In principle, a homogeneous surface covered by trifluoromethyl groups would be an ideal low energy surface. However, surface reconstruction in a polar environment can lead to rapid changes in the surface and thus limit the practical application of these materials. We have developed different strategies to create stable low energy surfaces that resist the movement of polar groups to the surface in a polar environment, based on the natural self-assembly of liquid crystalline groups, such as that provided by semifluorinated segments. We explored this subject from three different perspectives.
