✏Mad Among Us Book Summary : In the first comprehensive one-volume history of the treatment of the mentally ill, the foremost historian in the field compellingly recounts our various attempts to solve this ever-present dilemma from colonial times to the present. Gerald Grob charts the growth of mental hospitals in response to the escalating numbers of the severely and persistently mentally ill and the deterioration of these hospitals under the pressure of too many patients and too few resources. Mounting criticism of psychiatric techniques such as shock therapies, drugs, and lobotomies and of mental institutions as inhumane places led to a new emphasis on community care and treatment. While some patients benefited from the new community policies, they were ineffective for many mentally ill substance abusers. Grob’s definitive history points the way to new solutions. It is at once an indispensable reference and a call for a humane and balanced policy in the future.

✏Among the Chatterati Book Summary : Aby was a normal girl. And then an accident--a fatal one--made a society columnist out of her. But it takes a special kind of person to track the lives of the beautiful, the famous and the merely rich. They are the partying set--extravagant, bitchy, amoral, and always in your face. You mess with them at your own peril. Dazzled and disoriented, Aby follows overrated designers, narcissistic models, aging beauty queens, second-rung politicians and jealous fellow hacks through five-star Delhi. Somewhere along the line, she becomes a stranger to herself--till heartbreak sets her right again. Almost. Among the Chatterati marks the arrival of a spunky, intelligent and tremendously entertaining voice in Indian fiction. '...this is an important book. Society journalism is here to stay and a record of its development was long overdue. Gahlaut has done just that through this obviously personal account. Without any apparent agenda, she has written about the Page Three People (PTP) with tongue firmly in cheek--always remembering to take potshots at herself too.' -- The Indian Express 'Kanika Gahlaut's debut novel, Among the Chatterati...bowled me over with its spontaneous wit, its caustic irony identity, and steps into the realm of faction. Although it is at one level a real page-turner, it also looks deeper and more reflectively at the neuroses and anxieties of the famous and wannabe famous. The desperate narcissism of the partying set makes for topical social comedy.' --Namita Gokhale, The Times of India 'This is a book written breathlessly on the speedkeys, an artful ruse by a ruthless young debut writer who has managed to portray an airhead's passage through parties she was not born into with self-deprecatory sophistication and endearing cynicism...Aby, the hack and main protagonist of Among the Chatterati, is an endearing creature, with her hormones going berserk at the sight of Raghavendra Rathore's (renamed Ramendra Pratap Singh) royal chest hair at one party and chilling out with Feroze Varun in a dusk-filled backgarden in verdant Pilibhit...The action moves with deft speed--hotel rooms of lechy film producers, glitzy dos at megahotels full of inane models and wannabe actresses, exclusive drawing rooms of the self-confessed elite and the Jaipur Polo Ground are all Aby's wonderland.

✏The Mad Scientist Hall of Fame Book Summary : Muwahahahaha! Dr. Frankenstein. Marie Curie. Dr. Moreau. Captain Nemo. They're the most fascinating minds of all time--and now a science guru has teamed up with an expert in human psychology to coax them out of their laboratories and onto the analyst's couch. Real and fictional, famous and infamous, crazy and just crazily driven, these brilliant men and women exhibit a list of neuroses almost as impressive as their extraordinary accomplishments. At last, you can explore their early fixations, their ambitions, their successes and failures, and the particular quirks that have granted each induction into the Mad Scientist Hall of Fame, including: • Dr. Evil: Megalomaniacal doctor with antisocial personality disorder (and pathological dislike of his own son, Scotty) • Nikola Tesla: Real-life mad scientist with obsessive compulsive disorder (and he talked to aliens) • Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde: Brilliant doctor gone bad, suffering from multiple personality disorder (and a penchant for strong chemical cocktails) • Lex Luthor: Villain and supergenius with manic mood disorder (and premature baldness) Witty, illuminating, and thoroughly entertaining, this one-of-a-kind book offers irrefutable proof that success, super-intelligence, and a mantelpiece full of Nobel prizes is no guarantee of sanity. Praise for Daniel H. Wilson "Daniel H. Wilson and Anna C. Long have made an exhaustive study of the evil mind. It is complete, pulls no punches, and reveals secrets that have hitherto remained hidden. It is for these reasons that I must liquidate them. Great book!" --Mike Myers, aka Dr. Evil from Austin Powers "Forget about John Connor--it's Daniel H. Wilson who is going to save us from the Terminators." --Forbes on How to Survive a Robot Uprising "A tribute to the far-fetched ideas that often drive progress." --Erik Sofge, Popular Mechanics, for Where's My Jetpack?

✏Mad Men Book Summary : From the opening credits that feature a silhouette falling among skyscrapers, Mad Men transcended its role as a series about the Madison Avenue advertising industry to become a modern classic. For seven seasons, Mad Men asked viewers to contemplate the 1960s anew, reassessing the tumultuous era’s stance on women’s rights, race, war, politics, and family relationships that comprise the American Dream. Set in the heart of the twentieth century, the show brought to light how deeply we still are connected to that age. The result is a show that continually asks us to rethink our own families, lives, work, and ethical beliefs as we strive for a better world. In Mad Men: A Cultural History, M. Keith Booker and Bob Batchelor offer an engaging analysis of the series, providing in-depth examinations of its many themes and nostalgic portrayals of the years from Camelot to Vietnam and beyond. Highly regarded cultural scholars and critics, Booker and Batchelor examine the show in its entirety, presenting readers with a deep but accessible exploration of the series, as well as look at its larger meanings and implications. This cultural history perspective reveals Mad Men’s critical importance as a TV series, as well as its role as a tool for helping viewers understand how they are shaped by history and culture. As a showcase in America’s new “golden age of television,” Mad Men reveals the deep hold history and nostalgia have on viewers, particularly when combined with stunning visuals and intricate writing and storylines. With this volume as their guide, readers will enjoy contemplating the show’s place among the most lauded popular culture touchstones of the twenty-first century. As it engages with ideas central to the American experience—from the evolution of gender roles to family dynamics and workplace relationships—Mad Men: A Cultural History brings to life the significance of this profound yet entertaining series.

✏Twilight in the Necropolis Book Summary : Step into the One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest of drug rehab for Louisiana physicians and enter hell through the backdoor. Dr. Mary Jane, director of the professional health program, sells out health professionals for cash. She calls the program dough for docs. In league with Dr. Pierce Matthews, the sex and drug relapsing director of the Bayou Addiction Recovery Facility (B.A.R.F.), she railroads professionals into his facility. She is assisted by two medical licensing board members also receiving kickbacks. The atrocious conditions are overlooked because of payoffs at even higher political levels. The scheme is creatively financed by insurance fraud, treatments tainted by conflict of interest, spiked urine screens and overcharging. Besides holding the exclusive contract for all medical professionals, BARF also panders to anyone with a buck or insurance. The only prerequisite for admittance is patient vulnerability so the psychological blackmail can commence. Who are the care providers at this mendacity motel? The facility physician is also Pierce Matthews who took a weekend course in addiction medicine and is now an authority. He feeds his patients antipsychotic meds as frequently as he feeds his own opiate addiction. The head counselor is a homophobic racist Baptist preacher, the Komodo dragon in charge of the emotional feast. The administrator is a cock-of-the-walk redneck fine-tuning the fraud. The black single mother is a cocaine widow tossing the bloody bait into this emotional shark tank. The narcissistic female changes her values as often as her underwear. The patients resist the emotional onion-skinning with humor, despite the facility creed of emotional rape with complete invulnerability. But the grim reaper has his scythe poised. Where will his blade fall? Will he cleave corruption or hone honesty? Will liars be lacerated or the truthful torn apart? The one thing for certain is there will be death.

✏Bohmian Mechanics Book Summary : Bohmian Mechanics was formulated in 1952 by David Bohm as a complete theory of quantum phenomena based on a particle picture. It was promoted some decades later by John S. Bell, who, intrigued by the manifestly nonlocal structure of the theory, was led to his famous Bell's inequalities. Experimental tests of the inequalities verified that nature is indeed nonlocal. Bohmian mechanics has since then prospered as the straightforward completion of quantum mechanics. This book provides a systematic introduction to Bohmian mechanics and to the mathematical abstractions of quantum mechanics, which range from the self-adjointness of the Schrödinger operator to scattering theory. It explains how the quantum formalism emerges when Boltzmann's ideas about statistical mechanics are applied to Bohmian mechanics. The book is self-contained, mathematically rigorous and an ideal starting point for a fundamental approach to quantum mechanics. It will appeal to students and newcomers to the field, as well as to established scientists seeking a clear exposition of the theory.

✏The Jews Among the Nations Book Summary : This is an augmented edition of a superb volume by one of the foremost analysts of European institutions and ideas. Here the late Erich Kahler turns his attention to the special character of the Jewish people, formed uniquely through the interaction of internal and external circumstances in which past and present merge. The chapters in this book deal with persistent problems of Jewish identity. Kahler claims these can be fully understood only by awareness of the close interconnection between the singular ethnic nature and the unique social structure of the Jewish people. He discusses the Jews in Europe, specifically the historical implications of a strict tribal ritual that yet permitted the widest spiritual scope. The second half of the book concerns anti-Semitism, in relation to Jews and Germans. How did the German people, seemingly so congenial to the Jews, develop a murderous revulsion against them, ending a long and fruitful symbiosis? Kahler sees this as a parallel to the parricidal rejection of the Jews by the Christian church. His argument is deepened in an added chapter, new to this volume, on the major forms and features of anti-Judaism, 'in which the earlier theme of the universal and the specific are seen as central not only to the inner history of Judaism but also to the specific interaction of Jews and Gentiles throughout social history.

✏Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer among the Indians Book Summary : o Includes the authoritative texts for eleven pieces written between 1868 and 1902 o Publishes, for the first time, the complete text of "Villagers of 1840-3," Mark Twain's astounding feat of memory o Features a biographical directory and notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri Throughout his career, Mark Twain frequently turned for inspiration to memories of his youth in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. What has come to be known as the Matter of Hannibal inspired two of his most famous books, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and provided the basis for the eleven pieces reprinted here. Most of these selections (eight of them fiction and three of them autobiographical) were never completed, and all were left unpublished. Written between 1868 and 1902, they include a diverse assortment of adventures, satires, and reminiscences in which the characters of his own childhood and of his best-loved fiction, particularly Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, come alive again. The autobiographical recollections culminate in an astounding feat of memory titled "Villagers of 1840-3" in which the author, writing for himself alone at the age of sixty-one, recalls with humor and pathos the characters of some one hundred and fifty people from his childhood. Accompanied by notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri, the selections in this volume offer a revealing view of Mark Twain's varied and repeated attempts to give literary expression to the Matter of Hannibal.

✏Reflections on Human Development Book Summary : This work explores a new development paradigm whose central focus is on human well-being. Increase in income is treated as an essential means, but not as the end of development, and certainly not as the sum of human life. Development policies and strategies are discussed which link economic growth with human lives in various societies. The book also analyzes the evolution of a new Human Development Index which is a far more comprehensive measure of socio-economic progress of nations than the traditional measure of Gross National Product. For the first time, a Political Freedom Index is also presented. The book offers a new vision of human security for the twenty-first century where real security is equated with security of people in their homes, their jobs, their communities, and their environment. The book discusses many concrete proposals in this context, including a global compact to overcome the worst aspects of global poverty within a decade, key reforms in the Bretton Woods institutions of World Bank and IMF, and establishment of a new Economic Security Council within the United Nations.
