✏Authority Identity and the Social History of the Great War Book Summary : The unprecedented scope and intensity of the First World War has prompted an enormous body of retrospective scholarship. However, efforts to provide a coherent synthesis about the war's impact and significance have remained circumscribed, tending to focus either on the operational outlines of military strategy and tactics or on the cultural legacy of the conflict as transmitted bythe war's most articulate observers. This volume departs from traditional accounts on several scores: by exploring issues barely touched upon in previous works, by deviating from the widespread tendency to treat the experiences of front and homefront isolation, and by employing a thematic treatment that, by considering the construction of authority and identity between 1914 and 1918, illuminates the fundamental question of how individuals, whether in uniform or not, endured the war's intrusion into so many aspects of their public and private lives.

✏Anarchism and Authority Book Summary : Examining the political theory of anarchism from a philosophical and historical perspective, Paul McLaughlin relates anarchism to the fundamental ethical and political problem of authority. The book pays particular attention to the authority of the state and the anarchist rejection of all traditional claims made for the legitimacy of state authority, the author both explaining and defending the central tenets of the anarchist critique of the state. The founding works of anarchist thought, by Godwin, Proudhon and Stirner, are explored and anarchism is examined in its historical context, including the influence of such events as the Enlightenment and the French Revolution on anarchist thought. Finally, the major theoretical developments of anarchism from the late-nineteenth century to the present are summarized and evaluated. This book is both a highly readable account of the development of anarchist thinking and a lucid and well-reasoned defence of the anarchist philosophy.

✏Aquinas as Authority Book Summary : There is no doubt that Thomas Aquinas, together with Augustine, is among the most influential authorities in the history of Western Christian theology. Through the centuries, theologians and philosophers have interpreted Aquinas and (re-)constructed his thought in various ways. As a result of this, a very rich variety of theological and philosophical positions have appeared that claim to be inspired by the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Positions like these are often labelled as a form of 'Thomism'. Although this can be helpful in bringing some order into the history of thought, there is also a deceptive side to it. Any classification runs the risk of obscuring the multiplicity of interests that have inspired the use of Aquinas as authority. On closer investigation many questions arise. What aims did Aquinas' recipients have in mind and how did an appeal to Aquinas function in their attempts to reach these aims? To what extent has their adoption of Aquinas' ideas and approaches been successful or unsuccessful in answering new questions, and in meeting the problems of their times? And, finally, what can we learn from these divergent forms of 'Thomism'? To these questions the Thomas Institute at Utrecht devoted its second conference, which was held from Thursday December 14 to Saturday December 16, 2000. This book collects a selection of the studies that were presented.

✏Rabbinic Authority Book Summary : The Rabbis of the first five centuries of the Common Era loom large in the Jewish tradition. Until the modern period, Jews viewed the Rabbinic traditions as the authoritative contents of their covenant with God, and scholars debated the meanings of these ancient Sages words. Even after the eighteenth century, when varied denominations emerged within Judaism, each with its own approach to the tradition, the literary legacy of the talmudic Sages continued to be consulted. In this book, Michael S. Berger analyzes the notion of Rabbinic authority from a philosophical standpoint. He sets out a typology of theories that can be used to understand the authority of these Sages, showing the coherence of each, its strengths and weaknesses, and what aspects of the Rabbinic enterprise it covers. His careful and thorough analysis reveals that owing to the multifaceted character of the Rabbinic enterprise, no single theory is adequate to fully ground Rabbinic authority as traditionally understood. The final section of the book argues that the notion of Rabbinic authority may indeed have been transformed over time, even as it retained the original name. Drawing on the debates about legal hermeneutics between Ronald Dworkin and Stanley Fish, Berger introduces the idea that Rabbinic authority is not a strict consequence of a preexisting theory, but rather is embedded in a form of life that includes text, interpretation, and practices. Rabbinic authority is shown to be a nuanced concept unique to Judaism, in that it is taken to justify those sorts of activities which in turn actually deepen the authority itself. Students of Judaism and philosophers of religion in general will be intrigued by this philosophical examination of a central issue of Judaism, conducted with unprecedented rigor and refreshing creative insight.

✏Heresy and Authority in Medieval Europe Book Summary : Throughout the Middle Ages and early modern Europe theological uniformity was synonymous with social cohesion in societies that regarded themselves as bound together at their most fundamental levels by a religion. To maintain a belief in opposition to the orthodoxy was to set oneself in opposition not merely to church and state but to a whole culture in all of its manifestations. From the eleventh century to the fifteenth, however, dissenting movements appeared with greater frequency, attracted more followers, acquired philosophical as well as theological dimensions, and occupied more and more the time and the minds of religious and civil authorities. In the perception of dissent and in the steps taken to deal with it lies the history of medieval heresy and the force it exerted on religious, social, and political communities long after the Middle Ages. In this volume, Edward Peters makes available the most compact and wide-ranging collection of source materials in translation on medieval orthodoxy and heterodoxy in social context.

✏An Essay on Divine Authority Book Summary : In the first book wholly concerned with divine authority, Mark C. Murphy explores the extent of God's rule over created rational beings. The author challenges the view--widely supported by theists and nontheists alike--that if God exists, then humans must be bound by an obligation of obedience to this being. He demonstrates that this view, the authority thesis, cannot be sustained by any of the arguments routinely advanced on its behalf, including those drawn from perfect being theology, metaethical theory, normative principles, and even Scripture and tradition. After exposing the inadequacies of the various arguments for the authority thesis, he develops his own solution to the problem of whether, and to what extent, God is authoritative. For Murphy, divine authority is a contingent matter: while created rational beings have decisive reason to subject themselves to the divine rule, they are under divine authority only insofar as they have chosen to allow God's decisions to take the place of their own in their practical reasoning. The author formulates and defends his arguments for this view, and notes its implications for understanding the distinctiveness of Christian ethics. --Robert Merrihew Adams, Yale University

✏By what Authority Book Summary : Authority is exercised in many ways and forms in the Catholic Church today. By What Authority? offers a helpful introduction to the forms of Church authority that are concerned with authentic Christian belief. Gaillardetz explains what it means to say that the Bible is inspired, how Scripture and tradition are related to one another, the role of the Pope and bishops in preserving the Christian faith, the levels of Church teaching authority, how to deal with disagreements with Church teaching, the distinctive role of the theologians, and the contribution of all the baptized in the formation of Church teaching. This book introduces readers to a basic understanding of the nature and exercise of authority in the Catholic Church as understood within the vision of the Church offered by the Second Vatican Council. The chapters conclude by outlining disputed issues regarding the topic of that chapter and a select list of opportunities for further reading. Chapters in Part One: The Authority of Scripture and Tradition are ?What Does It Mean to Say the Bible is Inspired?? ?What Is the Canon of the Bible?? and ?What Is the Relationship Between Scripture and Tradition?? Chapters in Part Two: The Authority of Church Teaching and the Church?s Teaching Office are ?How Do We Understand the Magisterium Today?? ?How Do the Pope and Bishops Exercise Their Teaching Authority?? and ?What Is Dogma and Doctrine?? Chapters in Part Three: The Authority of the Believer and the Believing Community are ?What Is the Sense of the Faithful?? ?Is There a Place for Disagreement in the Catholic Church?? and ?What Is the Proper Relationship Between the Magisterium and Theologians???In straightforward and generally non-technical language, it treats various aspects of authority that pertain to the teachings of the Catholic Church in a clear and helpful way for anyone who desires a deeper understanding of what authoritative teaching entails.? New Theology Review? Will Rogers said, ?We?re all educated, only its about different things.? This sage observation came to mind as I read By What Authority? Many well educated, even professional, Catholics retain a somewhat elementary knowledge of Catholic belief and teaching. This book is a lucid, balanced guide for the interested inquirer on such complex questions as the sense of the faithful, the role of theologians and church authority, and the various levels of church teaching. A great contribution, this book should be widely read.? Most Rev. John R. Quinn Archbishop Emeritus of San Francisco?Gaillardetz has emerged as one of the few true authorities on the authority of the Catholic Church. By some miracle he has managed to balance not only tradition and development, but also first-rate theology with wide accessibility. I will use this as a text in my course on the Church.? Dennis M. Doyle Religious Studies University of Dayton?Richard Gaillardetz has earned a reputation as a leading authority on the theology of the magisterium. Taking his point of departure from Vatican II?s teaching on divine revelation, he shows how revelation is mediated symbolically through the stories and traditions of God?s people. His book guides the reader skillfully through difficult questions such as the nature of biblical inspiration, the gradual emergence of the canon, the relation between Scripture and tradition, the authority of the Church?s teaching office as well as that of the believing community. A chapter asking if there is a place for ?disagreement? in the Catholic Church is particularly wise. Written with an admirable clarity and simplicity, his book is honest, timely, and deeply Catholic.? Thomas P. Rausch, S.J. T. Marie Chilton Professor of Catholic Theology Loyola Marymount University?Gaillardetz sets himself the task of synthesizing and presenting in an accessible manner the theological work on revelation and church teaching authority appearing since Vatican II. He succeeds in a remarkably clear and engaging way.? Pastoral Music? This work is a great resource for those interested in understanding the several sources and practical uses of authority within contemporary Catholicism.? Catholic Books Review?Gaillardetz?s book is written as an honest and charitable presentation of the current teaching of the hierarchical magisterium, with a respectful treatment of the authority of sovereign conscience for each and all believers. . . . This book will whet your appetite to re-read these sacred texts with renewed interest.? America?Writing in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, Gaillardetz focuses on the exercise of authority as it is oriented toward Christian belief; that is, the authoritative relationships concerned with the Bible, tradition, popes and bishops, creeds and doctrine, theologians, and all the faithful.? New Testament Abstracts?Anyone who wants a teachable, balanced, lucid, yet comprehensive text on authority in the church need look no further.? Church?Respected Catholic theologian Richard Gaillardetz takes up important topics that are too often neglected in modern biblical studies and theology. Drawing on the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the full spectrum of Catholic tradition, he provides the lay reader with clear explanations of such issues as revelation, biblical inspiration and inerrancy, the authority of the biblical canon, the relationship of Scripture and tradition, the authority of the magsterium and other levels of Church teaching, the role of dissent, and the sensum fidelium. Just to name this list of contents is to signal the importance of a solid and reliable exposition such as this.? The Bible Today?. . .it treats various aspects of authority that pertain to the teachings of the Catholic Church in a clear and helpful way. I recommend By What Authority? for the audiences intended by the author, as well as for anyone who desires a deeper understanding of what authoritative teaching entails.? New Theology Review

By engaging with literature in international law, international relations and international political economy, the author develops the conceptual and theoretical foundations for analyzing the political significance of international economic law. In doing so, she illustrates the private nature of the interests that this evolving legal order has served over time. The book makes a sustained and comprehensive analysis of transnational merchant law and offers a radical critique of global capitalism.

✏Democratic Authority Book Summary : Democracy is not naturally plausible. Why turn such important matters over to masses of people who have no expertise? Many theories of democracy answer by appealing to the intrinsic value of democratic procedure, leaving aside whether it makes good decisions. In Democratic Authority, David Estlund offers a groundbreaking alternative based on the idea that democratic authority and legitimacy must depend partly on democracy's tendency to make good decisions. Just as with verdicts in jury trials, Estlund argues, the authority and legitimacy of a political decision does not depend on the particular decision being good or correct. But the "epistemic value" of the procedure--the degree to which it can generally be accepted as tending toward a good decision--is nevertheless crucial. Yet if good decisions were all that mattered, one might wonder why those who know best shouldn't simply rule. Estlund's theory--which he calls "epistemic proceduralism"--avoids epistocracy, or the rule of those who know. He argues that while some few people probably do know best, this can be used in political justification only if their expertise is acceptable from all reasonable points of view. If we seek the best epistemic arrangement in this respect, it will be recognizably democratic--with laws and policies actually authorized by the people subject to them.

✏Types of Authority in Formative Christianity and Judaism Book Summary : Bruce Chilton and Jacob Neusner study the points of comparisons and contrast between formative Christianity and Judaism. By identifying three categories of authority in each of the two religious worlds, they show how they have both worked in compelling or failing to get someone to do a given action. The arguments are introduced by a general discussion of the founding figures of the two religions, Moses and Jesus, and how their inherent authority distilled itself through the structure of their religious institutions and intellectual thoughts.
