✏Sustainability Opportunities and Risks of Future Mobility Systems Based on Autonomous Vehicles in Chinese Cities Book Summary : The autonomous vehicle is predicted to change the paradigm of passenger mobility and dreamful visions have been very present in the media. Promoted by companies and governments, the new technology is said to make mobility safer and more environmentally friendly. But the reports are onesided. There is a limited amount of research on the potential downsides of the autonomous vehicle, particularly at the system level. Also, existing research mostly uses data and examples from the Western world. This qualitative study questions if the autonomous vehicle is truly sustainable. It identifies sustainability risks and opportunities for urban mobility systems in China which result from the implementation of autonomous vehicles. Factors with influence on the future mobility system are identified, analyzed and combined to four distinct emerging mobility systems: Radical ownership-based system, evolutionary ownership-based system, shared mobility system and public transportation system. Through expert interviews, the emerging mobility systems are assessed along twelve sustainability indicators. The results reveal that (1) when it comes to sustainability the future of the autonomous vehicle does not look as bright as the ubiquitous dream promises, (2) the radical ownership-based system, with a high level of autonomy and vehicle ownership rate, produces the biggest sustainability risks while the shared mobility system produces the biggest sustainability opportunities, and (3) both the direction and the magnitude of the sustainability impact strongly depends on the rebound effect which is not yet understood well-enough to design rebound-proof strategies for the future.

BMW, as many other OEMs, is aware of future challenges and disruptive forces and has much more resources to manage the required investments in R&D than smaller start-ups. However, disruptive forces come from lower functionality and low-cost products that are usually overlooked by dominant firms in an industry. This research analyzes the two automotive companies BMW and Tesla by using the common strategy analysis tools. First, the firms’ external environment is analyzed by using the PESTEL analysis, describing relevant trends that affect the strategic decision of the two companies. An industry overview with future projections is provided. Secondly, an internal analysis is performed. SWOT analysis and the VRIO framework form the basis to define the strengths, weaknesses, unique recourses and capabilities of BMW and Tesla. The conclusion provides an overall discussion of the most important findings emerging from the analysis with regard to the business operations and the existing business models of the two car manufacturers. Furthermore, important implications for the adaption and adjustment processes are discussed.

Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to explore these benefits and sacrifices and investigate their importance for consumers’ decision to use autonomous vehicles. For this thesis, a theoretical framework was developed by integrating the decomposed theory of reasoned action with an enhanced version of means-end theory. The framework led to the qualitative examination of benefits and sacrifices that consumers believe exist when using an autonomous vehicle. The relative importance of each benefit and sacrifice for the decision to use an autonomous vehicle in the future was then investigated with a quantitative study. In addition, four consumer segments that differ in their decision drivers and barriers were discovered with a latent class regression. The results of this thesis include several meaningful implications for practitioners and future research. These implications have the potential to guide managerial decision-making in the mobility and related industries and create an opportunity to directly influence the future of mobility by taking action to make the autonomous vehicle succeed in the market.

They offer several potential long-term benefits, including reduction in driving and navigation chores, enhanced mobility for individuals with disabilities, improved safety and decreases in traffic collisions, and reduced infrastructure costs. Currently, however, autonomous vehicle systems in development are still limited by their abilities to detect their surroundings, interpret sensory information, and fully navigate without human input. The human operator needs to both supervise the imperfect system and collaborate with it to navigate the driving environment. The research presented in this dissertation was aimed at better understanding human operator and autonomous vehicle interactions and how they affect system design and implementation. An immersive driving simulator was modified to develop experimental studies that analyzed interactions between the human operator and the autonomous vehicle system. The first part of this research focused on the inherent algorithmic biases present in designing autonomous vehicle systems, and the effects of changes in the system's sensitivity level and autonomy level were analyzed. The results show that a system biased towards lower sensitivity can improve operator vigilance and performance. The results further demonstrate that higher levels of autonomy in vehicles can result in reduced operator performance during potentially fatal events. Subsequent research focused on transitions of control from automation, in which the system hands control of the vehicle over to the human operator because there is a failure in the autonomous driving system. The effect of varying alert frequencies and levels of failure severity on the human operator's ability to successfully navigate a transition was analyzed. Significant differences in operator performance between the presence or lack of an alarm were observed, as well as the fact that an initial system failure's severity level did not seem to affect operator performance in a later failure event. Overall, the results of this work show that engineers and designers of autonomous vehicle systems need to consider a number of scenarios when specifying system actions and responses. This research provides a starting point for further exploration of the implications of system bias, particularly with varying levels of automation. It also provides insights that can help inform the design of transitions of control. A better understanding of human operator and autonomous vehicle interactions remains critical as vehicles with higher levels of automation become more prevalent on the road.

✏The Future of Fully Automated Vehicles Book Summary : Fully automated or autonomous vehicles (AVs) hold great promise for the future of transportation, with Google and other auto manufacturers intending on introducing self-driving cars to the public by 2020. New automation functionalities will produce dramatic transportation system changes, across safety, mobility, travel behavior, and the built environment. This work's results indicate that AVs may save the U.S. economy up to $37.7 billion from safety, mobility and parking improvements at the 10% market penetration level (in terms of system-wide vehicle-miles traveled [VMT]), and up to $447.1 billion with 90% market penetration. With only 10% market share, over 1,000 lives could be saved annually. However, realizing these potential benefits while avoiding pitfalls requires overcoming significant barriers including AV costs, liability, security, privacy, and missing research. Additionally, once fully self-driving vehicles can safely and legally drive unoccupied, a new personal travel transportation mode looks set to arrive. This new mode is the shared automated vehicle (SAV), combining on-demand service features with self-driving capabilities. This work simulates a fleet of SAVs operating within Austin, Texas, first using an idealized grid-based representation, and next using Austin's actual transportation network and travel demand flows. This second model incorporates dynamic ride-sharing (DRS), allowing two or more travelers with similar origins, destinations and departure times to share a ride. Model results indicate that each SAV could replace around 10 conventionally-owned household vehicles while serving over 56,000 person-trips. SAVs' ability to relocate unoccupied between serving one traveler and the next may cause an increase of 7-10% more travel; however, DRS can result in reduced overall VMT, given enough SAV-using travelers willing to ride-share. Furthermore, using DRS results in overall lower wait and service times for travelers, particularly from pooling rides during peak demand. SAVs should produce favorable emissions outcomes, with an estimated 16% less energy use and 48% lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, per person-trip compared to conventional vehicles. Finally, assuming SAVs cost $70,000 each, an SAV fleet in Austin could provide a 19% return on investment, when charging $1 per trip-mile served. In summary, this new paradigm holds much promise that technological advances may soon realized.
