✏Amiable Scoundrel Book Summary : From abject poverty to undisputed political boss of Pennsylvania, Lincoln’s secretary of war, senator, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and a founder of the Republican Party, Simon Cameron (1799–1889) was one of the nineteenth century’s most prominent political figures. In his wake, however, he left a series of questionable political and business dealings and, at the age of eighty, even a sex scandal. Far more than a biography of Cameron, Amiable Scoundrel is also a portrait of an era that allowed—indeed, encouraged—a man such as Cameron to seize political control. The political changes of the early nineteenth century enabled him not only to improve his status but also to exert real political authority. The changes caused by the Civil War, in turn, allowed Cameron to consolidate his political authority into a successful, well-oiled political machine. A key figure in designing and implementing the Union’s military strategy during the Civil War’s crucial first year, Cameron played an essential role in pushing Abraham Lincoln to permit the enlistment of African Americans into the U.S. Army, a stance that eventually led to his forced resignation. Yet his legacy has languished, nearly forgotten save for the fact that his name has become shorthand for corruption, even though no evidence has ever been presented to prove that Cameron was corrupt. Amiable Scoundrel puts Cameron’s actions into a larger historical context by demonstrating that many politicians of the time, including Abraham Lincoln, used similar tactics to win elections and advance their careers. This study is the fascinating story of Cameron’s life and an illuminating portrait of his times.

✏Odd Socks Book Summary : Chance events and well-intentioned conspiracies can bring people together in unlikely and sometimes comical liaisons. It is 1970, and diffident young mathematician Andrew Carter has just left the security and prestige of Cambridge to begin a junior lectureship at a university situated in northern England. There he runs into Toby Morton, an old school friend, who invites him to his family's country residence for his half-sister's fifteenth birthday-and to serve as a buffer between Toby and his domineering mother, who wishes Andrew could somehow solve her odd sock problem. Over the weekend, Andrew conspires with Toby and Antonia to rescue their older half-sister from their dominating mother's influence, and Andrew grows close to Antonia. Some thirty years later, Andrew-who is single again-receives a call from Sir Oliver Laine, Member of Parliament and speculative dealer, who arranges for Andrew to commute between an Oxford college and Vietnam as a statistical adviser in medical trials and, incidentally, to help him launch a dubiously effective antidepressant. But after Andrew arrives in Hanoi, he meets a homeless orphan. Suddenly, a chance meeting changes everything for Andrew once again. Odd Socks is the compelling tale of one man's journey through the unforeseen as he weathers tragedies and mishaps with aplomb. iUniverse awarded Odd Socks the 'Editor's Choice' designation. ✏A Preface to Morals Book Summary : After an eloquent and moving analysis of what he sees as the disillusion of themodern age, Lippmann posits as the central dilemma of liberalism its inability to find an appropriate substitute for the older forms of authority-- church, state, class, family, law, custom--that it has denied. Lippmann attempts to find a way out of this chaos through the acceptance of a higher humanism and a way of life inspired by the ideal of -disinterestedness- in all things. In his new introduction to the Transaction edition, John Patrick Diggins marks A Preface to Morals, originally published in 1929, as a critical turning point in Lippmann's intellectual career. He also provides an excellent discussion of the enduring value of this major twentieth-century work by situating it within the context of other intellectual movements.

✏From the Gracchi to Nero Book Summary : From the Gracchi to Nero is an outstanding history of the Roman world from 133 BC to 68 AD. Fifty years since publication it is widely hailed as the classic survey of the period, going through many revised and updated editions until H.H. Scullard’s death. It explores the decline and fall of the Roman Republic and the establishment of the Pax Romana under the early Principate. In superbly clear style, Scullard brings vividly to life the Gracchi’s attempts at reform, the rise and fall of Marius and Sulla, Pompey and Caesar, society and culture in the late Roman Republic, the Augustan Principate, Tiberius and Gaius, Claudius and Nero, and economic and social life in the early Empire.

✏Like a Meteor Blazing Brightly Book Summary : Ulric Dahlgren was a brilliant, ambitious young man who became the youngest full colonel in the United States Army at the age of twenty-one, yet died before his twenty-second birthday. This is the first biography of Dahlgren, and thankfully it was penned by cavalry expert and award-winning author Eric J. Wittenberg. Wittenberg’s account chronicles Dahlgren’s full life story, with a deep look at his military career and extensive connections within the nation’s capital, all of which led to the climax of his life: the notorious Dahlgren Raid. Like a Meteor Burning Brightly: The Short but Controversial Life of Colonel Ulric Dahlgren is based upon a plethora of source material, including previously unknown or little-used archival sources. Anyone interested in the Civil War in general, or just a fascinating life well-told, will want this book on their shelf.
