📒Americanah ✍ InstantRead Summary
✏Americanah Book Summary : Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie | Summary Book Preview: Adichie's Americanah is an enlightening, yet educational epic, based on the lives of Ifemelu and her childhood boyfriend, Obinze. The story spans three countries, America, Nigeria and the UK, while highlighting the issue of race and the oft-romanticized view of the West. It also shines a light on the nature of corruption in Nigeria and how it affects its citizens. Ifemelu's childhood in Nigeria is less about race and more about survival, as well as the limitations experienced by those who live there. Adichie highlights the rampant corruption found throughout Nigerian politics, the military and in the infamous 419 schemes. This corruption, particularly in government, results in the majority of Nigerians competing for honest work, money, electricity, and food, among other things. A few "lucky" Nigerian women are able to circumvent the limitations of their class by becoming a mistress to a high-ranking general or government official. This is the case for Aunty Uju, who, being supported by a man referred to as The General, is able to secure job as a physician and live a lavish lifestyle in Dolphin Estates. 📒A Negritudinal Paradigm ✍ Saada Deni
✏A Negritudinal Paradigm Book Summary : Despite the fact that Americanah is Adichie's most talked-about work, the few articles that have been published on this novel have not addressed many of Americannah's most significant issues. To date, none of the short articles, reviews, and scholarly articles considered how this novel is related to the Negritude movement. Exploring Americanah through postcolonial and Negritude lens, this paper examines the implications of the novel's turning point, the protagonist's decision to return home challenges the West's "Master Narrative" and it's imposed culture that erodes African identities and roots. Drawing on the writings of multiple postcolonial writers, I argue that following a Negritudinal paradigm, Adichie's Americanah rejects the projected black inferiority that has been advanced in Western discourses. The novel therefore urges Africans to re-evaluate African culture through a renewed appreciation and respect for African languages and cultures, and the cultivation of an Afro-centric sensibility.
📒Black Identity In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie S Novel Americanah ✍ Nika Vaupotič
✏Black Identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie s Novel Americanah Book Summary : The thesis analysed the formation of black identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel Americanah (2013). It aimed to uncover whether it is possible to talk about black identity, how it is formed and what influences its formation. It primarily explored how the author presented the formation of black identity in the protagonist of the novel through factors such as race, racism and racial terminology, body image, skin, hair and hair salons. In conducting the analysis of the problem, various critical approaches have been used, such as close reading of the text, formalist and stylistic analyses, review of literature and scholarly articles about the author and black identity, and the biographical method, followed by an evaluation and comprehensive interpretation of the topic in the scope of historical, social and linguistic contexts. Based on the examples presented, it appeared that exposure to various forms of racism, racial discrimination and marginalization, primarily connected to visual appearance, social position, treatment and opportunities (e. g., lighter skin and straighter hair improve one's job prospects), led the protagonist to discover the meaning of being black in America. Thus, the research showed that the formation of black identity is influenced by the environment in which one lives and the social attitudes to which one is exposed.
