These studies range from engineering level models of fuel cell systems and stacks to molecular level, electronic structure calculations on the behavior of membranes and catalysts, and everything in between. This volume explores this range. It is appropriate to ask what, if anything, does this work tell us that we cannot deduce intuitively? Does the emperor have any clothes? ✏Accurate Analytical Model for Determination of Effective Diffusion Coefficient of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells by Designing Compact Loschmidt Cells Book Summary : Graphical abstract: Effective diffusion coefficient is an important parameter which needs to be determined in different fields of study, such as cathode catalyst layers of PEM fuel. For this purpose, a Loschmidt diffusion cell can be used. When a porous medium is placed in Loschmidt apparatus, the effective gas diffusion coefficient (EGDC) of this section must be correlated by diffusion coefficient in absence of a porous medium. In the previous researches studying the Loschmidt diffusion cell, a simplifying infinite-length assumption was used in the analytical solution. Therefore, the solution is only applicable for a short time range, and this can result in high error. In order to overcome this challenge, the length of cell should be quite long. This requirement is not experimentally and economically easy to achieve. In this study, a new analytical solution is proposed by applying Fick's second law and separation of variables technique. This model does not use simplifying assumptions such as infinite length and equivalent diffusivity coefficient. The results of the new analytical solution are verified with the experimental measurements, as well as numerical finite element simulation. In order to analyze the reliability of previous methods, a new characteristic time is defined based on diffusion wave propagation in the system. Finally, a sensitivity analysis on thickness of porous media and EGDC is conducted and it is shown that previous models can predict diffusion coefficient with high deviations. Highlights: An analytical model is presented for study of diffusion in composite systems. The model can be used to design more compact and cheaper Loschmidt cells. Results are well matched with experimental measurements and finite element method. The conventional models can show poor predictions in later times and short cells in comparison with the new proposed model. ✏Mathematical and Computational Modeling of Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells Book Summary : In this thesis a comprehensive review of fuel cell modeling has been given and based on the review, a general mathematical fuel cell model has been developed in order to understand the physical phenomena governing the fuel cell behavior and in order to contribute to the efforts investigating the optimum performance at different operating conditions as well as with different physical parameters. The steady state, isothermal model presented here accounts for the combined effects of mass and species transfer, momentum conservation, electrical current distribution through the gas channels, the electrodes and the membrane, and the electrochemical kinetics of the reactions in the anode and cathode catalyst layers. One of the important features of the model is that it proposes a simpler modified pseudo-homogeneous/agglomerate catalyst layer model which takes the advantage of the simplicity of pseudo-homogenous modeling while taking into account the effects of the agglomerates in the catalyst layer by using experimental geometric parameters published. The computation of the general mathematical model can be accomplished in 3D, 2D and 1D with the proper assumptions. Mainly, there are two computational domains considered in this thesis. The first modeling domain is a 2D Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) model including the modified agglomerate/pseudo-homogeneous catalyst layer modeling with consistent treatment of water transport in the MEA while the second domain presents a 3D model with different flow filed designs: straight, stepped and tapered. COMSOL Multiphysics along with Batteries and Fuel Cell Module have been used for 2D & 3D model computations while ANSYS FLUENT PEMFC Module has been used for only 3D two-phase computation. Both models have been validated with experimental data. With 2D MEA model, the effects of temperature and water content of the membrane as well as the equivalent weight of the membrane on the performance have been addressed. 3D COMSOL simulation results showed that the fuel performance can be improved by using flow field designs alleviating the reactant depletion along the channels and supplying more uniform reactant distribution. Stepped flow field was found to show better performance when compared to straight and tapered ones. ANSYS FLUENT model is evaluated in terms of predicting the two phase flow in the fuel cell components. It is proposed that it is not capable of predicting the entire fuel cell polarization due to the lack of agglomerate catalyst layer modeling and well-established two-phase flow modeling. Along with the comprehensive modeling efforts, also an analytical model has been computed by using MathCAD and it is found that this simpler model is able to predict the performance in a general trend according to the experimental data obtained for a new novel membrane. Therefore, it can be used for robust prediction of the cell performance at different operating conditions such as temperature and pressure, and the electrochemical properties such as the catalyst loading, the exchange current density and the diffusion coefficients of the reactants. In addition to the modeling efforts, this thesis also presents a very comprehensive literature review on the models developed in the literature so far, the modeling efforts in fuel cell sandwich including membrane, catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer and fuel cell model properties. Moreover, a summary of possible directions of research in fuel cell analysis and computational modeling has been presented.

✏Experimental and Modelling Studies of Cold Start Processes in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells Book Summary : Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been considered as one of the most promising energy conversion devices for the future in automotive applications. One of the major technical challenges for the commercialization of PEMFC is the effective start-up from subzero temperatures, often referred to as "cold start". The major problem of PEMFC cold start is that the product water freezes when the temperature inside the PEMFC is lower than the freezing point. If the catalyst layer (CL) is fully occupied by ice before the cell temperature rises above the freezing point, the electrochemical reaction may stop due to the blockage of the reaction sites. However, only a few of the previous PEMFC studies paid attention to cold start. Hence, understanding the ice formation mechanisms and optimizing the design and operational strategies for PEMFC cold start are critically important. In this research, an experimental setup for the cold start testing with simultaneous measurement of current and temperature distributions is designed and built; a one-dimensional (1D) analytical model for quick estimate of purging durations before the cold start process is formulated; and a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) PEMFC cold start model is developed. The unique feature of the cold start experiment is the inclusion of the simultaneous measurement of current and temperature distributions. Since most of the previous numerical models are limited to either 1D or two-dimensional (2D) or 3D but only considering a section of the entire cell due to computational requirement, the measured distribution data are critically important to better understand the PEMFC cold start characteristics. With a full set of conservation equations, the 3D model comprehensively accounts for the various transport phenomena during the cold start processes. The unique feature of this model is the inclusion of: (i) the water freezing in the membrane electrolyte and its effects on the membrane conductivity; (ii) the non-equilibrium mass transfer between the water in the ionomer and the water (vapour, liquid and ice) in the pore region of the CL; and (iii) both the water freezing and melting in the CL and gas diffusion layer (GDL). This model therefore provides the fundamental framework for the future top-down multi-dimensional multiphase modelling of PEMFC. The experimental and numerical results elaborate the ice formation mechanisms and other important transport phenomena during the PEMFC cold start processes. The effects of the various cell designs, operating conditions and external heating methods on the cold start performance are studied. Independent tests are carried out to identify and optimize the important design and operational parameters.
