and verve, Banaji and Greenwald question the extent to which our perceptions of social groups—without our awareness or conscious control—shape our likes and dislikes and our judgments about people’s character, abilities, and potential. In Blindspot, the authors reveal hidden biases based on their experience with the Implicit Association Test, a method that has revolutionized the way scientists learn about the human mind and that gives us a glimpse into what lies within the metaphoric blindspot. The title’s “good people” are those of us who strive to align our behavior with our intentions. The aim of Blindspot is to explain the science in plain enough language to help well-intentioned people achieve that alignment. By gaining awareness, we can adapt beliefs and behavior and “outsmart the machine” in our heads so we can be fairer to those around us. Venturing into this book is an invitation to understand our own minds. Brilliant, authoritative, and utterly accessible, Blindspot is a book that will challenge and change readers for years to come. Praise for Blindspot “Conversational . . . easy to read, and best of all, it has the potential, at least, to change the way you think about yourself.”—Leonard Mlodinow, The New York Review of Books “Accessible and authoritative . . . While we may not have much power to eradicate our own prejudices, we can counteract them. The first step is to turn a hidden bias into a visible one. . . . What if we’re not the magnanimous people we think we are?”—The Washington Post “Banaji and Greenwald deserve a major award for writing such a lively and engaging book that conveys an important message: Mental processes that we are not aware of can affect what we think and what we do. Blindspot is one of the most illuminating books ever written on this topic.”—Elizabeth F. Loftus, Ph.D., distinguished professor, University of California, Irvine; past president, Association for Psychological Science; author of Eyewitness Testimony “A wonderfully cogent, socially relevant, and engaging book that helps us think smarter and more humanely. This is psychological science at its best, by two of its shining stars.”—David G. Myers, professor, Hope College, and author of Intuition: Its Powers and Perils “[The authors’] work has revolutionized social psychology, proving that—unconsciously—people are affected by dangerous stereotypes.”—Psychology Today “An accessible and persuasive account of the causes of stereotyping and discrimination . . . Banaji and Greenwald will keep even nonpsychology students engaged with plenty of self-examinations and compelling elucidations of case studies and experiments.”—Publishers Weekly “A stimulating treatment that should help readers deal with irrational biases that they would otherwise consciously reject.”—Kirkus Reviews From the Hardcover edition.

✏Blindspot Book Summary : In this dark and gripping psychological tale, Ophelia, a woman whose identity was fractured into five separate personalities by her father’s satanic rituals, seeks love, justice and unification. The road to hell is paved with gold, an illusion of the setting sun. The month is October. The year is 1946. The road is in Michigan, north of Detroit. The novel opens with the birth of the fourth alternate personality of a tormented child. Identity dissociation is the mind ́s defense against relentless childhood abuse. Multiple Personality Disorder is the extreme result. When the third alter, too frightened to cope, flees into temporary amnesia, the fourth girl emerges. The first sound she hears is a man ́s voice. He calls her Faith but she isn ́t Faith. Faith is the name of the first girl. She is Ophelia, the novel ́s narrator. Her journey through life begins as the unwilling witness to murder. Her father is the murderer. She falls into a state of oblivion, a black hole of the mind. The next time Ophelia opens her eyes she is inside a house filled with art and music and an aura of evil. The idyllic setting, the shores of a small lake north of Detroit, conceals a sinister reality. On these shores and in nearby woods, gods and demons compete for human souls. Good and evil, free will and fate, fidelity and fanaticism, sacred oaths and prophecies determine the outcome. Ophelia ́s mother is an artist. Her father, Max Mahler, is a brilliant, handsome, charismatic physician. He is also the prophet of a satanic cult, its god the master of the moon. He spins a web of myths and lies and fantasies to lure disciples. His daughter is the victim of sadistic rituals performed to appease the demon ́s lust. Fragmentation is her mind ́s defense. The alters survive by sharing the suffering. In this complex novel, nothing is what it first seems to be. Ophelia ́s first days in a hell of her father ́s creation are a jumble of confused activity. Sometimes she observes a red-haired girl who looks like her, an alter. Sometimes she takes her place. The five alters have separate memories, talents and identities. The descriptions of the bizarre rituals are disturbing, graphic and explicit. They leave no doubt that the girl whose identity splinters is smart and brave. Fragmentation is not an act of cowardice. Ophelia soon becomes the dominant personality. At nineteen, she plots her escape with courage and cunning. She leaves, taking her infant daughter with her. Max lets her go. He knows she’ll return on a predetermined date. The story picks up 25 years later. Ophelia is a mother, a teacher of philosophy, and an artist who has found love, but she hasn’t truly escaped. Her father has located her. Lured by the offer of her mother ́s art, she returns, her pagan faith intact. She is the princess in the tower who has to save herself in order to save others. When her father and half-brother snatch her young granddaughter, she stands in their way. Her courage when she faces two armed men grants the unity she both craves and fears, her god’s gift to her. Her father’s vengeful god takes what belongs to him in death and conflagration. Despite dark psychological undertones and pervasive religious satire, the novel is in essence a romance. The hero is noble. The heroine is beautiful, smart, and brave. Blindspot reads like a myth, a disturbing fantasy. The specific cult is fictional, but horrific acts in the name of religion are not. Memory is the key to identity. When identity is fractured, a question arises. Is the woman who survives parental molestation a reliable narrator, or does her road to hell begin with a single act of intolerable violence and end in a nightmare that unfolds in her mind?

✏Blindspot Book Summary : At 2:31 a.m., seismic monitoring stations in China and South Korea detect a magnitude-4 event consistent with a nuclear detonation in the southeastern corner of North Korea, within the Korean Demilitarized Zone. With the threat of full-scale war escalating by the minute, the United Nations Security Council dispatches an elite unit of peacekeepers to cross the border, penetrate the cloud of dust hanging over the site, and determine the exact nature of the seismic disturbance. What they find triggers a series of events that culminates in a civilian biomedical engineer boarding a transport carrier at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, bound for the Far East. His name is Dr. Parker Ramsey and he is uniquely qualified for this mission. He is the brains behind a secret project-Code Name Hindsight-developed under the oversight of the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. Hindsight has never been field-tested, but with global catastrophe looming on the horizon, the only chance of averting it lies in utilizing the project's extraordinary capabilities. If it works, Dr. Ramsey will be able to unravel the mystery behind the detonation and identify the responsible party. For, thanks to Hindsight, Dr. Ramsey will be able to see something that no one has ever seen before... He'll be able to see the moment of death through the eyes of the dead. If he's able to survive long enough to do so. "McBride just keeps getting better " - Hellnotes

✏Blindspot Book Summary : Over the years, incidents have been reported in newspapers and on television news that are simply illogical. Situations such as a vehicle pulling directly into the path of an approaching train, a person stepping in front of a speeding vehicle, and the operator of a vehicle crashing into a stationary objectall seemingly avoidable. How was it possible that the victims did not see, hear, or feel that they were in imminent danger? In Blindspot, I present a hypothesisthese accidents were not accidental but were, in fact, carefully perpetrated, from a distance, by entities tasked with righting a celestial wrong.

✏Blindspot Book Summary : "In the year 5124, the Tengri System is the farthest-flung and most isolated of Earth's six colonies. With the distance from their nearest neighbor measured in centuries, Tengrans have spent more than two thousand years in safe isolation, terraforming the system's hostile planet and engineering soaring orbital habitats to fill the space above it. Until a routine calibration procedure in one of the Space Traffic Control cameras turns up a star where no star should be. Nikolai Ogorodov: Senior-most captain in Tengri's tiny Navy. Nik is facing the grim prospect that he could retire still waiting for something actually exciting to happen, when word comes in that Traffic Control has spotted the deceleration flare of a ship's drive. It's a ship - and a drive - unlike anything Tengri has seen before, and Nikolai is dispatched to determine if the newcomers are a threat to the long-standing peace. Urthe Agajanian: Under-funded and over-caffeinated, Urthe is a young researcher on Orbital Island Peridot. With the Tengri system sporting only the barest, tantalizing remnants of a long-departed alien presence, it's hardly surprising that she is possibly the system's only working xeno-technologist. When a ship turns up with a delegation claiming to be actual aliens, come to trade technology with humanity, Urthe's obscure specialty is suddenly, spectacularly relevant. Urthe and Nik approach the situation from vastly different backgrounds, each holding a different, incomplete picture of the crisis facing their home. Yet they will both find themselves making decisions that could impact the survival not just of Tengri but of humanity"--Back cover.

✏The Blind Spot Book Summary : Beginning in the seventeenth century, the greatest French writers and artists became embroiled in a debate that turned on the priority of painting or sculpture, touch or sight, color or design, ancients or moderns. Jacqueline Lichtenstein guides readers through these historic quarrels, decoding the key terms of the heated discussions and revealing how the players were influenced by the concurrent explosion of scientific discoveries concerning the senses of sight and touch. Drawing on the work of René Descartes, Roger de Piles, Denis Diderot, Charles Baudelaire, and Émile Zola, among others, The Blind Spot lets readers eavesdrop on an energetic and contentious conversation that preoccupied French intellectuals for three hundred years.

✏Blind Spot Book Summary : Neoliberalism has been the defining paradigm in global health since the latter part of the twentieth century. What started as an untested and unproven theory that the creation of unfettered markets would give rise to political democracy led to policies that promoted the belief that private markets were the optimal agents for the distribution of social goods, including health care. A vivid illustration of the infiltration of neoliberal ideology into the design and implementation of development programs, this case study, set in post-Soviet Tajikistan’s remote eastern province of Badakhshan, draws on extensive ethnographic and historical material to examine a "revolving drug fund" program—used by numerous nongovernmental organizations globally to address shortages of high-quality pharmaceuticals in poor communities. Provocative, rigorous, and accessible, Blind Spot offers a cautionary tale about the forces driving decision making in health and development policy today, illustrating how the privatization of health care can have catastrophic outcomes for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

✏Blind Spot Book Summary : In this innovative synthesis of words and images, the award-winning author of Open City and photography critic for The New York Times Magazine combines two of his great passions. “To look is to see only a fraction of what one is looking at. Even in the most vigilant eye, there is a blind spot. What is missing?” When it comes to Teju Cole, the unexpected is not unfamiliar: He’s an acclaimed novelist, an influential essayist, and an internationally exhibited photographer. In Blind Spot, readers follow Cole’s inimitable artistic vision into the visual realm as he continues to refine the voice, eye, and intellectual obsessions that earned him such acclaim for Open City. Here, journey through more than 150 of Cole’s full-color, original photos, each accompanied by his lyrical and evocative prose, forming a multimedia diary of years of near-constant travel: from a park in Berlin to a mountain range in Switzerland, a church exterior in Lagos to a parking lot in Brooklyn; landscapes, beautiful or quotidian, that inspire Cole’s memories, fantasies, and introspections. Ships in Capri remind him of the work of writers from Homer to Edna O’Brien; a hotel room in Wannsee brings back a disturbing dream about a friend’s death; a home in Tivoli evokes a transformative period of semi-blindness, after which “the photography changed. . . . The looking changed.” As exquisitely wrought as the work of Anne Carson or Chris Marker, Blind Spot is a testament to the art of seeing by one of the most powerful and original voices in contemporary literature. Advance praise for Blind Spot “[Teju] Cole’s fiction and essays are incredible, unexpected, and beautiful; he’s also a spectacular photographer. His first collection of photographs, each image accompanied by his stunning prose, promises to show us the world through his eyes, which always seem to see things in a brilliant new light.”—Lisa Lucas, National Book Foundation “Once you get a taste of [Cole’s] writing, you can quickly (and hungrily) burn through what’s available. Thankfully, Blind Spot will indulge the senses by combining both of Cole’s loves in this . . . full-color collection of Cole’s photos, accompanied by his prose.”—The Week “Many artists have felt the lure of juxtaposing photographs and text, but few have succeeded as well as Teju Cole. He approaches this problem with an understanding of the limitations and glories of each medium.”—Stephen Shore, author of Uncommon Places “Memoir meets museum catalog . . . A strange, cerebral, and very beautiful journey.”—Kirkus Reviews “This ambitious study deserves a spot on the shelf next to Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida and Susan Sontag’s On Photography.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) Praise for Teju Cole “The places [Teju Cole] can go, you feel, are just about limitless.”—The New York Times “[Cole is] one of the most vibrant voices in contemporary writing.”—LA Times “There’s almost no subject Cole can't come at from a startling angle.”—The Boston Globe “In following [Cole’s] wanderings, I have often a sense of beholding something more delicate . . . but also more ordinary and more heartbreaking than the eye can typically bear. [His] photographs . . . insist on intimacy, transparency, confrontation.”—Taiye Selasi, author of Ghana Must Go

✏Blind Spot Book Summary : In this revelatory new account, national security expert Timothy Naftali relates the full story of America's decades-long attempt to fight terrorism. On September 11, 2001, a long history of failures and missteps came to a head, with tragic results. But, explains Naftali, it didn't have to be so. Blind Spot traces the long history of American efforts to thwart terrorism, from World War II to the Munich Games hostage-taking to the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. In riveting detail, based on original research and interviews with the key participants, Naftali describes why our early successes in counterterrorism did not translate into success against Osama bin Laden later in the 1990s, and why, until 9/11, the domestic threat of terrorism was the largest blind spot in United States national security.

✏Blind Spot Book Summary : Introducing a heroine unlike any other . . . FBI Agent Bernadette Saint Clare’s gift of sight allows her to see things others can’t. But some things are better left unseen. Not always easy to work with, Agent Bernadette Saint Clare has been assigned and reassigned to FBI offices all over the country. Not long after she’s placed at a desk in the basement of the off-site St. Paul office, she’s called on to do what she does best: use personal effects found at a crime scene to see through a killer’s eyes. In some cases her sight has been astoundingly accurate; in others it has been less than perfect. The agent in charge of this case, Tony Garcia, aware of Bernadette’s spotty record, is unsure if he should follow her lead, and the tension between them makes for an uneasy alliance. To make things more complicated, she becomes involved with her new upstairs neighbor. But there‘s something about him she can’t quite put her finger on—especially when he offers her a key clue to the killer’s identity. A complex novel filled with quirky characters on the right and wrong sides of the law, Blind Spot reminds us that life is filled with leaps of faith both great and small.

✏Blind Spot Book Summary : Today understanding of religion is essential to understanding many major news stories. This book examines how the media frequently miss or misunderstand these stories because they do not take religion seriously, and how they misunderstand religion when they do take it seriously. To the extent that journalists do not grasp events' religious dimensions, both global and local, the authors argue, they are hindered from, and sometimes incapable of, describing what is happening. However, on thenational level the press is one of the most secular institutions in American society - not necessarily contemptuous of serious religion, just uncomprehending. The essays in this book examine nine specific news stories that were inadequately or incorrectly reported by major news sources because their religious dimension was ignored, overlooked, or misrepresented. These stories range from the 2004 U.S. presidential elections to Iran, Iraq, and the papal succession. In each case the authordemonstrates how the story might have been more effectively reported and concludes with specific suggestions for journalist. The authors include both scholars and experienced news analysts. Although it will be of particular interest to people of faith, the book offers all readers an interesting and balanced analysis of the news media's uneasy relationship with religion and religious issues.

✏The Blind Spot Book Summary : In today's unpredictable and chaotic world, we look to science to provide certainty and answers--and often blame it when things go wrong. The Blind Spot reveals why our faith in scientific certainty is a dangerous illusion, and how only by embracing science's inherent ambiguities and paradoxes can we truly appreciate its beauty and harness its potential. Crackling with insights into our most perplexing contemporary dilemmas, from climate change to the global financial meltdown, this book challenges our most sacredly held beliefs about science, technology, and progress. At the same time, it shows how the secret to better science can be found where we least expect it--in the uncertain, the ambiguous, and the inevitably unpredictable. William Byers explains why the subjective element in scientific inquiry is in fact what makes it so dynamic, and deftly balances the need for certainty and rigor in science with the equally important need for creativity, freedom, and downright wonder. Drawing on an array of fascinating examples--from Wall Street's overreliance on algorithms to provide certainty in uncertain markets, to undecidable problems in mathematics and computer science, to Georg Cantor's paradoxical but true assertion about infinity--Byers demonstrates how we can and must learn from the existence of blind spots in our scientific and mathematical understanding. The Blind Spot offers an entirely new way of thinking about science, one that highlights its strengths and limitations, its unrealized promise, and, above all, its unavoidable ambiguity. It also points to a more sophisticated approach to the most intractable problems of our time.

✏Blind Spot Book Summary : In a “wonderfully crafted” supernatural thriller by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Art Forger, a forensic psychologist fights for her child (Robert B. Parker). Blind Spot is a supernatural thriller set in an upscale suburb of Boston. It opens as forensic psychologist Suki Jacobs—a single mother struggling with a big mortgage and an ex-husband in New Zealand—receives a phone call from the police informing her that her seventeen-year-old daughter, Alexa, is at the station, claiming that her ex-boyfriend, Jonah, has been murdered. Upon further investigation, Jonah is found alive, healthy, and playing basketball. But when Jonah is killed in a drive-by shooting the next day, Alexa becomes the prime suspect. Now Suki is plunged into a fight for her daughter’s life as well as a struggle over what is—and isn’t—possible. This story of a mother-daughter relationship caught in the crossfire of modern life, kids with too much knowledge of the world, and adults with too little, is a vision of all that is possible if we are willing to take off our blinders.

✏The Blind Spot Book Summary : An essential collection of literary criticism by one of Spain's most acclaimed authors Javier Cercas is one of the most enjoyable and innovative novelists at work today. Well known among English-language readers as the author of Soldiers of Salamis (winner of the Independent Foreign Fictio Prize), The Anatomy of a Moment and The Impostor, Cercas is also Professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Girona. In 2015, following in the footsteps of George Steiner, Mario Vargas Llosa and Umberto Eco, as Weidenfeld Visiting Professor in Comparative European Literature at St Anne's College, Oxford, Cercas gave a series of five lectures on the novel today, which have since been revised and are now published in English for the first time as The Blind Spot. Starting with Don Quixote and his own experience as a writer, Cercas launches out into a consideration of the most challenging fiction of the last hundred years, from Kafka, Borges, Perec, Calvino and Kundera, to Sebald, Coetzee, Barnes, Foster Wallace and Knausgård. First, he defines and celebrates certain aspects of the novel in the twenty-first century which are also features of Cervantes' masterpiece: its essential irony and ambiguity, its total commitment to innovation, its natural, joyful and omnivorous desire to cram the whole world within its pages, and its intricate concern with fiction and reality. Then he moves on to consider the actual meaning of the novel, the uncertain and discredited role of the writer as intellectual, and the role of the reader in the creation of a form whose aim is to tell the truth by telling lies. The result is a dazzling short book which provides a new interpretation of novel from Cervantes and Melville to the present, and which will be as stimulating for readers and writers of literature in the twenty-first century as E. M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel or Milan Kundera's The Art of the Novel were in the last. Translated from the Spanish by Anne McLean
